Melodifestivalen 2021: Charlotte Perrelli “Still Young”
Charlotte Perrelli is a name that every Eurovision fan knows very well. Back in 1999, she won Melodifestivalen and represented Sweden at Eurovision, giving the country its fourth victory. Since becoming a Eurovision winner, she became a Swedish pop icon. In 2008, she decided to return to Melodifestivalen where she won again after a very fierce competition. She was amongst the favourites to win Eurovision that year, but only managed to come 18th.
She has entered Melodifestivalen two times since then, but with far less success. In 2012, she opened the fourth semifinal but crashed out in fifth place. Five years later, she threw away her schlager dance moves, picked up her guitar, and sang in Swedish. However, this seemingly impressed even less, as she came last in the first semi-final.
This year, she is back to slaying the dance floor, and by the looks of the odds, she’ll be sailing through to the final. The girl who won Eurovision as a 24-year-old is now 46, but she’s proclaiming to be still young.
What do the “Still Young” lyrics mean?
“Still Young” is composed by some very familiar Mello names. Thomas G:son is best known as the co-writer of “Euphoria”. Bobby Ljunggren co-wrote former Swedish hits “Invincible” (with G:son) and “Hero”. Erik Bernholm co-wrote “In a Moment Like This”, “Quédate contigo” and “Waterfall”, all with G:son. The three have also been behind Anna Bergendahl’s recent offerings “Ashes to Ashes” and “Kingdom Come”.
It’s a very simple song about the excitement of life despite growing older. “Times moving on, but it’s never too late”. Charlotte continues by referring to how life grows no less unpredictable with time. “And it won’t be easy, I probably make some mistakes, But I’ll do anything, no matter how much it will take.” Charlotte also makes us want to remember how far each of us come in our lives. “I’m thinking back, back to when we were kids, I could never have figured we’d ever have something like this”.
This theme continues in the chorus. “There’s no protocol, no crystal ball, that knows it all”. It also inspires us to never give up on our hopes. “There ain’t no dream too far to reach for you and me, cause we’re still young!” For someone who has been competing in Melodifestivalen for two decades, it’s a song that’s deeply personal to Charlotte. And given the large age bracket that watches Sweden’s biggest show, it’s a song that will speak to the audience as well.
“Still Young” lyrics — Charlotte Perrelli (Melfest 2021)
Written and composed by: Bobby Ljunggren, Charlie Gustavsson, Erik Bernholm and Thomas G:son
Times moving on
but it’s never too late
No, it’s not over yet
I still have some bets left to make
And it won’t be easy
I probably make some mistakes
But I’ll do anything
No matter how much it will take
Cause we’re still young
We are invincible
And there’s no protocol
No crystal ball
That knows it all
Cause we’re still young
Nothing’s impossible
You know there ain’t no dream
Too far to reach
For you and me
Cause we’re still young
I’m thinking back,
Back to when we were kids
I could never have figured
We’d ever have something like this
We’re getting older, but
You know I still feel the same
You know I’ll do anything
No matter how much it will take
Cause we’re still young
We are invincible
And there’s no protocol
No crystal ball
That knows it all
And you know we are young
We’re just getting started
And it’s the beginning
All that we wanted
Is still in our hands
And I’ll do whatever it takes
Cause we’re still young
There ain’t no protocol
No crystal ball
That knows it all
Invincible
We can’t be wrong
Cause we are young
Cause we’re still young
We are invincible
And there’s no protocol
No crystal ball
That knows it all
Cause we’re still young
Nothing’s impossible
You know there ain’t no dream
Too far to reach
For you and me
Cause we’re still young

I don’t mind an occasional harmless old-school schlager in MelFest (that you know has ZERO chance of winning but it’s still fun and nostalgic to hear) but this one just sounds super lame and like it was put together in 10 minutes. Bring back Linda Bengtzing, please! At least Miss Linda’s dated songs are super catchy.
Such a generic schlager pop, could the lyrics be more typical?
Charlotte Perrelli is the last person on Eurovision I thought would respond to my dms but here we are now
Still young, don’t forget me I am a star wanna be on eurovision stage this will help me protect my fame. Promotion channel Eurovision is big opportunity to reach wide audience. Money money money motivates me and keep me young. Back in 2008 flashy performance of hero with no soul but erotic Barbie on stage. It was obvious for promotion. Don’t like former winners coming back to eurovision and even achieving low position and even staying in national finals can’t get a ticket to eurovision. Ridiculous act after their victory. Sad and boring
