C’est incroyable! Forty-three years after France last won Eurovision with Marie Myriam, the country is enjoying its first win at the Junior Eurovision Song Contest. Valentina — a ray of sunshine who turned the stage into a giant rainbow, illuminated by a playful LED and her infectious smile  — carried a positive message that our imagination can save us even in the darkest of times.

And on Monday morning France’s Head of Delegation Alexandra Redde-Amiel was still overcome by it all as she sat down to speak with French journalist Fabien Randanne for 20minutes.fr.

In the wide-ranging interview, she discussed the eight-month process to get to the win, and made it clear thta Valentina kept the team going through all the uncertainty of recent months. “Valentina — the little sunshine that she is — carried us through this with a pride that she had to represent France,” Alexandra said. “She motivated us, energized us and made us want to fight….Valentina has always been there to say, ‘I’m up for it!’ It’s a beautiful example of winning — to say that nothing is impossible.”

France wants to host Junior Eurovision 2021

Unlike the adult Eurovision, where winning brings the responsibility to host, things are less certain with Junior Eurovision. Italy won Junior Eurovision 2014, but it declined hosting duties — instead, Bulgaria hosted the following year. And Russia won Junior Eurovision in 2017, but Belarus hosted in 2018. Does France want to stage next year’s show, now that it’s won for the first time in its four attempts?

“We are, of course, very keen to host Junior Eurovision in France next year,” Alexandra said, noting that she has support from both the president of the broadcaster and its TV director.

“We will first enjoy the moment and then discuss the possibility with the presidency of Eurovision and the EBU to find out how we can organize the 2021 edition and if it will be possible to do so. You have to speak with them before formalizing anything. But in any case, the wish is there.”

French HoD says that Valentina did NOT sing playback

The pandemic forced producers of Junior Eurovision 2020 to think creatively, resulting in a show that, for the first time, had artists record live performances in home studios. Naturally that’s led to speculation and intrigue online with some users accusing the French team of using playback. 20minutes.fr highlights comments from some Spanish fans in particular, who claimed Valentina’s win wasn’t deserved because of the allegations.

Previously, Valentina, through her official Twitter account, dismissed these allegations.

And on Monday Alexandre was more forceful, explaining that everyone followed the same set of rules. She said:

“Two things. The first: in each competition, there are dissatisfied people who do not want to believe [the result]…The second is that we had guidelines — that is to say a very clear charter saying what to do. Things were not different because we recorded our performance in each of our countries. We were all treated the same way with these documents indicating the number of cameras, the shape of the stage, the shape of the screens, when the performance was to be performed, how many times we could redo the song…Everything was live. Everything has been verified in Poland. Valentina sings live, there is no debate, and she has an absolutely gorgeous voice.”

EBU denies playback allegations to Spain’s RTVE

Over in Spain, RTVE’s Eurovision director has spoken out on the matter. At a press conference concerning their participant Solea, Toñi Prieto said: “Well, we were confused at what was going on both on social media and in the newspapers. So we formally asked the EBU about it. They explicitly told us, the delegations, that all countries were subject to the same controls and that the playback allegations were not true. No playback was used in any performance. The EBU is a big instrument, so Spain won’t push them with this issue. We have to believe what they are telling us.”

“We have followed all EBU guidelines, concerning stage, green rooms, performance… Perhaps some countries differed. If so, the EBU should be transparent about this.”

“That is why we prefer in-place Eurovision rather than one that’s pre-recorded. The same conditions apply when Eurovision is done in-place, and that is how should be.”

Rather pointedly, the Spanish entertainment boss suggested that France’s jury may have deliberately downgraded Soleá, who was considered one of Valentina’s chief rivals. She told reporters: “In my opinion, you won’t give points to your enemies.”

Are you excited that France wants to host Junior Eurovision in 2021? Do you think it’ll go to Paris? Or are we more likely to visit Lyon, Grenoble, Lille, Dijon or Aix-en-Provence? Let us know in the comments box below!

Hey Wiwibloggs – This would be REALLY easy to check. You don’t have to take anybody else’s word for it. Here’s what actual journalists would do (or at least have someone else do). If they were really interested in getting at the truth: (1) Load up both the studio version and the live version in some audio software. (2) Sync ’em up. (3) See and hear for yourselves if the vocals are 100% identical or nah. (4) Report your findings to your readers. But of course that would require you to be more interested in reporting the truth, instead of… Read more »

I agree with you. But you do not need to do that anymore, as it has been done arlready and confirmed that the two audio tapes are 100% similar. In my opinion, there is another possibility: that the live version was streamlined with original sound, and even originally uploaded to/kept on youtube with the original sound, for a while, and then later the audio got replaced with the studio (commercial) version because of minor errors when she sang live (like for example lots of breathing due to continuous choregraphy)… Even in the comments of the youtube videos, some people ask… Read more »

I’m wondering… am I a genius or what? I don’t need these tools, when I listen to a song I just memorize every nuance of it. I thought everyone does that, but I just learned that it’s not the case. For people like me, with musical memory, this entire scandal is a sh**show, because we know it was playback and no statements and tweets can change that. For all of you who can’t memorize sounds – do what mawnck says. I hope that will convince you.

Michu…No need to wonder you are a genius 😉 . The question is not anymore if the audio is the same. It IS the same. It has been confirmed by technics freaks and other geniuses like you. The question for which I would like to have an answer is more when this studio audio was put on the pictures (that we can see today) of the sunday performance. Was ist added by France production, before submitting to EBU? Replaced by EBU before broadcasting on sunday? Through EBU after broadcasting after uploading to Youtube? Still no answer…Again, has anybody recorded the… Read more »

I’m against the hate that Valentina is getting, but I’m also against the hate that the spanish fans are getting. Yes, there are some that are toxic but I see more comments that hate on Solea and Spain because of the toxic fans. Stop being toxic because others are being toxic, you’re only making it worse. And most of the spanish fans commenting on here are being respectful and are being clear that they are not against Valentina, they are against the use of playback. Also it is not just the spanish fans complaining. And before anyone says I’m biased,… Read more »

Spanish fans are too offensive, but they are right. Last year Poland made Viki win by a huge margin (she potentially could win without this support anyway though), and this year France didn’t play fair. Jury voted upside down on purpose and they used playback. I think they only don’t get strong hate for that because it was a kid competition. It’s a very serious violation of international contest’s rules.

You’re right, I agreed with them both years, although some of the comments were far too extreme. I’m trying to say that most of the comments I see here that are arguing they used playback are doing so respectfully, without making any comments against Valentina or the French fans (who are being just as toxic as the Spanish fans at this point) because it’s the fault of the EBU or the French delegation. People can argue that France didn’t use playback without attacking the other side as well, but that doesn’t seem to be happening. Although obviously this is the… Read more »

I always try to keep the side of whomever I agree with, tone aside. I’ve told it here already, but what I believe is that it’s French delegation’s violation and EBU just allowed that to happen. It shocks me that nobody controlled the process of recording, I was hoping for it to be much better organized. I don’t believe in the stories that EBU decided to put playback over Valentina’s recording. To me it looks like Valentina knew she’s doing a full lip-sync and focuses only on the body language. I really don’t think the delegations of France, Belarus and Russia would have risked sending a playback version to the EBU. There were rules: just imagine being disqualified because of not respecting one. There was too much at stake. To me the problem (because there is one) comes from the EBU. Have they done a mistake in mixing the tracks? Consciously or not? Because they were the ones charged to add the vocal track to the instrumental etc, it has been confirmed. So what happened? We should not blame the delegations.

The question is, who’s to blame? If these “live” versions were greenlit by the EBU technical staff, it means there can’t be any penalties for the national delegations.

She still would’ve won the contest regardless of the playback, especially hearing her sing it live here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8DxGaD3xZts, cause she sings beautifully. So it doesn’t really matter but it’s still unfortunate her delegation decided to put the studio track on it or used autotune cause this clip really shows she doesn’t need it.. Whatever, well deserved and congratulations Valentina! People should realize she is just a kid and Russia and Belarus did just the same so it wasn’t like only 1 country is at fault, it’s a bigger issue.

Aaaaand it’s gone again. A blatant violation of fair use rights. The EBU really doesn’t want you to see that video. Because if at least three countries can get away with it at Junior, they can get away with it in May as well! Frankly, given what we know now, and the EBU’s refusal to do anything about it, anybody who DOESN’T use playback at Eurovision 2021 is crazy. I don’t know if someone has pointed it out, probably someone did, but at some point during Valentina’s performance you hear her voice without her singing, not even with the mic in her mouth. Pre-recorded backvocals were allowed I think, but those didn’t sound as backvocals if you ask me. Also, they wouldn’t even recognized the playback thing if it was true. First, no one should be cruel to any child. Second, no one should be mean to any competitor for something that may or may not have been done by the adults around them! Third, the EBU should explain the steps it takes to check these playback issues — then people will be less suspicious I think. Let there be PEACE please!!

The problem is having as a recording backing vocals the singer’s voice. Then you really don’t know if it’s real live singing or lip sync. It’s the same in Melodifestivalen. They should have other voices as backing vocals and the singer’s voice should be only live, otherwise there will always be controvery imo.

That Valentina kid looks absolutely adorable and I think compared to the other contestants, she’s a worthy winner. But let’s not put our head in the sand here: saying there was no playback this year is like saying Poland or Turkey do not get diaspora votes from the televoting. It’s like saying that Romania/Moldova, Russia/Belarus, Sweden/Norway or Greece/Cyprus do not exchange 12 points every year. It’s a waste of energy trying to deny something so obvious that everybody already knows it. There was a huge hype for Viki in Poland. Is it fair? Probably not. Is that evil? Nope. I’m sure there was a huge hype for Valentina in France this year, or even voting bots. The difference was just too much between her and the second televoting place.

We only have to hope that the pre recorded background vocal will not be louder as the singer. But since Martin is from Sweden I have no doubts that we will have performances like “Vem e som os” and “Norsken” with almost no live in chorus next years in Eurovision aswell, sad 🙁

Furthermore, I actually like the Swedish influecence in Eurovision and I do respect Martin and Christer, they did a good job almost always. But sometimes (not always!)the pre recorded backing vocals are too loud and you dont hear live voices (Everyday, Vamos Amigos in chorus).

sorry. yeah but for example Mendez who dont sound good live. He should be very happy he have help in the chorus. I like live song ofc the most but it gives songs more power in Melfest with allowed chorus sound. But in ESC i dont want it. Its not 100% good either. Sweden in 2009 and 2018 did not sound super great in ESC. Malena could not have 100 voices there on stage

But there were no background vocals in the verses part and she still sounds identical to the studio version. I have no doubts they just played a studio version during her performance. The real question is: why?

I know I am gonna ve downvoted, but I think Germany had the weakest package in the competition. However Susan put her soul in what other people wrote for her and no way she deserved ro be under The Playback Trinity. Petar had not the strongest song, but he is so sweet and chsrismatic, loved the performance, even if I was not a fan of that stage. Oleksander was amazing live, the song was even more niche with the key changes and the stage did justice to the song. I was disappointed he was only 7th with the juries because… Read more »

Precisely! I get that the prerecorded aspect makes people naturally suspicious, but some people just sing well. I’d bet anything that if 2018 was done the same way, we would be speculating about Elina Nechayeva too.

I have no doubts about that that Valentina sang alive.

I also have no doubts about that that the French Broadcaster played the studio version over her live vocals.

EXACTLY! I actually compared both the tracks (yes, I am extremely bored) – they are IDENTICAL. Seriously it is ridiculous to deny that this is playback. You can see in the middle of the song, Valentina stops singing but her voice keeps on playing.

I don’t think the blame and the anger should be aimed at Valentina. But I think that something needs to be done.

Agree with you. She sang live when recording. Possibly it was even broadcasted live with that original live version (did not see it). And then some silly producers decided it was better to replace the audio with the studio version. crazy. Some people even noticed that, and wrote it under the official EBU video of the winner. Complete nonsense action to replace the audio.

Look at rehearsals work, 11 first seconds especially convincing, voice is much to loud compared to accompagnement, she did sing live

You are wrong, we are insinuating that EBU didn’t do the right thing, allowing this inappropriate procedure of France, Belarus and Russia’s performances. I do think the girl can sing really really well and maybe she should have won as well singing live but, before settling prejudices against spanish people you should try to listen the official video at the same time than her ‘live’ performance’. It’s identical 100%. And do the same thing with for example Georgia or Malta where you can listen to the differences, but not even a single little difference with Valentina performance, not even a… Read more »

This is why I want a live event in one place for the adult Eurovision. Some countries will overuse their pre-recorded vocals or will use a non-live take of the act. I want to see artists live on real time with nerves. That’s what makes it exciting.

I feel bad for her because she probably did sing live, but some technical mistake happened that they did have to put some form of playback on the live 100%!

I have another theory. I think she doesn’t sing live in this clip (because her lips match the studio version perfectly), but I can’t accuse a child of lying, so I suppose they had another clip recorded, which for some reason hasn’t been used. Arina from Belarus also didn’t sing live in the clip they’ve sent, because she’s too nonchalant about the distance from the microphone. It looks like a staging test video.

Toñi Prieto, she’s not the HoD, she’s TVE’s Head of Entertainment. She’s clueless about most things ESC-related. You can tell she’s not very keen on ESC and JESC in general. I wouldn’t read too much on anything she says.

Spanish HoD since 2017 is Ana María Bordás, who is more professional and is at least trying things despite her bosses’ antics. She pushed for Spain returning to JESC.

No need to apologize 😉 Toñi Prieto the Head of Entertainment is the one who spoke today at a press conference. Don’t think she has a real interest on disputing France’s victory, she’s not interested in Spain winning, having to host is most probably a nightmare scenario for her (because of the extra work). They asked EBU about the playback allegation because she knew she would get questions (mostly people running sites who want clickbait for fans) at the press conference, and she only wants to save fave, because she usually gets questioned about TVE’s poor decisions on staging and… Read more »

My view on the subject: 1) Valentina can sing live and there’s no doubt – she’s no stranger to singing and performing and any decision about playback was probably done by the adults, so leave her alone… Plus, she won both jury votes and online voting so yea, she’s a definite winner 2) They would never confirm whether they used playback or not, so there’s no use in trying… 3) The French jury vote was definitely suspicious… They gave their most points to the weaker entries and put Spain in their last place, that’s super fishy 4) I wish France… Read more »

In any case, the majority of viewing numbers were incredible, from what’s been released. Poland’s continued dedication to the contest has paid off, as they got the largest viewing numbers for a single audience in the history of the contest (an average of 6 MILLION viewers!). Strong numbers in Spain, France, the Netherlands, and (the happiest news for me) Germany as well. People wanted some Eurovision, and by golly, they tuned in!

The number in Spain is not considered strong by any means, it lost almost a third of the viewers from 2019, and the 2019 number was already not satisfying for RTVE. The 2020 Contest got 272k less viewers than the cheap German TV movie that aired just before, the kind of content that airs on La 1 on that timeslot. France’s number is similarly poor, in that timeslot France 2 got less viewers than TF1, France 3 (their sister channel) and M6, despite winning. Won’t comment on Dutch and German numbers since JESC aired on kids channels instead of the… Read more »

Bluper (El Español): “‘Eurovisión Junior’ se hunde en TVE al perder 400.000 espectadores” (Eurovision Junior plummets on TVE as it loses 400k viewers)

Satisfying or not, apparently they’re still set to compete in 2021. Still getting those results, and there’s at least some potential for building an audience. France is still readjusting to Junior Eurovision. The recognition for their entries usually comes in the aftermath of the contest (like how “Bim Bam Toi” became a TikTok hit a couple months after the contest). And exactly! The numbers are gonna be skewed cuz they’re kid-oriented programs on non-kid-oriented channels in bigger countries (and even then, look at Poland: they’re not a small country and their numbers are bonkers). France’s victory in JESC yesterday shows that they can do it. They just need to be bold & believe in themselves and of course the artist, as well as picking the right combo of song and artist.
