Mirud Festivali i Kenges 59 - Albania Eurovision 2021

He was heavily tipped to do well at Festivali i Këngës 57 in 2018. However, Mirud’s gentle ballad “Nënë” got lost in the mix, remaining in the semi-final. But Mirud is promising something completely different for his FiK 59 comeback — a “Me Tana” style dance song!

Mirud promises a “Me Tana” style dance song for FiK 59

The artist born Durim Morina made the exciting revelation during a Q&A session on his Instagram stories.

When asked whether his 2020 entry — “Nëse vdes” — would be a ballad or pop song, Mirud replied: “It will be a dance song with elements and influences from Albanian music. But definitely the best song I’ve ever done”.

Another follower pondered whether it would be in the style of “Me Tana” — Elvana Gjata’s record-breaking FiK 58 hit which finished second to Arilena Ara’s “Shaj”.

Mirud answers with a simple “Yes!” accompanied by a winking kiss emoji.

The full line-up of lyricists and composers for the 2020 edition of the festival has yet to be published. However, Mirud — who worked with Elhaida Dani on “Nënë” — has confirmed that the new song is written by just himself.

While the dates for the December show have yet to be announced, Mirud is already thinking about the performance. “Everything is ready”, he says regarding his stage outfit. “I’ve worked with some really cool designers who have done amazing things for artists like Lady Gaga and Rosalia”.

Albania at Eurovision 2021

Back in September, Albania confirmed its place at Eurovision 2021.

Head of Delegation Kleart Duraj confirmed that the broadcaster plans to choose its artist via the traditional song festival Festivali i Këngës. But these are strange times — and nobody knows how the Covid-19 pandemic will unfold and what restrictions will be in place when the contest is due to take place.

Kleart said: “Festivali i Këngës will be the national final…in the case the festival can take place, taking into account the restrictions due to the pandemic and its progress.”

Albania’s participation in Eurovision 2021 is certain, even if the circumstances surrounding its annual national selection aren’t. Producers are rightly proceeding as if the show will take place, so all their ducks — and divas — are in a row.

The dates and format for FiK 59 have yet to be confirmed. However, on Wednesday 28 October, RTSH released the names of the 26 competing artists.

As well as Mirud they include FiK favourites like Orgesa Zaimi, Inis Neziri and Era Rusi. Local hitmaker Anxhela Peristeri is also in the mix.

However, there is one notable omission — Arilena Ara, the winner of FiK 58 and Albania’s representative for the cancelled Eurovision 2020 contest.

This means that Albania will have a completely new act for Eurovision 2021.

Albania’s own pop mega-star Elvana Gjata is also absent. It appears that she’s not ready to avenge “Me Tana” just yet.

I totally missed the fact he was going to take part when the contestants were announced. I’m super excited now! I loved nënë and was gutted when he didn’t get into the final.

His last song was so good. If he thinks he can do something completely different but get it up to the same standard, I’m excited for it.
