She’s the Dutch-Greek star who was poised to take Europe by storm with her upbeat entry “Superg!rl” before the Covid-19 pandemic led to the cancellation of Eurovision 2020.

Now, after emerging from lockdown with a high school diploma and even more confidence than before, Stefania has released “Friday” — the song that finished second in her internal song selection for ESC in Rotterdam.

The song is a mid-tempo celebration of Friday and the rewards that come after a a humdrum week at work. Breezy and laid-back, it’s a summer tune that works with Stefania’s carefree spirit.

Stefania’s music video for “Friday”

The music video was filmed in The Hague at the Collector Hotel. It’s sung from the perspective of a woman who works as a cleaner at the hotel. As she cleans the luxurious rooms, she daydreams of the weekend and the many things she’ll do — from choosing her fabulous outfit to eating whatever she wants to choosing a filter for the perfect selfie. OMG!

Clearly at ease in the hotel, Stefania performs playful choreography in the corner of one room. As she pops and locks and plays with her hair, her outfits magically change one after the other. We’d hate to be the bellboy who has to carry her luggage up the stairs!

Weekends are, of course, best spent with others. Stefania seems to understand that as she frequently uses the collective pronoun “we” as she imagines all the things she and her boyfriend will get up to.

“We’ll make it pop, don’t ever stop, getting all fired up for Friday,” she sings. “No letting go, just let it show, ‘cause I got Friday on my mind.”

Curiously, I was staying in The Collector Hotel the night that Greece officially confirmed Stefania as its Eurovision 2020 singer. If you rewatch the reaction video, you’ll see that I filmed it in one of their suites, which features the same artwork of a Dutch painter above the bed and the same yellow telephone as seen in the music video.

Stefania deserves to enjoy her weekends. Earlier in June, she announced that after Eurovision was cancelled she’d resumed her final year of school.

“After the cancellation of Eurovision I decided to get back to my school work and try to get my diploma after all,” she wrote. “My quarantine days were filled with catching up on various lessons, reading and making tests. But today I can finally say: I MADE IT!! Hard work pays off.”

Stefania’s Eurovision 2021 song

But she hasn’t exactly slowed down. Besides filming her music video for “Friday”, Stefania is already busy preparing for the Eurovision Song Contest 2021. As you’ll recall, Greece was among the first countries to re-confirm their artist in the hours after Eurovision 2020 was cancelled.

According to Z News, composer Dimitris Kontopoulos has already written the song she’ll sing at Eurovision next year. Stefania will reportedly visit Greece to record it.

Friday lyrics — Stefania

The way you look at me
Your eyes are telling me
You’re getting tired of waiting
You got a secret dream
I give you everything
You got my body shaking

We can run, we can hide, making love in the night
But I won’t leave without you
If it’s wrong, if it’s right, I don’t care, gonna fight
Can’t live the dream without you

We’ll make it pop, don’t ever stop
Getting all fired up for Friday
No letting go, just let it show
‘Cause I got Friday on my mind

Keep moving up, get to the top
Getting all fired up for Friday
We’ll make it pop, don’t ever stop
‘Cause I got Friday on my mind

Oh-oh-ooh

You kinda playing tough
But I can’t get enough
You got my full attention
I had a secret dream
I gave you everything
We sailed across the ocean

We can run, we can hide, making love in the night
But I won’t leave without you
If it’s wrong, if it’s right, I don’t care, gonna fight
Can’t live the dream without you

We’ll make it pop, don’t ever stop
Getting all fired up for Friday
No letting go, just let it show
‘Cause I got Friday on my mind

Keep moving up, get to the top
Getting all fired up for Friday
We’ll make it pop, don’t ever stop
‘Cause I got Friday on my mind

Oh-oh-ooh

Imagine when the weekend comes
We’ll play it loud and beat the drums
Take a deep breath and feel the rush
You know it’s just the two of us

Oh-ooh, yeah, yeah

We’ll make it pop, don’t ever stop
Getting all fired up for Friday
No letting go, just let it show
‘Cause I got Friday on my mind

Keep moving up, get to the top
Getting all fired up for Friday
We’ll make it pop, don’t ever stop
‘Cause I got Friday on my mind

It’s a really catchy song. I hope she will release like this in Eurovision 2021. Also, imagine if Stefania comes back to Eurovision in 2025 representing “Cyprus”.

Both this and Supergirl are top 10 material. Lets hope they will be able to find as good as these tracks for 2021

It’s odd that Kontopoulos has a poor track record with his native Greece at ESC – he always seems to be able to write hits for other countries e.g. Ukraine, Russia, Azerbaijan. He now has the time to focus and aim for a top 10 finish for Stefania because Supergirl wasn’t good enough, and neither is this really (albeit marginally better)…

Wasn’t Greece 7th in 2009 with a Kontopoulos song?

I prefer this to supergirl and I don’t understand why they didn’t keep it for 2021?
It’s catchy, fresh, contemporary, original. It shows her voice, it ticks all boxes.
While supergirl was more a “Eurovision song” this is actually a HIT and this is the key for doing well in ESC now days.

Well, they have written a better song for next year! According to the greek journalist and as William says the song is already written by Dimitris and the ARCADE and it reminds a liiiittle bit Friday! Also the song will probably be released in November!

Does “better than Supergirl” means it would win…? They need something even better so why not try with something else.
