The Roop Discoteque Pabandom is Naujo 2021 entry

Ahead of its live debut on Saturday 23 January, Lithuanian band The Roop have released the studio version of “Discoteque”, their Pabandom iš Naujo! 2021 entry. The music video will arrive a little later, at 08:30 CET on Friday morning.

Viewers will get to see the performance for the first time during Heat Two of Lithuania’s Eurovision 2021 selection show. However, The Roop will merely be showcasing “Discoteque” as they are already guaranteed a spot in the grand final.

The Roop — “Discoteque” (Pabandom iš Naujo! 2021)

As you can hear, “Discoteque” is slightly different from their Eurovision 2020 entry “On Fire”. On Instagram, the three-piece confirmed that this was very much their intention.

The new song “Discoteque” is not a copy of “On Fire”. That’s what we wanted the least. However, one thing that is in common (apart from band members) is that both sound somewhat unusual. And we love it!

Last year, “unusual” did well. They secured a record-breaking victory in the Lithuanian selection. Winning with over 50,000 SMS votes, The Roop received more votes than any other act that in all the years of Lithuania’s Eurovision national finals.

Nevertheless, the promotional pictures on LRT’s website suggest that their performance is going to be just as energetic as last year. Earlier this month, The Roop shared that dancers Migle and Marijanas, who danced with the group in 2020, will once again join them for “Discoteque”.

“On Fire” quickly became a smash. It was one of the first instances in which a Lithuanian Eurovision song was a favourite among fans and bookmakers. In May of 2020, the group won Eurovision Song Contest – the German final, the alternative competition held by German broadcaster NDR. This success led to The Roop receiving the LRT Award for “Ambassador of the Year”. This award is given to those who help spread the name of Lithuania around the world.

The Roop at Pabandom iš Naujo! 2021

The reigning Pabandom iš Naujo! champions are participating in Lithuania’s national selection once more. However, in acknowledgement of the fact that they never got the chance to perform at the cancelled Eurovision 2020, producers have given The Roop a guaranteed slot in the final. That means they don’t have to go through the heats and semi-final like the other 20 acts.

So that they’re not at any disadvantage, the band have also been given the chance to perform “Discoteque” in Heat Two on Saturday 23 January. This ensures that the Lithuanian public will be familiar with their song when the final rolls around in just over two weeks’ time.

What do you make of The Roop’s “Discoteque”? Do you want it to win Pabandom iš Naujo! 2021? Let us know in the comments below!

I think both songs are overrated, particularly this one. It is horrible, but I don’t hate the artists , for me the problems are the songs. (ready for dislikes btw)

That’s true. Even though I gave this song a chance I really didn’t like that. They will reach the finals only because of the Televoters. Juries would never have in their top 10 list a song like that.

Sorry Lithuania, but I expected more from The Roop. Sadly I can confirm that they are totally not winning Eurovision. Now I’m rooting for Keiino’s comeback

I like this as a standalone. I think it will take a while to not compare this to on fire but I do enjoy the concept of a lockdown disco and if it wasn’t the Roop and just a general act competing I think a lot of the negative reactions would be reversed.

So when are they being selected to represent Lithuania in May? I can’t see any other song being selected.

This is a bomb! “On Fire” had to grow on me but I liked this one already from the first listening. The video makes it even better. It’s also very clever to take some references from “On Fire”.

Sounds interesting. Probably will get the same hype as “On Fire” and top a previous hit is hard.

Well, it’s not even the same music style but for some reason they remind me of Les Fatal Picards… am I the only one? Back in 2007 the were considered freaks maybe it would have been different now. I love that song.

The whispering fits the concept, the character on this song is talking to himself after all. I already like the song the way it is, but for juries’ appreciation sake, maybe he could project his voice a little more during the chorus. But we’re in a Billie Eilish era. Eurovision jurors tend to be 1 or 2 years late, maybe they’re peaking for this kind of singing right now. Vaidota’s showmanship is incredible (plus, he’s very attractive, in a non-conventional way). I believe some that had bad first impressions would feel better about it if they started with the video… Read more »

The more I listen to it, the more I like it. And the more I feel The Roop and KEiiNO are somehow in similar territory. Both bands sound more sophisticated now. It’s like they took what made them unique in their previous entries and built something more elaborate around it. Maybe this hurts the initial impact of their tracks for some (which of course it’s a big deal in a contest), though it may happen just because they don’t have the surprise effect anymore, but now their songs have more to offer on subsequent listens. I’m in.

First listen… Not overwhelmed really. I appreciate it has a good concept and made to be a live song, but definitely isn’t a contender to last years efforts in my opinion. Compared to semi final 1 though tjis is still head and shoulders above the rest. Can’t see Lithuania being a strong contender this year, which is sad was looking forward to my eurovision holiday to Lithuania next year!

With good choreography it can be brilliant. If we don’t take into account the visual representation part, then On Fire is a better track, but both are quite good.

Interesting fact: the Roop had 4-5 standout songs for Eurovision out of 10+, before choosing “Discoteque”. It was not even in the standout songs list. However, the group has decided to step away from “On Fire” model and present something entirely new and unique (with some tiny bits of similarities, of course). This is how they came up with this song.

OK siong is much worse than “On fire” was, but I think everyone should wote for them because last year they had song that was 100% Eurowision winner and it is so shame they were not alowed to come ant take first place because of COVID-19.

Music-wise, I think this is stronger compared to “On fire”. Impact-wise, perhaps not as impressive. I still think this is a very edgy take on a dance number, I really like the vibe. With an appropriate amount of quirkiness and hunour in the live performance, this will be a standout act for sure. Should this go to Eurovision, it will definitely be up there to at least match Lithuania’s best result.

I think the fact that this song is so different from ‘On Fire’ speaks to The Roop’s talent, artistry and integrity. They’ve come up with a new song, choreography, image concept and gimmick and it’s just as original as ‘On Fire’! It may not be as catchy but I think this could bring about more of a ‘wow’ moment on stage, particularly if they make good use of backing dancers. If this had been submitted last year, we’d still have gone crazy about it!

Yeah, definitely not a copy. I’m just saying that when I heard it, I had to think hard what some parts of the melody reminded me of. Nothing wrong with a good inspiration. If it was note by note the same, then it would be a problem.

Good luck to them, it’s a good track. Not ‘in-your-face’, maybe not an instant hit, but it’s up there with a great chance to place very well.

I understand if many of you guys like on fire better, But you can’t deny one thing. As of the timing of this post late at night my time, discotheque has amassed over 130 K thousand views in just three hours! Wow! Loved “On Fire” and totally loving this! However, it’s hard to say whether “Discotheque” is as good for ESC purposes.
I mean, it lacks that memorable synth line from “On Fire” which many compared to “Bad Guy” and the choreo is now far from crazy. Overall though, as a realized concept with more mature attitude it is definitely a success. The chorus slaps me in half! Wishing The Roop all the best anyway, it’s a joy seeing them in the competition.

It just so funny how everyone compare “On fire” & “Discoteque”. Why don’t add “Yes I do” too? After all there three were songs they had in Eurovision selections so far. Anyway on serious note: I loved all 3 songs they gave us & I am not fallow or listen to their other songs, but I just love these 3. They all different & meanful in their own way. So Idk why some people believe that Lithuanian will vote cuz the artist & not the song. The Roop is indie group so of course it will give us something different… Read more »

We will see. I think it’s likely that they’ll be a diaspora qualifier because their semi is very strong and their song isn’t that good and instant. The whole chorous sounds like a pre-chorous and it gets boring. Sweden, Norway and Ireland will give big diaspora points to it, so they’re already more advantaged than other countries (except Russia of course, which gets even more diaspora points).

This song is fine. I never said, the song is bad. A lot of people like it because it’s the Roop and because a lot of Eurovision fans tend to support countries with a relatively weak history and which have good songs rarely. However, the whole audience doesn’t think like that and it reflects in the results.
But of course we can’t predict the results 100%. My initial thoughts just are that it will be a diaspora qualifier.
It’s the best song in Lithuania’s selection so far and deserves to win.
