Saara Aalto and Baga Chipz Music Video

In bed with the queens! Earlier this September, Eurovision and X Factor UK superstar Saara Aalto teamed up with RuPaul’s Drag Race UK fan favourite Baga Chipz to bring us the hottest collaboration of the year. Now, the girls are getting wild in a Madonna-inspired music video for their track “When The Sun Goes Down.”

The music video premiered on YouTube on Wednesday. Shot on location at the 5-star hotel The Standard in London, it references Madonna’s classic 1991 documentary film, In Bed With Madonna. But this time, it’s In Bed With Baga and Saara! The video, directed by LGBTQ+ filmmaker Samuel Douek, opens with Baga and Saara donned in luxurious silk robes, fighting off paparazzi as they arrive for check-in. In a voiceover, Ms. Aalto recites Madonna’s iconic monologue:

“People think that being a star is about being fabulous. Being in the spotlight, having your picture taken all the time and having everyone worship you. Being rich, rich, rich, and having it all… and you know what? They are absolutely right.”

The video features Baga and Saara sporting some fabulous fashions. The Queen of the North slips into a red tulle gown over lingerie whilst rocking a short bob wig, referencing Madonna’s red Jean-Paul Gaultier kimono that she wore at the 1999 Grammy Awards. Meanwhile, She of the Battered Sausage is seen dancing on the hotel rooftop, working a Kylie Jenner-esque blue wig and and sparkling silver fringe dress.

The video is interspersed with b-roll documentary style footage of Saara and Baga preparing for their video shoot, directly parodying In Bed With Madonna. While Saara puts the finishing touches on her hair and makeup, Ms. Chipz swigs from a hip flask, steals the beauty supplies, and hangs up “live laugh love” posters in her hotel room.

Also appearing in the video is Saara Aalto’s Dancing On Ice partner, Hamish Gaman, who gets frisky with Baga in the hotel room. Aalto and Gaman appeared on the British reality show in 2019, eventually finishing in third place.

Saara Aalto at Eurovision and beyond

Saara Aalto first found fame in 2012 when she finished as runner-up on The Voice of Finland. She gained international attention in 2016, when she appeared as a finalist on The X Factor UK. She is a regular at many UK pride festivals, and she has become an icon in the LGBTQ+ community. In 2018, Aalto represented Finland at the Eurovision Song Contest with “Monsters”, finishing in 25th place. Her dance-pop club track was a favourite with Eurovision fans and charted in several countries across Europe.

Who is Baga Chipz?

Baga Chipz is, of course, one of the UK’s most famous drag queens thanks to her scene-stealing appearance on RuPaul’s Drag Race UK, where she finished in third place. Baga’s no stranger to the microphone, either – in November 2019, she scored her first UK chart hit with “Break Up (Bye Bye)” as part of The Frock Destroyers alongside fellow Drag Race queens Blu Hydrangea and Divina De Campo. In 2019, a petition for The Frock Destroyers to represent the United Kingdom at Eurovision went viral, attracting more than 10,000 signatures.
