He’s one of the biggest breakout stars of the canceled Eurovision Song Contest 2020. And several months later Daði Freyr continues to “Think About Things” — including how to rework an already catchy song while hitting the small screen in Germany.
The Icelandic singer recently performed his Söngvakeppnin 2020 winner and Eurovision favourite on the German talk show Late Night Berlin. But this time he recast it in a notably different style — dark electro!
Performing in Berlin, Daði seems to have drawn on the atmosphere of the city’s underground club scene. His approach is darker, and more electronic, smacking of the bohemian artistic scene around him.
There’s no sign of his band Gagnamagnið, most of whom live in Iceland, and there are none of his trademark fake instruments. Instead, he has two real musicians playing music in real time, enriching the digital song with bass strings and lively percussion. Instead of the band’s signature green hue, they’ve opted for black sweaters, albeit with the iconic pixel faces still present. All of this to say: Whether in Iceland or Germany, whether with his bandmates or not, Daði can still stand proud and slay.
Daði and Eurovision 2021
While Icelandic broadcaster RÚV has confirmed that Iceland will participate in Eurovision 2021, no details have been made public about the country’s long-running national selection.
On his side, Daði has talked about how he is willing to return if internally selected, making it clear that he doesn’t want to go through the Söngvakeppnin national final process again, and would rather focus his work on the main contest. He has explained that he expected to hear from RÚV “in the next few days”.
Daði has also re-scheduled his European tour amid restrictions regarding live venues in different countries owing to the pandemic. However, he has notably left a big time gap in the month of May, meaning he would be available for Eurovision 2021 rehearsals.
