He won Melodi Grand Prix 2021 in February, beating fan favourites KEiiNO in the process. Now, TIX will represent Norway in Rotterdam with “Fallen Angel”.

While he originally performed the Norwegian version “Ut av mørket” (“Out of the Darkness”), he’ll sing in English at Eurovision 2021.

Norway in Eurovision 2021: TIX “Fallen Angel”

TIX, also known as Andreas Haukeland, is from Baerum. His stage name comes from the tics he experiences from Tourette syndrome, which he talks about regularly on his large social media presence. TIX became famous in 2015 with the song “Sjeiken 2015” and followed up with the album Domt og beromt. The album reached No. 2 in the charts, and thereafter TIX has regularly been releasing new songs to great success. His first No. 1 single was “Jeg vil ikke leve”, which was released in mid-2019.

TIX also co-wrote “Game Time” for American rapper Flo Rida and “Sweet but Psycho” for American popstress Ava Max. He also participated in the reality show Paradise Hotel Norway 2019.

What do the “Fallen Angel” lyrics mean?

“Fallen Angel” is written by TIX himself and is a synthpop ballad about unrequited love. It uses biblical imagery to convey the idea of a crush that one can never have because they believe they can’t match up. “How could she ever love someone like me? She’s out of reach”. He describes himself as the “fallen angel” and “there’s no way I’ll ever reach up to Heaven to you”.

TIX uses more of the biblical metaphors to reference the anguish of the situation. “I’m fighting all of my demons tryna tear me apart and I’m still not sure what you ever saw in me”. He sees his crush as the true angel and he can never be with her. “Cause I know Heaven’s your home, that’s where angels belong”.

He also believes that if he tried to be her partner, he’d just be holding her back in life. “And it won’t be fair if I keep you down here”. The lyricism is one of the strongest points of the song. The beautifully crafted metaphors keep the whole thing together..

“Fallen Angel” lyrics – TIX (Norway ESC 2021)

Written and composed by: Andreas Haukeland (TIX)

What can I say?
I can’t make her stay
When I know that she’s so far above
How could she ever love someone like me?
She’s out of reach

Here in the dark
Inside a hole in my heart
I’m fighting all of my demons tryna tear me apart
And I’m still not sure what you ever saw in me

No, I’m a, I’m a fallen angel
And no matter where my heart is
There’s no way I’ll ever reach up to Heaven to you

She’s so far out of this world
No way I could еver be with her
‘Causе I know Heaven’s your home
That’s where angels belong
And it wouldn’t be fair
If I keep you down here

Here in the dark
Inside a hole in my heart
I’m fighting all of my demons tryna tear me apart
And I’m still not sure what you ever saw in me

No, I’m a, I’m a fallen angel
Tryna fly but I’m not able, oh-oh-oh-oh
And I need you to know
That it’s okay to let me go
‘Cause no matter where my heart is
There’s no way I’ll ever reach up to Heaven to you

I’m a, I’m a fallen angel
Yeah, I’m a, I’m a fallen angel
And I’m still not sure what you ever saw in me

No, I’m a, I’m a fallen angel
Tryna fly but I’m not able
So, just let me go
‘Cause no matter where my heart is
There’s no way I’ll ever reach up to Heaven to you

Is TIX gonna film a music video for this song?

I’m relieved that the English version manages to keep the meaning of the Norwegian lyrics and at the same time avoid the song becoming too cheesy (the over the top staging is already too much, after all). I also would prefer the song being performed in Norwegian, but this hasn’t changed how the song ranks to me.

I love it! I thought that Norwegian version is perfect but this is much better! I don’t know Norwegian but I read the translation of lyrics and thought I understand and feel it perfectly. But I was mistaking! While I was listening English version I was crying and now I’m listening it for 1000 time and trying not to burst into tears. MASTERPIECE! Definately, my winner!

I was scared that I would be disappointed in the English version since I love the Norwegian so much. But I still like the song though I prefer it in Norwegian.. Still my winner!

I don’t mind the key change. I actually don’t mind (most of) the English lyrics. He has made no change in the instrumental at all, which was what I feared the most. Yet there’s things I miss from the Norwegian version, basically the original pitch of his voice (I don’t know how to explain it). The Norwegian version is my winner from tonight. The English one, not so sure about it.

I’m rooting for KEiiNO tonight and I have to say I’m much more relaxed after hearing the English verion with TIX. The song has lost so much of it’s character and there is a completely other feeling to it, making it much less appealing. The Norwegian lyrics hits you much more while the English seems constructed in some way. Hard to understand the song originally had English lyrics!

I dont get the hype, reminds me of Croatia 2019. But Roko’s song was 10x better and that was the boringest song that year.

I prefer the Norwegian version by a nautical mile!! In my book Stavangerkameratene did a better job in the translation of their song than TIX (though there I again prefer the Norwegian version). Please stop translating songs into English..

The structure of this song is like Taylor Swift’s Blank Space which isn’t a bad thing at all (compare and you’ll know what i mean ). In the English im missing the backing vocal echoes but i love both language versions and would love to see this win to represent Norway.

It has lost a lot of the charm of the Norwegian version.

The I’m a , I’m a part seems forced and the even the neiiii sounded better than No. Still it’s good musically but I wouldn’t vote for this version at ESC. A JESC type 66/33 mix with 66 being in Norwegian would be best in case he does win

Weird, that I as a Norwegian, find myself liking the song a lot better when it’s sung in English. I know the song was originally written in English before translated into Norwegian, but I don’t blame TIX for wanting to perform the song in English as it increases the entry’s chances of doing well in Europe considerably.

The English version is better than I had expected, but I still prefer the Norwegian one. The Norwegian lyrics come across as more genuine and vulnerable to me. Tix has said he feels he is better off doing the song in English if he gets the ticket to Eurovision. I think the Norwegian version would work even better

Ok, I really like this. Indeed I find the norwegian version better but it’s also the version we are used to. They did a good work with the translation. There was a fear that the song could be too cheesy lyrically translated because – well, we’ve seen a lot of this things when it comes to Eurovision – but they made it work without feeling that it’s too cheesy. And the Angel-Situation isn’t comparable with Roko’s Dream or Miro’s Angel. A thing that the language coudln’t change is the beauty in Tix’s voice and a feeling of ‘honesty’ and beliefe… Read more »

Hope he ditches the sunglasses tonight.. This would hit a lot harder if we can actually see the meaning of the song in his eyes!

I think he wears glasses because his eyes sometimes suffer from nervous tics (hence his stage name TIX)

I wasn’t a big fan of the original but after hearing the English version I like the Norwegian much more. It’s still an okay song but I just prefer songs in the language they originated in. Like Shaj from last year, Fall From The Sky was great but in Albanian it just felt so much better.

I was worried things would just get ruined if he sang in English. But I guess this isn’t that bad. The Norwegian version is still better.

Oh wow, now we have the English language version, this has hit me even harder. I always got the cool, modern vibe from it, but now it has a softness and sweetness that I hadn’t really picked up in the Norwegian version. I got goosebumps and started tearing up, which is absolutely not what I was expecting! That notion that our flaws mean we can never live up to the person we want to be – simply beautiful.

Sounds nice in English too, but I still prefer the Norwegian version of course. Hope he sings in two languages tonight.
