melodi-grand-prix-2021-semi-final-4

Emmy brought us spooky-realness on Saturday, but her urban streetscapes are already in the rearview mirror as Norway zooms towards Melodi Grand Prix 2021 semi-final four.

The fourth semi takes place on Saturday 6 February. Following a nearly identical format to last year, four acts will compete for one highly coveted spot in the grand final. But which of the four entries is your favourite? Who should advance to the next stage of MGP 2021? In a new twist, the three eliminated acts will remain in contention for a wildcard slot.

You can listen to all four entries below and then vote for your favourite. You can pick as many acts as you like, but you can only vote once. So choose wisely!

Melodi Grand Prix 2021 — Semi-Final Four Songs

Landeveiens Helter – “Alt det der”

Songwriters: Lars-Erik Blokkhus, Petter Bjørklund Kristiansen and Thor-Erik Claussen

They’re jokingly described as “Norway’s newest boyband” but Landeveiens Helter is a supergroup of Norwegian music legends – Rune Rudberg, Dag Ingebrigtsen, Lars Erik Blokkhus and Stian Staysman Thorbjørnsen. Three members have competed at MGP as solo artists, with Rune Rudberg a six-time MGP veteran. Staysman took part in 2015 with “En godt stekt pizza”. Dag Ingebrigtsen, however, will be the oldest MGP debutante. Their entry is their first single as a group and celebrates a long life, that despite some setbacks, has been worth living.

KiiM – “My Lonely Voice”

Songwriters: Kim Rune Hagen, Espen Andreas Fjeld, Vebjørn Jernberg and Niklas Rosström

KiiM — otherwise known as Kim Rune Hagen — got his start on Norwegian Idol in 2007 where he placed third. He performed with the group Spinning Foundation, took a break and pursued a career in real estate, then felt the call of music again. “My Lonely Voice” is about his own experiences and feelings.

Royane – “Circus”

Songwriters: Royane Harkati

Royane is an upcoming singer-songwriter who is also making a name for herself on TikTok and Instagram where she is known for her style and humour. Royane is a woman of many talents, taking responsibility for the hair, makeup and styling in her music videos. Describing her MGP entry, she says “I like to surprise and I like to run concepts. I look forward to sharing everything I have worked on. It will be chaos, fun and mysterious.”

Marianne Pentha & Mikkel Gaup – “Pages”

Songwriters: Vanessa Liftig, Robin Lynch, Marianne Pentha and Mikkel Gaup

Marianne Pentha and Mikkel Gaup are delivering the second joik entry into Melodi Grand Prix this year. Marienne got her start as a backing singer for country singers, but stepped into the spotlight in her own right on The Voice in 2012. She also provided the voice of Elsa in the Sami dub of Frozen 2. Mikkel Gaup appeared in the Oscar-nominated 1987 film Veiviseren and has an international reputation as a joik performer. Of the MGP entry, Mikkel says “It is a dream come true. This is a small victory.” This weekend’s fourth semi-final also falls on Sámi National Day, a celebration of the Sami people.

I like “Pages” a lot, it´s even better than “Monument”.

I’ve put a playlist of all 20 songs from MGP released for now and… good job, Norway! The line-up is diverse and pretty nice. Probably, none of the songs would deserve less than a 5/10. Many of them are solid on a similar level, which perhaps makes it harder for me to passionately invest myself in which song will qualify. There are some standouts, of course, but even that feels like it depends on my mood or the staging. From this semi, I’d likely go with either My Lonely Voice or Pages, but good luck to all.

I’ll go different. “Landeveiens Helter” would offer more to the grand final than the other entries. The voting choices in the previous semis have seemed more from the “younger” side, shall we say? So, it would be nice to get a bit more variety.

If a singer looks and sounds like a UK waffle baker faillure in Eurovision and the song reminds too much of the last winner, its a big NO If a singer has an awful voice and a cheap concept tries to be modern better put her back into her circus age. If a boyband is composed out of four fourty year old looking guys… Sorry its not gonna work either. So the there is only one song to save the evening. Luckily it is not rubbish but okish joiking that can compete with the song of KEiiNO, not because its… Read more »

I like Pages and see it as a clear winner! Hopefully the staging will further add to it. To be fair, the staging of MGP has been good this season.

All four songs are not bad, but I think Circus is the only song that has something special.

Wow surprised to see circus winning the poll so far, I really struggled to even listen all the way through of it. Pages is the standout song for me, and I look forward to seeing it in Saturday.

“My Lonely Voice” and “Pages” are my two favourites based on the audio, but that could change come the live performances.
