We’ve had over three weeks to familiarise ourselves with the 26 finalists of Italy’s Sanremo 2021.
So while we count down to the days until the iconic festival kicks off on 2 March, we want to know which of the artists you are most excited for. Yes, the songs are yet to be released but that hasn’t stopped us from checking out the vast back catalogues of all the competitors.
Who are you most excited for?
Sanremo 2021: Notable names
There are two names that will be instantly recognisably to international Eurovision fans — Ermal Meta and Francesca Michielin. Meta returns to the Festival three years after winning with fellow singer Fabrizio Moro. They finished fifth at Eurovision 2018 with “Non mi avete fatto niente”.
Meanwhile, Eurovision 2016 singer Francesca is participating in Sanremo for the second time. She’s collaborating with festival debutant Fedez. They’ve previously joined forces for “Cigno nero” and “Magnifico”.
Ermal and Francesca are the only two Eurovision names, but the list of Sanremo returnees is much longer. Annalisa, Arisa, Francesco Renga, Ghemon, Irama, Lo Stato Sociale, Malika Ayane, Max Gazzè (with Trifluoperazina Monstery Band), Noemi and Orietta Berti are all back after varying amounts of time away — Berti last graced the Ariston stage 29 years ago.
There’s also space on the card for Bugo. He sensationally walked off during the fourth night in 2020 after his singing partner Morgan changed the lyrics to their entry live on stage. The pair were disqualified.
Fasma graduates to the main show having competed in the 2020 newcomers’ category. The remaining 2021 candidates are Aiello, Colapesce & Dimartino, Coma_Cose, Extraliscio feat. Davide Toffolo, Fulminacci, Gaia, Gio Evan, La Rappresentante di Lista, Madame, Måneskin, Random and Willie Peyote.
