Dotter and The Mamas face off

In 2020, Sweden’s Melodifestivalen delivered one of most dramatic finishes we’ve seen in any Eurovision national final. The figures at the centre of the nail-biting finale were the winners The Mamas and Dotter, who came second by a single point. Now, Aftonbladet reports that both acts will return for the 2021 edition.

The Mamas for Melodifestivalen 2021

Many things have changed since the Melodifestivalen final in March. The Mamas’ victory in the Swedish national final turned bittersweet with the cancellation of Eurovision 2020. Then reports said The Mamas would only go to Rotterdam 2021 if SVT selected them internally.

However, according to Aftonbladet, after receiving several different song proposals over the summer, the trio of Ashley Haynes, Loulou Lamotte and Dinah Yonas Manna have decided to perform on the Melfest stage for a third year running.

They have, of course, won the song contest twice in a row now. In 2019 they were victorious alongside John Lundvik. In 2020 they took first place unaccompanied.

Dotter for Melodifestivalen 2021

Meanwhile, Johanna Jansson (aka Dotter) built her career further in the months following her dramatic second-place finish. After releasing “Backfire”, “I’m Sorry”, and most recently “Vintern jag var sexton”, she’s now ready for her Melodifestivalen return. Aftonbladet’s sources say her song is one to shoot for the highest spots.

Melodifestivalen 2021: Expected acts

According to Aftonbladet, we already know six of the 28 acts for Melodifestivalen 2021. They are Tusse Chiza, Sannex, Sami Rekik & Wahl, Julia Alfrida (P4 Nästa), The Mamas and Dotter.

The Melfest rules forbid artists from revealing whether or not they’re participating. Therefore, Aftonbladet’s reports are not official. However, their rumours have proven accurate before, as they correctly predicted 45 of the last two years’ 56 participants.

Will The Mamas complete their trifecta? Will Sweden bring us to Dotterdam? Did 2020 just get a whole lot better? Let us know in the comments below!

Hope the mama’s get their second chance and that they deserve it. I’m glad that they aren’t discouraged because of what happened in 2020

If I was Dotter I’d not participate this year if The Mamas are, they’ll probably get sympathy votes in addition to their large genuine support. If she came in 2022 when she could compete and The Mamas couldn’t she could make a bigger impression.

ok I’m so happy that these (I think there are more than one) songs sound similar to solovey, exactly what I wanted from them – happy they didn’t go for mainstream music as I feared when I heard that they were working together with song-writers of friend of a friend..

Not the Mamas again! I’m fed up with sending gospel. But I fear they’ll gather sympathy votes and that other artists and songs will stand in their shade. The swedish people like to vote with their hearts. But really.. enough is enough.

I hope we don’t play the sympathy card and vote for the Mamas to win. Because as good as they were I don’t want us to send gospel again for the third time. Has gospel become the new schlager where we send varieties of the same song? Like we did all those years after Charlotte won in 1999?

Well, apparently us Swedes did vote for it since gospel won 2019 and 2020. In 2019 it even won with a big lead. I don’t know anybody who dind’t have John Lundvik as a favourite in 2019.

Probably not but Anna Bergendahl got most votes simply by sympathy

I recently heard “Move” for the first time. I knew exactly what to expect and I was not let down! I don’t think appearance # 3 would be a good idea – and risk a possible repeat of 2010. And to think all the alleged “Fuego” copiers are given such a hard time!

The Mamas could make a bit of Melfest history that’s never likely to be matched if they could go on and win again…
Good for Dotter on coming back, even though it means we’ll have to put up with her fans on here for the next few months. 😉

Family Four won twice in a row, back in the 1970s.

I wouldn’t call them the actual winners in 2019, they were just backing singers to John.

Mine is more mundane but makes sense in context: Johanna’s Daughters (since Dotter is Swedish for Dotter, aka Johanna Janson)

I remember The Mamas in an interview saying that they probably wouldn’t come back for the next Melfest unless they had the right song, so I’m excited to see what they’ve bought this time. As for Dotter……..need I say more? Bulletproof really grew on me so I’m wondering if she’s able to top that!

If we get songs as good as “Move” and “Bulletproof” + “DNA” by Loreen (if it is a good song), omg.?

I imagine The Mamas will get a lot of sympathy votes given what happened this year. I’m glad Dotter is going to return and I would love to see her represent Sweden at Eurovision with a song as good as or even better than Bulletproof! #Dotterdam2021

I loved the Mamas, but I really don’t wanna see Sweden sending a gospel song 3 times in a row, with the same singers actually. Dotter however – I am excited for that. and also I hope they won’t get pity votes (and something tells me that Sweden isn’t like that – but can any Swede expand on that, do Swedes give pity points or not) 🙂

I agree with you actually, I’m pretty sure the mamas won’t be getting “pity” votes regardless of the song which probably won’t be the case with, say Uku and Estonia.

Erasmus

tbh I’m not sure Uku will be getting a lot of pity votes.. and even if he wins the televote he probably won’t win the jury – especially if there are a few of great acts this year.

Winning the jury was never an issue for EL. Not falling out of the top 3 in the combined vote is. Kerli won the jury in 2017, Stefan in 2019 and Anett & Ferdi in 2020. None of them won it all. I have a hunch Uku will probably win, unless there is a song Estonians genuinely prefer more.

true.. but again it may happen that Uku will not even be in the top 5 of the jury, u never know.. depends on a lot of things

Uku was 6th in jury last year. And Victor was second last in 2019. Winning totally depends on the public vote in eesti laul.

Sure, it absolutely does and that’s what makes it unpredictable. But considering that Uku’s popularity already have him a huge boost in 2020, thinking that voters will back him up with even greater passion has some merit. Of course, ultimately it can go either way. The deciding factor might also be the song. However, Estonians have shown their support to a song some fans might call dated. So, their subsequent taste might also diverge from your average Eurofan watcher.

EL has such a good voting system. You have to have an element of jury support to make it to the superfinal but from there, the public’s favourite goes onto win. More countries can learn from this.

I agree. Even in cases in which I vastly prefer jury’s favorite to the public’s, I find it an easier pill to swallow. At least there’s a large number of people who gave their support to the song. I’d rather have situations like France 2019 or Estonia 2020 than like Spain 2017. Sure, I always root for my favorite, but I find ”losing” much easier when it’s a huge pool of people deciding.

nah. I mean I’d prefer if Kerli and Jaagup won and not Uku and Koit&Laura. i mean the system sounds good, but in practice it’s not great..

Why would the contestant get more pity votes in Estonia than in Sweden?

Azaad

Maybe because the Swedes are more ruthless and want the most competitive song to win? The Mamas were the best vocalists of the night even though I thought overall Dotter was better

I wanted so bad Dotter and Khayat for ESC2020, but they both came second…

I will be so happy if one of my fav babes from last season can reach Rotterdam arena after all, I’llpray for an amazing song for Dotter so she could win Melfest! yay))))
