Sweden in Eurovision 2021: Tusse — “Voices”

Tousin “Tusse” Chiza is a 19-year-old Congolese-Swedish singer. In 2018, Tusse reached the semi-finals of Talang — the Swedish version of the Got Talent series. Soon after, he released his debut single “My Soul Is Calling You” — a tribute to his late mother. Tusse then went on to win the 2019 series of Swedish Idol after performing a cover of Conchita Wurst’s Eurovision 2014 winning track “Rise Like a Phoenix” in the final.

His song “Voices” was written by Melfest and Eurovision veterans Joy Deb, Linnea Deb, Jimmy “Joker” Thörnfeldt and Anderz Wrethov. Joy and Linnea previously worked together on many successful Mello entries including Måns Zelmerlöw’s “Heroes” — the Eurovision 2015 winner. Meanwhile, Anderz is one of the songwriters behind Melfest champion John Lundvik’s winning track “Too Late For Love”, which placed sixth at Eurovision 2019. As well, Thörnfeldt appears as a songwriter on five Melfest 2021 songs — including Eric Saade’s “Every Minute”.

What do the “Voices” lyrics mean?

“Voices” is an electro-pop song, with a slightly dark feel to it. The chorus frequently mentions the lyrics “a million voices” — a phrase that did especially well for Russian singer Polina Gagarina at Eurovision 2015. The “Voices” lyrics are about unity, hope, perseverance and freedom.

“My song happened when I was sitting in a session with Joy Deb and Linnea Deb and the rest of the group”, Tusse tells SVT.  “We were writing music, but nothing felt right, and nothing felt close to the heart. But then it transpired that they had already written such a beautiful song that I got to hear. I just said: ‘That’s the one! That’s the one we should go for.’ The song is about fellowship, freedom and the importance of all voices being heard.”

“Voices” lyrics — Tusse (Sweden ESC 2021)

There’s fire in the rain
But we’ll get up again
We’re thousand miles apart
But we’ll overcome

I’ll never let you down
World is turning us around
But I feel it in my heart
Let’s make a brand new start

Can’t stop us now forget the haters
Get up and live and make it matter
There’s more to life so go ahead and
sing it out

Can you hear
a million voices
Calling out
in the rain
You know we got
a million choices
So go get out
and let it rain

A million voices voices
A million voices voices
A million voices voices
A million voices

There’s fire in the rain
And I can feel your pain
Painting all the scars in
The colours of change

Don’t let them hold you down
Don’t let them hold you down
Go shooting like a star
The star you are

Can’t stop us now forget the haters
Get up and live and make it matter
There’s more to life so go ahead and
sing it out

Can you hear
a million voices
Calling out
in the rain
You know we got
a million choices
So go get out
and let it rain

Can you hear them
A million voices voices
Can you hear them
A million voices voices
Can you hear them
A million voices voices
Can you hear them
A million voices

Can you hear them?
Can you hear them?

Can you hear
a million voices
Calling out
in the rain
You know we got
a million choices
So go get out
and let it rain

Can you hear them
A million voices voices
Can you hear them
A million voices voices
Can you hear them
A million voices voices
Can you hear them
A million voices

” A Million Voices ” did it much better.
Even “The Greatest Showman” did it better wit that lyric!

After years of being on this earth I can honestly say the “Let’s save the world”, “Children are the future”, “Love is all we need” type of anthems aren’t giving me anymore excitement.

USA for Africa was the last one of these type of songs that lived up to it’s hype. And that was over 20 years ago!
