Eurovision 2021 Acts 28 February

Right now we’re in the calm before the storm. Because from Thursday we’ll enter a period of almost two weeks in which we’ll get more than half the songs for Eurovision 2021. But before that, it’s time to ask — who is your favourite Eurovision 2021 act so far?

Finland’s Blind Channel topped the last survey — can they hold on with fresh competition from Cyprus, Germany, Ireland and Slovenia?

You can listen to the four new entries below. Then vote in our poll. Choose wisely, you can only vote ONE time. Voting is open until Wednesday 3 February — the day before Jeangu Macrooy and Natalia Gordienko release their entries for the Netherlands and Moldova respectively.

Eurovision 2021 entries as of 28 February

New entries

Cyprus’ Elena Tsagrinou with “El Diablo”

Cyprus kicked off a four-day streak of internally selected song reveals on Wednesday. Elena Tsagrinou’s “El Diablo” premiered on an afternoon chat show. The Lady Gaga-esque bop quickly lit up the Twitter-sphere with even international pop stars having their say on the video. It also ruffled the feathers of Christian groups on the Mediterranean island. Elena is probably just thanking them all for the free publicity.

Germany’s Jendrik with “I Don’t Feel Hate”

After the slick cool pop of 2020’s “Violent Thing”, Germany’s gone a full 180 and delivered what will probably be one of the quirkiest entries in the 2021 contest. Jendrik’s “I Don’t Feel Hate” arrived on Thursday, complete with a six-minute music video featuring exploding washing machines and a human-sized middle finger. The song has been compared to marmite — you either love it or hate it.

Ireland’s Lesley Roy with “Maps”

Re-selected after 2020’s cancellation, Lesley Roy dropped her 2021 entry on Friday morning. Following on from “Story Of My Life”, “Maps” is another upbeat pop anthem. But this time the sound is more grown-up and current. Lesley has confirmed that her Rotterdam staging will be overseen by Fredrik “Benke” Rydman — the man behind Sweden’s “Heroes” staging in 2015.

Slovenia’s Ana Soklič with “Amen”

The latest addition to the Rotterdam roster came on Saturday evening, during Slovenia’s EMA 2021. For one year only, the annual event acted as a showcase rather than a competition. So while the country celebrated 60 years at the contest, last year’s winner Ana Soklič debuted “Amen” — her song for 2021. She’s parked the traditional sounds of “Voda” in favour of gospel and broadway elements.

Other entries

  • Albania: Anxhela Peristeri “Karma”
  • Croatia: Albina “Tick-Tock”
  • Czech Republic: Benny Cristo “Omaga”
  • Finland: Blind Channel “Dark Side”
  • France: Barbara Pravi “Voila”
  • Israel: Eden Alene “Set Me Free”
  • Lithuania: The Roop “Discoteque”
  • Norway: TIX “Fallen Angel”
  • Spain: Blas Cantó “Voy a quedarme”
  • Ukraine: Go_A “SHUM”

I know it’s not the general opinion but of the 2020 returning artists Benny Cristo has the worst development. I really liked his 2020 song, among my favourites.
I never understood the hype for The Roop’s 2020 song, so for me it’s a major improvement with a song in my top 3 so far this year.

Ukraine ofcourse, as always they send something different, unusual, interesting both music and lyricwise and they do very well in the end even win. Cyprus, we all heard 2019 entry was copy paste of 2018 because they got 2nd position then and thought why don’t we recycle that song and paint and decorate it to make people think it’s different song lol then what happened the result was a big difference between 2018 and 2019 and this year they are sending another erotic but dated club song, oh please, wait and see what result will be, low ofcourse. I am not sure why the language makes it more personal? He can speak English very well so not sure why he can’t express himself in that language if he so chooses? And I won’t dignify the “circus” comment as you obviously don’t understand the meaning behind the song.

Of course using your language makes your composition more personal. Why using a different one anyway if Norwegian sounds great?

My top three are

  1. France
  2. Cyprus
  3. Croatia

So far, there is no song this year that I HATE, a few that I don’t love as much as the others, but I generally like all of them! This year is shaping up to be great! I love france for it’s cultural, lyrical, and emotional beaty, cyprus is just so much fun and makes you want to dance, and croatia is addicting and has a swagger to it that I love! Looking forward to Malta’s announcement soon, because they were my winner last year.

Great (1 to 3): France, Lithuania, Ukraine (any news about when the final version for this one will be released?)

Good: 4) Finland, 5) Ireland (I may even move this one up, I’m addicted), 6) Czech Republic, 7) Norway

Fine (8 to 13): Albania, Croatia, Cyprus, Israel, Slovenia, Spain

Weak: 14) Germany

Very curious to see what Sanremo and Jeangu will bring to us this week, Italy and The Netherlands have been on my top 10 in the last 2 years.

Jendrik performed his song in a german TV show. The whole performance was too crazy for getting nil points. This could a surprising televtoing magnet because it’s just strange, different, weird but funny. And the dancing peace-sign that plays the trumpet is adorable.

The fact that you don’t like those songs (even tho I’m 100% sure that you’re a biased The Roop’s fanboy) doesn’t make everyone who loves Albina or Elena “too gae to function”. This is our opinion and if you respect it stay here or else stop commenting here and find a blog full of low-minded people like you.

And you know what…? Germany will be more successful with this than these overproduced pop-ballads or swedish-wirtten-pop music. Jendrik has a very positive personality and gives us positive vibes. I think this could be a top 15 contender. Now it seems unlikely but the reactions are very polarizing. Some people love this to death.

Here is my take on this:

Crown chasers: Lithuania, France, Finland. I cannot see any other song among the 14 to have any chance of winning.

Solid mid-table finisher: Spain
Definite Flop: Germany

All others will fight to qualify, depending on vocal performance + staging.

To be fair, I’ve never been a fan of male singers anyway. Like in general. I prefer my Celines, Whitneys and Mariahs. But it helps when males are eye candies. Makes up for some deficiencies in the voice area.

The only male singer I really adore is Adam Lambert. He’s a masterful vocalist.
