Anton Ewald New Religion Melodifestivalen 2021

Its been seven long years since Anton Ewald, one of Sweden’s most prominent heartthrobs, graced the Melodifestivalen stage. But now he’s back and this time he’s bringing out the big guns, performing his own song “New Religion” in the second semi-final.

Melodifestivalen 2021: Anton Ewald “New Religion”

Before entering our worlds as a singer, Anton was no stranger to the Melodifestivalen bubble. He first burst on to the scene in 2009 when he was one of Velvet’s backing dancers. In 2012 he accompanied both Andreas Lundstedt and Danny Saucedoas as a dancer. But in 2013 he was ready to grab the spotlight himself and performed the song “Begging”. He returned with “Natural” a year later.

Despite making the final on both occasions, Anton hasn’t been seen at Mello since 2014. That’s because he’s been living in Miami lately. However, he’s spent the past two months in Sweden to prepare for Melodifestivalen. He’s promised to release an EP shortly after the contest. He’s also working on a different project overseas, which will be released under his alter-ego Kim Wolfgang So its definitely no rest ahead for Anton Ewald. He’s here for business.

What do the “New Religion” lyrics mean?

The difference between Anton’s previous two Melfest entries and “New Religion” is that Anton is now the man behind the steering wheel from start to finish. He’s the main songwriter behind the song, along with Jonas Wallin, Joe Killington and Maja Strömstedt. And because of that, the track is near and dear to his heart. “Literally 2021 Anton Ewald is all Anton Ewald!”, the singer says in a recent interview with culturefix.co.uk.

But some things remain the same. Like his 2013 and 2014 efforts, “New Religion” is all about the dance and the groove. The lyrics, despite the title of the song, have absolutely nothing to do with religion. According to Anton, it’s about the magic that happens when two hearts, each scarred, come together, collide and make up a new story. Or, in this case, a new religion.

“My song was created when I sat down with the songwriters in a studio session. We came up with this bang-on melody for the chorus, and after that we just felt that we had the song, it was all set. You’ll get action, plenty of dancing, plenty of energy, and I’ll give it my all”, Anton tells SVT.

“New Religion” lyrics — Anton Ewald (Melfest 2021)

Here all alone in the darkness
Won’t you come play on my weakness
You know I’m here and I feel it
Come on

When we collide like a car crash
You’re my condition, my whiplash
Coming alive when we’re in distortion

When the lights are low
Oh, it’s calling
I can hear your

Distorted heartbeat play with mine
Baby don’t kill the rhythm
Baby don’t kill the rhythm

Do what you want to I don’t mind
We found a New Religion
Baby don’t kill the rhythm

You kick me down like four to the floor
I come alive every time your

Distorted heartbeat play with mine
We found a New Religion
Baby don’t kill the rhythm

Ain’t got no time for no silence
The sound of your voice is my guidance
You’re always there when I need it
Come on

You now that you’re my addiction
You got me loving this friction
Coming alive when we’re in distortion

When the lights are low
Oh, it’s calling
I can hear your

Distorted heartbeat play with mine
Baby don’t kill the rhythm
Baby don’t kill the rhythm

Do what you want to I don’t mind
We found a New Religion
Baby don’t kill the rhythm

You kick me down like four to the floor
I come alive every time your

Distorted heartbeat play with mine
We found a New Religion
Baby don’t kill the rhythm

We found a New Religion

Baby don’t kill the rhythm

We found a New Religion

Baby don’t kill the rhythm
I can hear your

Distorted heartbeat play with mine
Baby don’t kill the rhythm
Baby don’t kill the rhythm

Do what you want to I don’t mind
We found a New Religion
Baby don’t kill the rhythm

You kick me down like four to the floor
I come alive every time your

Distorted heartbeat play with mine
We found a New Religion
Baby don’t
Kill the rhythm

Love how his crying to no one exposed just how much heavy lifting the backing track was doing for him! Awful song, overrated singer, terrible dancing should have NQ’d but looks clearly played a part.

This is basically Young Blood but I think it’s just as great and I absolutely love it

Love it! already giving me The Weeknd vibes. I noticed that these last couple of years he’s been working as a songwriter for a handful of Melfest entries like for Olivia’s Never Learn in 2018. Glad he’s back on stage again singing heh heh 😉
