Roxen Romania Eurovision 2020

Last week she suggested that she had found “the perfect song for Eurovision”. However, now it seems that Roxen’s entry for the 2021 song contest isn’t in the can just yet. On Monday, Romania’s TVR announced that the “Alcohol You” singer’s song will actually be chosen by an internal jury.

Roxen’s Eurovision 2021 song will be selected by an internal jury

For the first time ever, all aspects of Romania’s Eurovision package will be determined by an internal selection. As we’ve long known, Roxen was reselected following the cancellation of Eurovision 2020. Now, the broadcaster has confirmed that her song too will be picked behind-closed-doors.

And while it had seemed like Roxen had a song ready to go, that is not the case. Instead, starting from 1 February, she will record a number of demo versions over the coming weeks. These will then be sent to a panel of experts which will choose the final song for Rotterdam. Presumably, Roxen’s “perfect” song will be included in the mix.

While Roxen was also internally selected for 2020, her entry was chosen using an adapted Selecția Națională. TVR explains that it’s not employing a similar method this year due to the pandemic. Firstly, COVID-19 has resulted in major budgetary constraints. Secondly, the requirement for social distancing and safety measures would make a televised selection difficult to organise. The delegation is using the hashtag #ealtceva to promote the process. It translates to #somethingelse in English.

“I really think the Eurovision slogan fits perfectly with the whole context: #something else . I had a completely atypical year, a lot of challenges and a competition that lasted for almost two years. But in the end, the most important thing is to be healthy and see each other well”, says Roxen. “I am also looking forward to finding out which song I will represent Romania with this year at Eurovision. Whatever it is, I hope you like it and enjoy it. I can’t wait to start the journey back to Rotterdam and recharge, together, with the best energy”.

There will be 6 songs in demo/unfinished format. Roxen confirmed it in a televised interview. She also said she recorded extensively and she is very happy with the 6 songs that were chosen in the end.

I know its standard practice for many countries, but I’m not sure how I feel about an act who is now well established, not having the artistic control or decision to what material they want to perform on a platform as big as ESC, that’s their own creative vision. Opposed to a countries broadcaster using an artist as their theoretical puppet to portray their agenda to the global audience.

I guess I’m just disappointed Roxen hasn’t been given the opportunity to have full artistic license, and may not represent herself how she’d hoped to.

Alcohol You was my favorite song at ESC 2020. I hope she can once again wow me.

Last year we knew what to expect, there were five songs in the running. Now it seems that secrecy is the word for some delegations. I’m enjoying this so much! Release the song ON the deadline! Think of this as an ESC experiment.

So funny. But what’s the deadline? Wiwi calander says “March 2021”. That can be *anything*.

Great news from Romania!! I won’t even bother to ask what the date for the release will be. I hope the song will be at superlative level. A song that Roxen will be comfortable performing. A song that will make Romania *proud*. And the fans happy. Since I *loved* “Alcohol You* from the first listen – and since it stayed my number one in Eurovision 2020: I would hope that the wonderful team of Breyan Isaac, Ionut Armas and Viky Red (in alphabetical order) will have a chance in 2021. If they want to give it a try of course,… Read more »

I’m starting to really doubt all of this „one singer, several songs” preselections. If an artist has a selection of songs they should really follow their gut and choose the song they like the most, feel comfortable with and enjoy the mood or the genre of the song. I get that want the community to be involved like in Eden’s case, but i have a feeling if it was all up to Eden, she would’ve choosen different than „set me free”. I hope they didn’t fotce Roxen to do more songs even though she found the one she really liked.

Considering how uncomfortable Roxen was on stage performing it, I doubt she is the one for delivering an uptempo-banger. She should stay true to herself…

I am so excited to hear Roxen’s song. Alcohol You was in my second place last year and I really want to see something similarly edgy, dramatic and challenging. The revamp elevated it even more so I know Romania knows what it is doing and can deliver!

So… technically speaking Selectia Nationala is the first NF to be cancelled because of COVID?
