He’s the Surinamese singer who will represent the Netherlands on home soil at Eurovision 2021. And next week, we will finally know the song that Jeangu Macrooy will perform at the Ahoy arena in Rotterdam on 22 May. Dutch broadcaster AVROTROS has revealed that Jeangu will present his song on 4 March.

The date of the song reveal was announced through a funny video posted to Jeangu’s Instagram page.

Jeangu’s Eurovision 2021 song to be premiered on 4 March

In the Instagram video, we see the star rehearsing for his Eurovision 2021 performance. But, just before he starts singing, Jeangu notices a camera in the room. Not wanting to give away any spoilers, Jeangu chases the camera out of the rehearsal room.

Before closing the doors, he says we’ll get to hear his Eurovision song on March 4, and that there won’t be a sneak peek until then.

In recent years it has been customary for the Netherlands’ Eurovision representative to premiere their song during TV show De Wereld Draait Door. However, that talk show ended last year. For 2021, broadcaster AVROTROS has opted for a live stream that will immediately share the song with the Dutch public and the rest of Europe.

The live event will be broadcasted on the AVROTROS YouTube channel. It is set to start on Thursday 4 March at 19:00 CET.

A few lucky fans will also get a digital front row seat and be given the first opportunity to talk to Jeangu about the song and ask him questions.

Jeangu’s Eurovision journey

Jeangu Macrooy was initially chosen to represent the Netherlands at Eurovision 2020 with his song “Grow”. Sadly that didn’t happen since the contest was cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The Surinamese singer-songwriter had wanted to create a moment with “Grow”. The ballad about sharing your struggles with others would have been staged in a very thoughtful way. In May last year, Jeangu told wiwiblogger William that:

“It was going to start very intimate and very small — as if you’re sitting in the room with me while I was writing it the first time. But also the end is quite euphoric and hopeful. So, that was going to be a steady growth in the way the visuals developed and I wanted really the end to be this explosion of optimism and hope”

The Dutch broadcasters re-selected Jeangu to compete at Eurovision 2021. Over the past few months, he has been busy creating his new Eurovision song, and he is now ready for the world to hear it in a week’s time.

Last October, Jeangu spoke about the process of creating the song for Eurovision 2021. Back then, he stated that he did not really know what criteria he had for the 2021 entry – according to him, it is a feeling. “Sometimes you just know. Sometimes you can feel everything, this is something that is just a bit more special than the other things I have written in recent times ”, said the singer. That was also the case with his 2020 song “Grow”. “You can’t force that, it just happens.”

As the Netherlands is the host country for the 2021 contest, Jeangu gets an automatic spot in the grand final. Last November, it was determined that he will perform in the 23rd spot in the running order.

What are you expecting from Jeangu Macrooy’s Eurovision 2021 song? Do you think it will resemble “Grow”? Or do you think it will be something different? Let us know in the comments down below.

Last year he gifted us a brilliantly written song, the lyrics had so much depth and emotion to them, simple yet magical.

I have really really high expectations for the Dutch entry and I’m sure he’ll deliver.

I have always thought that grow was being underestimated and that the staging would really elevate the song and showcase the meaning behind it! Cant wait to hear his 2021 entry!

I am so exicted for his song. Grow was one of my favorites last year. A lot of people didn’t like the abrupt ending of it, but I loved it, it made the song unique and the abruptness is comparable to life.
