UMK 2021 Songs In The Charts

Teflon Brothers x Pandora are at #2 for a second consecutive week on Finland’s official singles chart. And just like the last update, they’re being held off the top spot by the all-conquering “Drivers Licence” from Olivia Rodrigo. However, two more UMK 2021 finalists join them inside the top ten — Blind Channel and Ilta.

Blind Channel and Ilta enter the top 10 on Finland’s official singles chart

The chart for the fourth week of 2021 shows Teflon Brothers x Pandora as non-movers with “I Love You”. They were the only UMK act to feature in the last chart. Meanwhile, Blind Channel debut at #5 with “Dark Side” and Ilta lands just one spot below them with “Kelle Mä Soitan”. They are the two highest new entries in this week’s countdown. This means that half of the top six most popular songs in Finland at the moment are from UMK.

All three songs remain inside the Spotify top ten as of Wednesday, so there is a strong chance that they will crack the chart — which includes streaming and sales figures — again next week. However, none of the other UMK 2021 entries feature on the Suomen virallinen lista. While the list only includes the top 20 songs of the week, the absence of any of the remaining entries from the Spotify daily top 200 suggests that they’re not even bubbling under.

This level of chart success is unprecedented for UMK. Between 2012 and 2017, no Finnish Eurovision hopeful cracked the main chart. Saara Aalto ended the drought in 2018 when Monsters entered at #18 before peaking at #13. In 2020, Erika Vikman reached #5 with “Cicciolina”.

However, we have to go all the way back to 2009 to see a Finnish Eurovision song so high up the charts. Then Waldo’s People topped the countdown. A quick perusal of the archives shows that since Eurovision winners Lordi peaked at number one in 2006, only two other Finnish song contest entries have entered the top two in the charts – Waldo’s People and Teräsbetoni in 2008. Paradise Oskar, a songwriter on “I Love You”, reached #6 with “Da Da Dum” in 2011.

Recent entries from the likes of Softengine, Krista Siegfrids, Sandhja and Norma John made inroads on secondary charts, but none broke into the main countdown. Typically, international Eurovision acts perform better. Alexander Rybak, Emmelie de Forest, Loreen, Netta and Måns Zelmerlöw all enjoyed top 20 success.

I get the hype but i dont like blind channel at all. It’s a mess, the lyrics are nothing special. I dont get why these new bands are all copying what linkin park did years ago. That’s why rock is not mainstream anymore, you gotta reinvent musical genres. I predict that it’s not going to be as good live.

That’s a very good sign that UMK and Eurovision got back to their glorious days in Finland.

I Love You is massive on Spotify and i hope it wins because it’s a fun nostalgic song with Finnish lyrics. Otherwise, I’ll be happy with the rock song.

It is up to the staging IMO just like it happened in 2020.

It’s certainly my favorite of the Finnish entries. I hope it wins but I’ll tolerate dark side even if it isn’t to my taste

I’d be happy if any of these would win (just in the release order):

Oskr -Lie
Teflon Brothers x Pandora – I Love You
Aksel – Hurt
Ilta – Kelle mä soitan

Is it just me or is UMK turning into Star Wars? It is the classic battle between good (Teflon Brothers x Pandora) and evil (Blind Channel). Will love conquer or will I turn to the dark side?

Both sides of my personality are very pleased!

And shout out to Ilta as well, she has a fabulous song too!

I think the winner will be among one of these three

Yes, I think Aksel is already out of the race.

I find Teflon Bros X Pandora just SO catchy but I am curious to see how it will translate as a live performance. Blind Channel is equally enjoyable and I get the sense it may work better live. Regardless those are the two I am routing for, although UMK has brought quite a few fantastic acts this year!

I think that a translation isn´t really neccessary.

As in I wonder how well they will perform live (not translate the song) 🙂

I understand the popularity of the Teflon brothers song, but the chorus is just too repetitive for my taste. I hope for either Blind Channel or Ilta.

Well it is nice to see Aksel compete again, I think the entrant will be either Teflon brothers x Pandora or blind channel. They are the most popular videos out of the IMO 2021 entries
