In recent years, San Marino has become notorious for submitting foreign artists to Eurovision. However, on December 11, the tiny Southern European nation reminded us that they have their own lively music scene.
The three Sammarinese artists who represented the microstate in Eurovision — Miodio (2008), Valentina Monetta (2012, 2013, 2014, 2017), and Anita Simoncini (2015) — have released a Christmassy new single titled “Sogno” (Dream) in conjunction with 11 other local artists.
San Marino United Artists release “Sogno”
On Friday, the new (and probably only) Sammarinese supergroup released “Sogno”. The writer and composer of the song, whose voice we hear in the first lines, is Nicola Della Valle, frontman of Miodio. The Eurovision 2008 singer also presented San Marino’s points in 2011.
Two other Eurovision alumni, Anita Simoncini and four-time participant Valentina Monetta, also take part. Irol MC, who gave San Marino’s points in 2016 and competed in the 2018 selection, has his own rap verse.
The rationale behind San Marino United Artists was to unite fourteen unique voices and musical styles. This is also labelled as the first joining of forces for the country’s music industry.
The other names involved, which you might not be familiar with (yet), are ELU (Luca Partisani, Elisa Mafry Massari), Sara Jane Ghiotti, Monica Hill, Roberto Moghe Moretti, Piermatteo Carattoni, Alessandra Busignani, Francesco Zao Zazzi, Paolo Beccari, and Fabrizio Pregnolato.
In the music video a young girl, Veronica, wakes up to the sight of a dot of light, which she starts following. The sights of the beautiful microstate draw her in, and we get a view of the Italian-speaking nation.
“Sogno” lyrics
Dream – English translation
You know there is a night in which Believe in this fairytale, everything will change, You know you just need to believe Believe in this fairytale, everything will change, And you will fall in love with this sky that cradles you slowly in its arms Close your eyes and think, even the moon tonight is different Once upon a time But let yourself be surprised like when as a child Believe in this fairytale, everything will change, |
very nice song <3
Nice song !! I like it !!
Christmas song without Christmas, just like Roxen and Rybak song too.
Also, a couple of them were on the local shortlist for 2018, and I believe at least two have been on their Eurovision jury multiple times.
Actually, surprisingly enough, besides IROL, the only other one I see on the hurt pages is Sara Ghiotti – chair of the jury in 2014, her final scoreboard had Sweden first and Iceland second (left-field but I approve), she put Austria fifth (IROL had them 22nd, yeesh), and her least favorite was Poland.
*jury pages
IROL might have some potential for ESC, but maybe as a featuring artist for someone, maybe Anita Simoncini, i mean she deserves a proper chance after that mess in 2015
or Jimmie Wilson, whom also deserves another go but then as main star
I’m so excited to listen to this AND finally have a somewhat comprehensive resource about San Marino’s actual for-real music scene. Look at that supergroup! Traveling Wilburys could NEVER!
(That being said, Serhat’s gotta at least have honorary citizenship or something at this point.)
