I see potential in three of four of these entries. They are not as poor as most commenters here think they are; some have the potential to reach the listener. Denmark’s entries have had a particular way of doing that over the years; it’s no different this year, really.

Every year, folks predicts that Denmark will not make it to the final, that the songs are boring and generic etc. But the truth is Denmark has qualified for the final 12 of 16 times since 2004 and scored some pretty good results (and 1 win). People seems to like safe and radio friendly songs. This year is not any way different 😉

I kinda liked the first song by Nanna Olivia and thought “well there will probably be a still better song coming up”… alas, it was not to be. An overload of throwback 80’s pop, and all songs are completely predictable. I see that many people like The Cosmic Twins, but I can see literally every single note or twist in that song coming from miles ahead. Chief 1 is sort of fun but not terribly special either. Abacadabra is a nice song, but the title is really terrible. Sorry Denmark, I don’t think this is a good final.

What bothers me about most Danish selections is that all songs stick to their types 100%, and are predictable from their first 15 seconds (or less). The only dilemma is whether I find it possible to listen to the entire song. Here I find only 1 song that I wish to listen to again (Chief 1 and Thomas Buttenschøn).

I see a lot of people saying that either The Cosmic Twins or Emma Nicoline will win MGP, but I think Jean Michel’s song is more the style of Danish people.

Its pretty much a scandale that they arent a part of this line up..
They submitted a song for DMGP
and please go listen to it and watch how hopeless DR are in choosing songs.. They obviously dont care about DMGP and eurovision.. They just pick out dated and meh songs so they keep the show running but without going anywhere.. We need TV2 to take over.. Search “Ben and Tan afvist” on youtube at the end they play the song that did not make it.. Unbeliveable and sad.. Seriously DR need to go!

If anyone speaks Danish, can you please give us a clue on what Emma and Nanna are singing about? Their lyrics still remain unreleased and I’d definitely prefer having at least some core meaning before ranking anything. Thank you very much in advance. 🙂

Emma Nicoline wrote her song for a close friend, who needed help in a difficult situation, but wasn’t ready to accept it. Here’s a translation of the chorus lyrics: I’m standing right here You have a look around Your help is near But you don’t see a thing I’m standing right here Tell me what’s going on Tell them who you are Cause I’m right here Nanna Olivia‘s chorus speaks for itself in terms of what the song is about, so here’s a translation: You have tried to let go And you have tried to forget But you just can’t… Read more »

Emma sings about supporting one another when times are tough. Her song is dedicated to a friend whose issues overshadowed the help that Emma offered. About the song, Emma says: “Sometimes problems become so consuming that you don’t notice that there are people trying to help you.”

Nanna’s song is about getting over a heartbreak and reconciling with a love affair that did not turn out as one thought it would. She says that the song is a “pep talk”. ?

Better selection since a while. Leonora was my favorite for 2019 like Rasmussen for 2018. I love scandinavian language to ESC, and I dream of a new song in Danish since so much time. Only problem the jury. In 2019 the juries from Sweden, Denmark, Norway and Iceland have destroyed their respective songs in native languages. Denmark 2019 (Swedish jury 0 point – Swedish televoting 7 points / Icelandic jury 0 point – icelandic televoting 4 points / Norwegian jury 4 points / norwegian televoting 5 points) Iceland 2019 (Danish jury 0 point – Danish televoting 4 points / Swedish… Read more »

The problem is that they might very well have a translated version ready and aint clear rather it will be or wont be translated to danish.. Thats why the danish viewers aint voting for them.. Dont know if its a rule from DR that a winner should be translated to english for the eurovision so that might be the case here aswell so if you guys want it to win so you get a song in danish then you might get disappointed But thats why i think DMGP lack in winners or just songs in danish finishing high.. Nice bunch of songs. With these I believe the winner will definitely be chosen according to the strength and charisma of its live performance. On a first listen, “Øve os på hinanden” appealed the most to me. Well done DR for selecting 4 songs in Danish, it was a pleasure listening to all of them! 🙂

Abracadabra is the one that I keep remembering. I think as a ballad it will be memorable and stand out against other ballads. There is a uniqueness to it. Staging could really elevate it further. There is also potential for slight tweaks in a revamp to make this special.

Abracadabra stands out for me as the best. Star lig her, ive is panhinanden and sikver bullet are ok. Usually I dislike the danish preselection as most songs are very genetic and the singer quite nasal, but must adnit this year is better than other editions. Still a lot of bendered computer composed kinda music but it seems the algoritms found a way to please me more.

I miss some Aud Wilken or “Den eneste goth i Vejle” styled stuff but still, a pretty good selection that could come alive with the live performances.
Maybe Står lige her, maybe Øve os på hinanden, Silver Bullet, maybe Abracadabra can come alive, but I am also curious about Højt over skyerne, maybe even Hvileløse Hjerter.
It would be also nice to have a song in Danish language after some 21 English entries (no Danish since 1997, c’mon!)

Denmark always get Eurovision results that their bad, bad songs don’t deserve. They’ll probably qualify with one of these because, you know, Denmark.
Even when they have good songs, they end up not picking them…not that there’s anything particularly great in this selection.

Ok so Cophenhagen 2022 ain’t happening but hopefully something will come alive and jump out on the stage. “Silver Bullet” or “Beautiful”, there are simply no other choices. The rest are average to distastrous (even for the low quality standards Denmark has put into DMGP since 2014, “Højt over skyerne” ranks among the most horrible songs I’ve ever listened to in a national final)

I agree this is a weaker Danish final, but the problem isn’t that the songs are bad, they’re just mediocre All of Them. The cut from 10 to 8 also Hurts egen there aren’t Better songs. But to be positive as a Dane, I think that especially Fyr og Flamme has a chance, especially if they come Up with and English version for the ESC. Never underestimate the need for nostalgia in ESC. That being said, I don’t quite get the very negative comments from especially foreign fans. I mean, Denmark isn’t Sweden, but we still have a pretty good… Read more »

These are easygoing, likeable, uplifting, polished – very much Denmark doing what they do. I’m a little surprised at the number of negative comments. After the past year, I think there will be more of a hunger for “nice” songs than usual. I can see “Beautiful” and “Hojt over skyerne” doing really well if staged in a sincere, inviting way. With just a little bit of tasty cheese on top. These aren’t winners, but they’re solid.

Could I offer a suggestion? I think it might be familiarity. Denmark has a knack of presenting songs that you feel like you have heard before – the level of enjoyment that you then have is dictated by whether you liked the original song types. A lot of people tend to vote for what they are familiar and comfortable with and Denmark does a good job of giving the (mainstream) people what they want hence why they also do pretty well. This approach is unlikely to win you anything though as normally speaking the winner tends to offer something new… Read more »

Oh, you mean regarding actual success rather than personal ranking? That’s more complicated, as success tends to be median section between millions of personal tastes and some objective parameters. I guess that some Danish entries qualified for being perceived as cute, thus them being endearing overcame them being less eventful. Interestingly, the juries pushed them to qualification both in 2017 and 2019, while the only time the televote favored them (2018) was one time they didn’t go for that cutesy ”rainbows and sunshine” vibe. It’s also by far my favorite Danish entry of recent years. And their 2014-16 period wasn’t… Read more »

You know what? You have to applaud them for not having just an 80s inspired song, but n 80s EUROVISION inspired song.- it isn’t 80s chart pop, it’s genuinely a song that could have performed alongside Bobbysocks or Johnny Logan. Then to top it off they even decided “why not start a late 90s/early 2000s throwback craze too” with højt over Skyene.
