Zara Larsson Elena Tsagrinou El Diablo

It’s only been out for only a few hours, but everyone already has an opinion on “El Diablo” — Elena Tsagrinou‘s Eurovision 2021 entry. Comparisons to Lady Gaga, Eleni Foureira and Tamta have all been bandied about. But the chatter isn’t limited to Eurofans. The internationally acclaimed Swedish popstar Zara Larsson also has thoughts.

Zara Larsson on “El Diablo”

The woman behind international smashes such as “Lush Life”, “Never Forget You” and “Ruin My Life” took to Twitter to share her view on Elena’s new release. Quote tweeting the official Eurovision account’s “El Diablo” announcement, Zara writes: “Let me call my girl Mia Khalifa real quick”. For many, the meaning behind Larsson’s tweet won’t be immediately clear. But, with a little background, one can possibly deduce what she’s inferring. Let’s explain.

Back in July 2020, Zara had a bit of an online spat with Mia Khalifa, a pornstar turned media personality. Then Mia accused the Swede of being “sad trash” and “unoriginal”, claiming that Zara’s “Love Me Land” music video was too similar to that for Alice Chater’s “Hourglass”. The tit for tat continued when Zara thanked Mia for the free promo. Mia soon retracted her original comments and apologised.

There are a few potential interpretations of Zara’s “El Diablo” tweet. One she is pulling a Mia Khalifa herself and accusing Elena Tsagrinou of being unoriginal. Alternatively, she’s calling out Khalifa once again. And quite possibly she’s just having a laugh at the whole thing. Whatever the interpretation, fans have their popcorn at the ready.

As for Elena, she’s probably pulling a Zara on Zara and thanking her for the free promo.

You can watch the music videos for both Alice Chater’s “Hourglass” and “Zara Larsson’s “Love Me Land” below. “El Diablo” is available exclusively on the Panik website until Sunday.

What do you think of Zara’s tweet? What’s your interpretation? Let us know below.

It’s funny coming from a 1000000th pop artist that is barely two decades old and have copy-pasted all other pop arists since the beginning of pop culture. I love how every pop artist thinks they’re unique. Bro…xD less that 0.00001% of pop artists nowadays are “unique”. I don’t think anyone has a right to criticize anybody over copy-pasting. Even Lady Gaga copied Cher, Madonna and Grace Jones… SO WHAT?

I would just like to thank Zara Larsson and Elena Tsagrinou for promoting Alice Chater to the Eurovision fandom because not only does she deserved the recognition too but also because I want her to represent the UK at Eurovision someday (she was in my wishlist before and she’s really good and could click well with the ESC community).
And yes, she’s British.

Wait. We live in a world now where musical artists are worried about what pornographic actors think of their work now and respond when they have something to say about it?
I suppose it’s easier than responding to professional critics. 😉

Well nobody said that, did they? Sex workers can enjoy and have opinions about music as much as anyone else, obviously. But, at the same time, I wouldn’t expect Zara Larsson to make a social media post responding to what her mailman thinks about her latest song either. My last sentence was more a poke at the TiX article from the other day where he thought it was borderline bullying (it wasn’t) that professional critics thought his music was representative of the lowest form of Norwegian music yet Mia Khalifa calls an artist “Sad Trash” for having a slightly similar… Read more »

I there an insurance that takes the costs, if you get sued by Lady Gaga and Zara Larsson? Just asking – no hate

You know

no insurance for such issues as they are illegal in the first place – it means the insurance would have to take the responsibility for something that is already forbidden (in this instance, copyrights). even though strictly speaking, in law, ideas cannot be copyrighted only material items – which means that – if I make a videoclip with me in the centre dancing like feeling it – well, this won’t necessarily fall into the illegal “spectrum”. it requires more copying and of course, it all finally depends which jurisdiction is appropriate. Each country has different laws on stuff like that.

I guess when you take another country’s artist (Greece), another country’s songwriters (Germany), another country’s language (Spain), another country’s stager (Austria), another country’s video (Sweden), another country’s music refrain (USA)—this is truly building bridges Eurovision style. All that’s missing is an Norwegian playing the violin and a Ukrainian dancing in a mirrored ball dress and we would have the perfect trifecta.

Zara and Gaga should bandy together and take her to court haha. Great song and video but it’s so blatant it’s almost comical. Even the outfit. The platinum blond hair. Half mercy—they could’ve at least changed the color palette on the lights. They could’ve gone all red for el Diablo. It would’ve been less obvious or jarring.

Hmmm drama for Cyprus haha there was a break last year and now the drama returned.

Cyprus shouldn’t send another Swedish song, you know these guys are very unoriginal when it comes to music, yes they produce catchy pop tunes but unoriginal.

Also, the team has transformed Elena into another version of Zara/Rita Ora with some lip injections. I don’t get why they felt she had to be someone else other than herself.

Nevertheless, this is going to quality to the final as the staging will be superb but it might struggle with juries.

Most countries send unoriginal entries but it’s always Sweden or actually modern pop songs that get the harshest treatment when it comes to originality. Why is that?

I’ve heard people that loved Albina’s Tick-Tock complain about the lack of originality of “El Diablo”… but Tick-Tock is just as unoriginal?

It depends on the who and how. I hate “xx is a copy of yy” being used to drag down XX, such as Loic, Netta or Athena, but if it is a fair comparison, such as “if you like yy, you will like XX” that is flattering and one of my fave things about the contest. I have tried to introduce many fans of these contemporaries to ESC faves of mine like Athena and have had some successes (I think that actual fans of Ariana and Normani like Chains far more than keyboard worriers accusing her of ripping them off)

In the Eurovision field, keeping some distance cause I’m talking about a live performance and not a videoclip, you have something like S!sters from Germany in the national final, which is the exact same concept: square in the floor, dark “room” (stage in this case) and just a bit of light.

In the audiovisual field, you can find the same idea in movies like “The Platform” (Netflix).

If we talk about commercial music, we have the same idea or similar in artists like Zara Larsson and Lady Gaga.

The idea is generic and can be applied in too many genres.

For Sisters : the outfit, hair, lighting was different. Also there was no similar choreo, and the camera cuts were really different (but it was a live performance so okay). I mean, if you wanna talk about outfits and hairs, Zara in her clip looks like Tamta in Eurovision 2019. What Zara did is not really original, it’s just a mix of really old ideas, she (or her team) invented nothing, that’s the point here. You’re defending the originality of a project that is not original.

I mean yes she didn’t create that hairstyle ahah. But when you find all the elements of a whole package in another package it’s more than a coincidence to me. If I was concerned that this was a copy, these are the people I would want to hear from most.

  • The music video was directed by George Mpenioudakis,
  • Fashion creations signed and designed by Celia Kritharioti.
  • Chali Jennings is behind the choreography

Yes, it is the artist’s name, and she bears some ownership over what she presents…but these are the people who are making the creative decisions. An artist at her level might have some say, but is unlikely to be proposing music video concepts.

With that said….I still love the song and video LOL.

Sorry, art nerd here. I have no opinion on the song so I’m not going to talk about that, but copying the work of masters is a classic and time-honored practice for artists. It teaches, for example, creating specific effects and using brushstrokes.
But these copies are just for the artist’s reference, they are not to be sold as their own work.

I don’t know about Picasso’s copying, though.
