Blas Cantó is due to represent Spain at Eurovision 2021 — and now it appears he’s making progress with selecting his song for Rotterdam. Spanish language site Eurovision Spain is reporting that Blas has shortlisted four songs and presented them to broadcaster RTVE and his record label Warner Music.
The four songs cover a variety of genres, but Eurovision Spain notes that they are still all sticking with styles of music that Blas has become known for in his solo career.
The Spanish Eurovision website also notes that Duncan Laurence is not among the songwriters behind the four songs. In June, Blas revealed that he had been involved in a songwriting session with the Eurovision 2019 winner, leading to speculation that Duncan could be composing Blas’ song for Rotterdam.
Blas’ 2021 song “Universo” was written by Blas himself, along with a selection of songwriters from Spain and abroad.
How will Blas’ song for Eurovision 2021 be selected?
While Blas’ four songs are now off being assessed by the Spanish broadcaster and his record label, it’s still unknown how his song for Rotterdam will be chosen. And there’s no word on whether the public will get to hear the four.
His song for Eurovision 2020 was selected internally, however a shortlist of four songs suggests RTVE could hold some sort of national final. to select the song.
This would be similar to the national final held in 2012, where Pastora Soler performed three songs. The format was repeated the following year when El Sueño de Morfeo again presented three songs.
Earlier in the month, RTVE director Toñi Prieto and Spanish Head of Delegation Ana María Bordas chatted to Eurovision Spain about the differences between Spain at Eurovision and Junior Eurovision. The experts said, “It is true that, with established artists, is harder to find a consensus over the ideal song to represent Spain”,
They also said that everyone involved — artist, record label, manager and broadcaster — needs to be content with the final song.
What do you think? What sort of song would you like Blas to bring to Rotterdam in 2021? Should he move in a different direction to “Universo”? Let us know in the comments below!
This could be good. One to watch out for.
I really hope that the songs are great because Blas has some very nice songs that would do very well in ESC, so it will be dissapointing if the end up being like “Universo”
I think that Blas Canto is a great artist and can really impress us in Rotterdam. Personally, I’m hoping for something like ‘El no soy yo’.
Just was going to write the same thing! El no soy yo is amazing! I really hope Blas won’t mess up another chance this time and show all his potential in 2021. Spain is my 2d favourite country in ESC but to be honest, “Universo” was a bit underwhelming for what I was used for from them.
I’m praying that Spain and UK send something top 10 worthy. I have faith in Blas, and I’m sure there is one really good song among these songs. I hope they are modern and fresh.
