Juri Pootsmann Magus melanhoolia

Estonia’s national final, Eesti Laul, is back this year after lots of speculation from fans. Of the 24 entrants, many are returnees, and just like Uku Suviste, Koit Toome, and more – Jüri Pootsmann will try to win Eesti Laul again. He’ll be taking a different approach from his fellow past winners, singing “Magus melanhoolia” in his native Estonian.

Eesti Laul 2021: Jüri Pootsmann “Magus melanhoolia”

The 26-year-old hails from the tiny village of Raikküla. After his sophomore single hit #1 in the Estonian charts, he tried his luck in the Eurovision national selection with “Play”, which claimed a very comfortable win. Since taking the Eurovision stage almost five years ago, Pootsmann released eight new singles (including one with Eurovision 2015 alum Elina Born) and one full-length album. During that time, the former Eesti Laul winner experimented a little and developed a more mature sound. His 2019 single “Üksinda koos” also charted at #19 in Estonia.

This is the Estonian’s first participation in the contest since winning with “Play” in 2016. His return to the contest takes a very different approach. Language aside, “Magus melanhoolia” is also sonically very different from Jüri’s Eurovision entry. Full of sharp synth and high notes, the song is sure to attract votes from indie music fans, as well as from the singer’s usual fanbase. An accessible track entirely in Pootsmann’s native language with raw stabs of powerful synths that would add new sounds to the table at ESC 2021. He will perform “Magus melanhoolia” in the penultimate spot of the second semi-final.

What do the “Magus melanhoolia” lyrics mean?

Counting only 62 unique words, “Magus melanhoolia” is one of the most concise songs of this Eurovision season. But that’s a virtue of its own – it gets its message through in a very efficient way. The song consists of two short stripped-down verses and two booming synth-heavy choruses. The track is all in all two minutes long.

“Magus melanhoolia” is about a mixture of feelings regarding a social situation and letting go of melancholy. In the lyrics, Jüri seems to be considering forgiving someone for their past mistakes and sobering up, eventually “saying no”. The verses speak of drunken mistakes and show a feeling of uncertainty, with a dash of bipolarity, but in the chorus the singer seems to be very certain on the position he takes. “No, I’m saying no. There’s more of these kinds of mornings. I’ll wait for tomorrow”, Jüri sings.

English translation

Peata aeg ja lase lihtsalt olla mul siin
On peaaegu hommik, tean
Las ma teen veel mõned vead
Lihtne ja nii selge nagu olla see saab
Lasen kõik läbi endast ma
Tantsin päikesetõusuga

Sa ootad seda hetke kui ma otsuse teen
Kuid klaase võime kokku lüüa korra me veel
Kuid siis

Ei, ütlen ei
On selliseid hommikuid veel
Ootan homset

Magus melanhoolia sellel suvisel peol
Laulud mis on ammu peas
Mul on üledoos kõigest heast
Lihtne ja nii selge nagu olla see saab
Lasen kõik läbi endast ma
Tantsin päikesetõusuga

Sa ootad seda hetke kui ma otsuse teen
Kuid klaase võime kokku lüüa korra me veel

Ei, ütlen ei
On selliseid hommikuid veel
Ootan homset
Ei, ütlen ei
On selliseid hommikuid veel
Ootan homset

Stop the time and just let me be here
It’s almost morning, I know
Let me make some more mistakes
It’s as simple and as clear as it can be
I let everything go through me
I’m dancing with the sunrise

You’re waiting for the moment when I make up my mind
But we can clink our glasses together one more time
But then

No, I’m saying no
There’s more of these kinds of mornings
I’ll wait for tomorrow

The sweet melancholy at this summer party
Already memorized songs
I’m having an overdose of everything good
It’s as simple and as clear as it can be
I let everything go through me
I’m dancing with the sunrise

You’re waiting for the moment when I make up my mind
But we can clink our glasses together one more time

No, I’m saying no
There’s more of these kinds of mornings
I’ll wait for tomorrow
No, I’m saying no
There’s more of these kinds of mornings
I’ll wait for tomorrow

Those lyrics are quite relatable and very pretty. The song will stand out in Eesti Laul and would do the same in Eurovision.

He´s even my favourite. So much better than the overhyped Uku.

Jüri has one hell of a voice and this song gives me all the feels. Much better than Play. For that matter, everything else he has ever recorded is better than Play. He’s a really talented and interesting artist imho.
