Malta in Junior Eurovision 2020: Chanel Monseigneur “Chasing Sunsets”

On 1 October, Malta’s Public Broadcasting Services (PBS) organized a national final with twelve competitors — Malta Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2020.  After the songs were presented in a pre-recorded format, the winner was selected from a 50/50 combination of jury votes and online votes from the public. The three-person panel included Malta’s JESC 2019 representative Eliana Gomez Blanco and Eurovision 2019 singer Michela Pace.

Chanel overcame some stiff competition, including Malta’s 2017 representative Gianluca Cilia.

The young singer took her first musical steps aged just three when she started singing and music lessons. She entered various local competitions, notably winning the ‘Best Singer of The Year’ award in December 2019.

She’s also found success abroad, participating in Lithuania’s Music Talent League, Italy’s Talent World Contest and Latvia’s Riga Symphony. She won her category in all three events.

What do the “Chasing Sunsets” lyrics mean?

The lyrics to “Chasing Sunsets” appear to reflect the importance of taking time to savour even the simplest moments of life — something everyone can appreciate in these tough COVID-affected times.

The song starts with a mood of inner reflection, as Chanel sings about looking out over a beautiful sunrise, appreciating the scenery around her.  She sees the calming scene of birds flying over the sea, and hears their call. They almost becoming one with the ebb of the waves. As she continues through the chorus, it’s almost as if she dreams of becoming one of the birds in flight.

As Chanel sings “It’s what their life is all about..”, it seems she appreciates the simple life that the birds have, just being able to glide effortlessly in the sky. Chanel’s vocals go from moments of power to moments of softness, almost echoing the ever-changing flight of the birds that are so evident in the imagery of the song (and reflect flashes of influence from Demi Lovato, Sia and Kelly Clarkson, whom she counts among her idols).

Asked by Junioreurovision.tv what her favourite lyrics are in the song, Chanel answered: “Chasing sunsets here and far, as they follow the southern star, and they travel the world breathin’ out, it’s what their life is all about, what their life is all about.” She explains: “It gives a message of hope, to chase your dreams no matter how far and impossible they seem, and this is what life is all about – chasing one’s dreams”.

The animation included in the official cartoon video will form part of Chanel’s final staging.

“Chasing Sunsets” lyrics — Chanel Monseigneur (Malta JESC 2020)

Written and composed by: Peter Borg, Aleandro Spiteri Monseigneur, Joe Roscoe and Emil Calleja Bayliss

Bayliss co-wrote Malta’s Junior Eurovision 2019 entry “Marchin’ On”. Spiteri Monseigneur is keeping it in the family, as he’s Chanel’s cousin!

English Text

As the sun was risin’
I looked out over the horizon
Over the horizon
There were birds roamin’ free
Flyin’ over the deep blue sea
The deep blue sea
And I could hear echoes
So gentle that their sweetness flows
Flows down the steady stream

Chasing sunsets here and far
As they follow the southern star
And they travel the world breathin’ out
It’s what their life is all about
It’s what their life is all about

As the sеasons slowly change
They glide down on thе mountain range
And far, far from other crowds
You see them pass through the gathering clouds
You see them flow down the steady stream, yeah

Chasing sunsets here and far
As they follow the southern star
And they travel the world breathin’ out
It’s what their life is all about
It’s what their life is all about

Red and orange will blend
As the day comes to an end
It feels like an illusion

Chasing sunsets here and far
As they follow the southern star
And they travel the world breathin’ out
It’s what their life is all about
What their life is all about

Marchin on was Malta’s 2018 entry, not 2019.

I guess BV stands for backing vocals, correct me if I’m wrong. Since the contest started, they have been allowed pre-recorded backing vocals, and I think the the backing vocalists in the pre recorded vocals can be from any age. (Which is why I didn’t really understand the rage with it in Adult ESC)

My god, why are you so pressed about so-called adult lyrics?? I don’t want to reveal my age but I am actually quite young since I am a teenager. Do I seem so dumb to you that I cannot formulate proper sentences? If I can, then so can these kids when writing and/or singing song lyrics. I just don’t get why you think children cannot speak on issues with a single ounce of gravitas, and can only talk about having friends and being happy. It makes no sense to me, and all you are doing here is putting down these… Read more »
