The temperature is rising on Eurovision 2021 as “El Diablo” steps into the frame. On Wednesday, February 24 — that’s tomorrow — Elena Tsagrinou will share her official music video for the song contest in Rotterdam.

The Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation and Panik Records have teased the release with stunning cover art, which shows Elena in devilishly good form. She dons a red dress, but this is no ordinary Lady in Red. She’s more fashion-forward with a gown that hangs from two oversized shoulder panels, which cut to a deep V below her cleavage. Unfazed by the hype and poised to unleash that voice, she stares straight at the camera with her golden tresses pulled back to show-off all of her face — from smooth forehead to finely sculpted eyebrows to perfect pout. Overall, it’s a confident look that says I am here, suggesting she’s ready to battle the devil — and whatever else life may throw her way.

Elena Tsagrinou’s “El Diablo” video premiere

The video will premiere on Wednesday February 24th on Happy Hour — the afternoon show of CyBC1. It airs daily at 3.30pm CET. The show is also available via ΡΙΚ SAT.

From 5pm CET on the same day until the night of Saturday February 27th, the music video will be exclusively available on Panik’s website, www.panikmusic.gr, as well as on the app for Panik Music available for both iOS and Android platforms.

“El Diablo” will be released on all digital platforms on Sunday February 28th. On the same day at 6pm CET the music video will premiere on Panik Record’s Official YouTube Channel.

As you can hear in the brief teaser below, it will feature dynamic production with a hint of the weird — adding spice and flavour to what we assume is a modern pop sound.

“El Diablo” was written by songwriters and producers Thomas Stengaard, Jimmy “Joker” Thornfeldt, Laurell Barker and Oxa.

“The music video, directed by George Mpenioudakis, is as modern and dynamic as ‘El Diablo’ with Elena Tsagrinou taking centre stage and accompanied by male dancers,” Elena’s team says. “The fashion creations presented in the video are signed and designed by the internationally acclaimed Greek fashion designer Celia Kritharioti. Chali Jennings, the successful American choreographer, is behind the choreography of the song for the music video.”

Are you excited to see what Cyprus has up its sleeve? Are you living for Elena’s look? Let us know down below!

The verses are on fire, the chorus slaps and is easy to remember, and the end is a bit laughable but in a very good way. This has also a lot of staging potential and appeal. On top of that, it’s not wat Fuego or Replay was. I’m really rooting for this and I do believe that this can get a very respectable result for Cyprus. Congratulations! Elena GOT ME HYPED!

Soldiers of Love, Where I Am, Higher Ground, Love is Forever and Yes aren’t part of a cohesive pattern though, nor are the FiK songs, when compared to what Cyprus does. Also the issue is not just similarity, but pseudo-plagiarism – Fuego and Replay are not just in the same genres, they have very similar beats and structures – listen to a mashup of the two and it’ll be very clear. If the same team weren’t behind both songs it would have been even more fishy. That’s where a lot of the critiques stem from, especially when the artists themselves… Read more »

“Pseudo-plagiarism”? Really?
Tons of artists/songwriters have a characteristic sound that uses the same combination of elements.
eg You could instantly hear a song by Billie and realise it’s hers.
I guess you won’t have an issue this time since the songwriters are different?
Just say you don’t like a song, it’s really not that deep…

Albania – 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2019, 2021 all women singing ballads and high notes with some differences, such as some are more dated than others and some are in albanian and some aren’t, otherwise a very similar pattern.

Are we listening to the same song contest? Denmark and Albania following specific pattern? Agree with Belgium though and they learned it the hard way with consecutive NQ

Denmark and Albania kinda do follow their own pattern, with 2018 being an outlier for both of them. Woman with a belting ballad is kind of a signature sign for most recent Albanian songs. Danish entries are somewhat more diverse in style, but they mostly share an easygoing, positive vibes. None of them comes close to inspiration from each other like Replay does to Fuego, though. But it only one case, so I am ready for El Diablo being something different.

It’s called negative thinking. It’s a poison for the soul.

It reminds me of them idiots sending complaints to Ofcom. If you don’t like it, just change the channel. It’s that simple. If you don’t like it, vote for someone else. It’s that simple.

Or is it just critical thinking? We’ve seen Cyprus giving us this before with Tamta and we know what the package includes: Sex appeal, Pop song with a Spanish word, Swedish songwriters. I mean this is just a disaster coming into flames if CyBC keeps doing this.

In other words: Monotonous

Benny Hill
Reply to  Duh

Again I see negative thinking. There’s literally not a single Spanish word in ‘Replay’. Composers Of ‘Fuego’ and ‘Replay’ are different to the ones who created ‘El Diablo’. Hans Zimmer and Frank Farian are both German and they make totally different music. So we shouldn’t necessarily assume that all the Swedish writers make similar sounding songs. Although this year’s Melodifestivalen offerings might make you think that. I’m not ashamed, nor afraid to admit that I am wrong and I might have to do just that later when I hear the song. But please do your research when you’re coming at… Read more »

Totally forgot Tamta’s song didn’t have spanish at all, my mistake.Hans and Frank are both German, so why compare when both have same nationality. Same with Swedish writers. But you can’t argue with these similarities:

Spanish title: 2018, 2021
Female singer (not cypriot): 2018, 2019 & 2021
Swedish songwriters: 2018, 2019 & 2021
Greek singer: 2018, 2019 & 2021
Dancers on stage: 2018, 2019 & 2021

There is a clear pattern and it’s starting to show. We just need to see for tomorrow if there’s more than this.

Benny Hill
Reply to  Duh

Spanish title is not a pattern. Something has to happen at least 3 times to constitute a pattern, according to the definition. I’ll give you the rest. Although not sure what is the problem with the female singer and dancers on stage. It’s a show, for crying out loud. And I still don’t understand these xenophobic comments regarding their nationalities. Celine Dion represented Switzerland in 1988 and it wasn’t an issue. So after dissecting your comment, what’s left is Swedish composers. And I agree. Would be nice to hear something created by locals. Pardon my frequent food analogies, but it… Read more »

Of course they can have women representing the country in a row, it’s just that if we compare the three men from 15-17 to the women of 18-19 & 21 we get this:

2015: Ballad
2016: Rock (band, not solo)
2017: Pop

2018: Dance-pop
2019: Dance-pop
2021: Dance-pop

Blind Channel’s entry seems like a bad example to go for, since Finland last sent a rock band in 2015 (well that was punk, but still).

Why is a bad example? ‘Dark Side’, great and very enjoyable for me as it is, resembles some of the hits made by Linkin Park or P. O. D. There are many similar songs that are great. One of my favourite examples is Czeslaw Niemen’s ‘Dziwny jest ten swiat’ which is clearly inspired by ‘This Is A Man’s World’. However it found a great success around the Europe and became iconic. And what’s wrong with the same present? It’s like grandma giving you a pair of socks every year for Christmas. You might think it’s boring, but you still wear… Read more »

It was a bad example, because all of the complains here that I have read are about how Cyprus has sent in the last four years the same concept; female singer, pop song with spanish title and so on. Where as you compared to Finland with Blind Channel, and we all know Finland hasn’t been sending a rock band year after year. Everyone’s favorite game: Guessing how an unreleased entry will sound like. Okay, I’ll join! 😉

Instead of guessing will it be good, I’ll try to guess the topic.

Will it be:

A) I am el diablo – A ”seductive boss woman” metaphor

or…

B) You are el diablo – A diss entry to a guy who is bad for her, and she’s getting out of a toxic relationship.

I sense this will likely be about personal empowerment either way. 🙂
