Last month he was confirmed as North Macedonia‘s act for Eurovision 2021. Now Vasil has confirmed the title of his song for Rotterdam. He will sing “Here I Stand” — and it’s a song with a deeply personal message.

Vasil broke the news of the song title on social media. As well as sharing the cover art, he also talked about the creative process behind writing the song:

“In the middle of the chaos and whirlwind of disappointments last year, I wrote “Here I Stand” in one breath without any specific aim or focus.

“I think it rose out of one of those special and rare moments in life when you are at one with yourself: able to let emotions flow in their purest form without self-judgment, freely and sincerely.

“I am deeply honoured that I will have the opportunity to represent Macedonia at Eurovision with a song inspired by my personal journey. They say that every human being carries at least one song within themselves. “‘Here I Stand’ is that song for me. I can hardly wait to perform it for you on the Eurovision stage! Thank you all for your love and support. Stay tuned and see you soon.”

And Vasil is representing his pronouns. On the cover art, “Here I Stand” is shown abbreviated as “HIS” — further suggesting the personal connection of the lyrics and Vasil’s creative involvement.

Vasil prepares to record “Here I Stand”

“Here I Stand” was internally selected by Vasil and a panel of Macedonian TV music professionals. While the panel has a “high number” of songs to consider from around Europe, it was Vasil’s own song that stood out the most.

Vasil wrote the melody and lyrics of “Here I Stand” and he will be working with Borche Kuzmanovski and Davor Jordanovski on the arrangement and production of the song.

The song will be recorded with a live symphonic orchestra at the FAMES studio in Skopje. As well, backing vocals will be recorded in Chicago by former members of the acclaimed Chicago Children’s Choir. Vasil himself is an alum of the choir and has worked with them many times since. Using the Chicago choir singers for backing vocals is something Vasil will be able to replicate with the new Eurovision 2021 rules allowing pre-recorded backing vocals.

And while details are known of the song title and the plans for recording, Vasil hasn’t said when the song will be released.

Vasil’s Eurovision journey

Vasil first graced the Eurovision stage in 2019 as a backing singer for Tamara Todevska, who went on to win the jury vote and finish seventh overall with the song “Proud”.

In 2020, Macedonian broadcaster MKRTV internally selected Vasil to represent the country as the main artist. His entry “You” was also internally selected. Unfortunately, due to the coronavirus pandemic, last year’s contest was cancelled and Vasil was unable to perform.

MKRTV has now selected him again for Eurovision 2021, where Vasil will finally get his chance to sing at the contest as the lead artist.

What do you think? What kind of style do you think “Here I Stand” will have? Tell us your thoughts below!

I just hope the song won’t be inspired by some LGBT experience he had.

Hopefully it comes up something similar like Jamala 2016! But not as emotional…

Lol I thought that the song was going to be released today and I watched MRTV the whole day only to realise that only the name of the song was released. I was a bit disappointed but that’s what you expect from our country lol

The fact that he wrote it himself means it’ll at least be more personal to him, and that can only be a good thing. Although with that title I just imagine him singing let it go from frozen, which honestly, isn’t a bad thing either!

Hope its more promising than the generic unispired title.

No more or less than generic than “Proud”. And no bought-in nonsense such as Cyprus, Malta or Switzerland. Looking forward to hearing this hope he surprises you all.

I didn’t have hope for Proud either. And I was correct. A standard generic preachy song that was helped by outstanding performance.

“I stand” is my second favourite song of the last ten years!! I doubt that Vasil will stand any “greater” 😉

He is one of the few artists that I have no excitement for unfortunately.. I just don’t enjoy any of his music and he seems nice, but I don’t feel any star quality coming from him.. and I kinda feel it’s gonna be really hard for him in the first semi.. it’s a shame that Macedonia qualified and achieved such a great result, but now they are most likely back to their old habits..

I think now that Tamara achieved the best result, they should probably have a good idea of how to stage an act which can go into the top 10 right? ?

Unlike “You”, “Here I Stand” sounds like a promising song title.

I think there’s a mistake, is it Here I am or Here I stand? If it’s the first one, it will be funny because it’s also the English translation for France’s Voilà.

Actually, it would translate as «Me voilà» or «Me voici».
