At Eurovision 2016 he declared “You Are The Only One”, but now Sergey Lazarev is learning that it takes two to tango. The Russian star is strutting his stuff on the dancefloor as part of the new season of Танцы со звёздами (Dancing with the Stars Russia).

The Russian version of popular British dancing show Strictly Come Dancing, the format sees stars partner up with professional dancers as they learn the art of ballroom and Latin dancing.

Sergey Lazarev debuts on Dancing with the Stars Russia

On Sunday, Sergey took to the dancefloor for his debut performance on the show. Although this was the second episode of the 2021 season, the two-time Eurovision alum unfortunately had to miss last week’s premiere as a result of his flight back from Indonesia being delayed.

Despite turning up to the party a bit late, Sergey and his professional partner Ekaterina Osipova made sure to leave their mark once they were finally able to dance. The pair performed a fiery Argentine tango to “Natural” by Imagine Dragons.

The routine started off with dark lighting and smoke effects. From inside a ring of lights, Sergey and Ekaterina brought drama and intrigue from the very first beats of the dance.

Followed by a spotlight, the duo proceeded to do a series of lifts before moving into the main body of the dance. The Argentine tango is all about passion and chemistry between a dancing couple. Sergey and Ekaterina delivered this along with the intricate footwork of the routine.

For this season of Russia’s Dancing with the Stars, the judging panel consists of actor, director and choreographer Egor Druzhinin, TV presenter Darya Zlatopolskaya, choreographer Garik Rudnik and ballet dancer Nikolay Tsiskaridze.

Sergey and Ekaterina’s Argentine Tango received a positive response from the judges. They awarded the following scores:

Week Dance Egor Darya Garik Nikolay Total Score Position on Leader Board
2 Argentine Tango 8 8 8 6 30 1st

With a total score of 30 out of 40, Sergey and Ekaterina were ranked first on the leaderboard at the end of the show. Although they might have one less week of experience under their belt compared to the other acts, it’s clear that the pair are still very much a threat in the competition and could be there for the long run.

There was no elimination during this episode. Viewers have the entire week to vote for their favourites, with all eleven competing couples set to dance again this coming Sunday. No doubt Sergey and Ekaterina will be hoping to deliver another memorable performance and remain at the top.

What do you think of Sergey’s first performance on Russia’s Dancing with the Stars? How far do you think he can go in the competition? Let us know in the comments below!

I love Sergey Lazarev, I don’t understand Russian but he is the only Russian music I’m following. He’s so adorable, his music works after You are the only one era were so amazing. Even only his unique voice deserves more attention worldwide.

I absolutely LOVE Sergej, but in terms of dancing, it‘s a non-performance. He either stands still and let the woman do the work or makes lifts (that‘s not the key technique in dancing, but a show element that is added for TV) or he walks around like he‘s on a fashion show. The little actual dancing steps are technically inferior. He‘s still sexy as hell though.

As a former dancer, in what way is pas de deux not key technique? That takes years to perfect and requires a lot of skill.
