VICTORIA’s big decision is well and truly underway. On Sunday she shared the lyric video to “Imaginary Friend” — the first song from her debut EP a little dramatic and her second potential Eurovision 2021 song for Bulgaria.

She chose her timing carefully. In a press release, the singer-songwriter said “Imaginary Friend” works well for Valentine’s Day, as it is “not a typical love story” and focuses “on how unrequited love makes you feel.” If we reach back into our personal histories, that’s an idea that resonates with us all.

“Everyone can relate to this story because we all experience something like this,” she says. “Loving someone with all your heart does not always mean they will love you back. Sometimes the love is unrequited and you just have to move on with your life. The process of moving forward will be told by another song from the album. The stories of a little dramatic are well connected and I am sure when we present all the songs the pieces of the puzzle will come together.”

VICTORIA wrote the song alongside Cornelia Wiebols and Irma Eriksson Wadström, with Cornelia and Oliver Björkvall on production. The song was written during a songwriting session at the Bulgarian seaside in the summer of 2019.

Coming soon: VICTORIA’s other potential Eurovision songs

The Bulgarian team share more details of what’s to come:

“‘Dive Into Unknown’ will be the next release from VICTORIA’s potential Eurovision 2021 songs. The premiere of the lyric video will be on Monday at 20:00 Bulgarian time (19:00 CET) via eurovision.icard.com and via the official YouTube channel of VICTORIA.”

“After all the songs are released, a special online platform will be launched which will allow music fans around the world to leave comments and feedback about the 6 potential songs. This will be part of Bulgaria’s selection process for Eurovision 2021. VICTORIA and her team will also look for feedback from focus groups specialising in music, TV, radio and Eurovision experts to make their final decision.”

Victoria is one of the acts who I feel have the potential to win the contest this year. So far neither this nor Ugly Cry gives me winner vibes but I’m hopeful that one of her upcoming songs will.

I wasn’t a fan of her style of music last year and this gives me the same uncomfortable feeling. Something uplifting and cheerful would be great. Let’s hope the Mama’s will bring us exactly that ?

I’m really sad for how toxic every ESC community has became. It’s useless to stand firm in their opinion, pointing low everyone who has differents one – and that’s has been happening especially with some country’s fanbase. Do you like the song? Good, than listen it to. Do you think that a song is very close to other one? It’s ok, we have to respect others’s idea. Personally I’m not into this kind of music that Victoria is producing as her own style, trying to find her own identity. But that’s ok, people don’t have to understand my opinion –… Read more »

Wow this could be the one for Victoria! Has a strong chorus and a good message, every one struggles in life in corona time. People become lonely. This goes about a girl and she find peace in dreaming of an imaginary friend.

As kpopers, I really can relate myself to this song.. 12 points from me!

my top for Bulgaria rn:

  1. Imaginary Friend
  2. Ugly Cry

Both are good options, but Ugly Cry’s chorus just isn’t quite enough for me. Imaginary Friend is dreamy and reminds me of Tears Getting Sober, which I loved.

I stg why can people not understand that genres exist and just because two artists do the same genre doesn’t mean that it is plagiarism? Like, whenever there is a woman doing a pop song with an instrumental drop it is now Fuego, apparently (remembering the accusations hurled against Me Tana and Replay). And now whenever Victoria sends a slow ballad it’s ‘Billie’. Like, grow up people. Unless Victoria plagiarises an actual song, it isn’t plagiarism.

YES! And remember last year when that Estonian guy actually copied a whole section of lyrics from Billie and he was still a fan favorite, but when its Victoria….

Agreed. While I actually loved Jaagup’s song and wanted it to win, that lyric copying was much too obvious and was actual plagiarism. Victoria has done nothing close to that.

You have failed to notice it’s not only the same genre, it’s the whole package of unoriginality – song titles, lyrics, music videos. All in the same style.

I like this one a bit more than “ugly cry” I think, despite the fact that it might be the harder one of the two to stage. The tone of “Ugly cry” was just a little too edgy/dark for my tastes and I like how “imaginary friend” sort of tells a bit of a story. This one reminds me of “tears getting sober” more than the other one. Though I don’t think either song so far comes to its level yet. But that’s okay! She’ll have more songs for us and I’m sure we’ll hear the one that’ll beat it… Read more »

Long story short, both of these songs are good and could qualify, but I do not think that we heard the song that will go to Eurovision yet.

Her voice sounds lovely on this one, but I agree with those that mentioned a lack of a climax or stronger chorus. That said, I believe both “Ugly Cry” (I prefer it) and “Imaginary Friend” would qualify with ease and achieve a respectable result in the final. To match “Tears Getting Sober” though, she will need a little more. And I assume they’ll save their biggest bets to release later in the process.

I agree that Imaginary Friend won’t be Bulgaria’s entry, but artists such as Salvador Sobral, The Common Linnets and Ell/Nikki also didn’t have a climax and ended in the top 3.

Ugly cry is more interesting and captivating. Imaginary friend has potential but does not take you anywhere. Victoria is clearly talented and artistic so deserves the best. I’m intrigued to hear the other offerings.

“Imaginary friend” is a solid song. I would rank it this way:

  1. Tears getting sober (2020) = 9.5/10
  2. Imaginary friend = 7.5/10
  3. Ugly cry = 7/10

So nice to listen to, I could have it on repeat for a while actually. I can relate to a certain point with the lyrics, so that’s a plus for me.

On the other hand, as some of you lot mentioned, how can this be staged, it’s pretty much of a blur, hit or miss I guess it’s going to be. Also, they have to cut it – and I always fear the cuts.

Also, if you don’t mind me asking, ‘Valium’ should be removed from tbe lyrics right?

I like it more then Ugly Cry and Tears Getting Sober. It just has a prettier melody. There are the Billie vibes present but they are not overwhelming at all and this is just overall sweeter.
I do have a feeling we haven’t heard the best song out of the bunch though. 😉
Good luck, Victoria!

No no no!! Okay this is good , also Ugly Cry is good but don’t forget she was to win 2020 if the contest wasn’t cancelled. Tears Getting Sober is an absolute winner material and it was full of winner vibes , but her new songs have nothing to win Eurovision , they are good but not enough. Also i saw the titles of her EP and the names look so teenage , they don’t promise anything. I am sorry but she had to make a song just like Tears Getting Sober

Not to play the comparison game, but I really feel this sort of hits the right balance between Billie Eilish and AURORA, which is great because, at least from what she’s shown, Victoria has a great belting range.

I prefer ugly cry, UC has more ups ane downs, it hits you at the first listen. This sounds like whining for 3 minutes, with uniform key changes at wrong places.

I don’t think whining is the right word. It’s an excellent song and if any other country sent this then it would still be high in the odds. I agree that ugly cry is better but it doesn’t mean imaginary friend is whining

Well, I respectfully disagree. I would not call this excellent, especially because the “unrequited love” theme has been done in a much better way by Imerika just yesterday. In comparison, “Imaginary Friend” pales.

It’s a beautiful piece of art and such a dreamy song. I really enjoy Victorias style. It could also benefit from the new rules as well. I’m curious what the other songs sounds like though. As for this song I think it could be a hit-or-miss in terms of the staging and I’m not sure – since most of the audience will hear it just once – if it could appeal to the wider mass. I think this is the biggest discrepancy to Tears Getting Sober.

seeing the words ‘Eurovision 2021 – potential song’: okay let’s have a listen to it
.
after listening: it doesn’t look and sound potential. don’t you dare call it potential (sorry for being too harsh). Even “Ugly Cry” doesn’t look and sound like it. I still can’t understand how brave they are to call both songs potential. calling a song “potential for Eurovision”, while by default it can’t be, is not how it should be done.

Janet

potential means they will consider it to represent Bulgaria at Eurovision… which they will? Maybe it’s just an error with your English or sometbing, I’m not sure, but I don’t understand what the issue is with calling it a potential Eurovision song?

This is a song I would download, its a quality song but as some others have mentioned, I think Ugly Cry has more staging potential and although this song is very nice to listen to, it doesn’t have the same moment that TGS had. I’m very much looking forward to her other songs though.
