Francesca Michielin & Fedez

They performed the track for the first time during the opening night of Italy’s Sanremo 2021. And, for many, Francesca Michielin & Fedez have delivered on the pre-festival buzz with “Chiamami per nome”. But what do the lyrics mean and what is the song about?

Sanremo 2021: Francesca Michielin & Fedez “Chiamami per nome”

In the months and weeks leading up to Sanremo 2021, much of the focus has been on Francesca & Fedez. They were the early bookies’ favourites and at one point faced a disqualification scare when a short snippet of their song was shared online. But their reputation isn’t all built on hype — they have the pedigree to go with it.

Francesca, of course, represented Italy at Eurovision 2016 with “No Degree Of Separation”. She got to go despite finishing second at Sanremo. That’s because winners Stadio turned down the gig. Since then she’s gone on to have plenty of hits, including “Cigno nero” and “Magnifico” with Fedez. The superstar rapper is married to the well-known influencer Chiara Ferragni and will be making his festival debut.

What do the “Chiamami per nome” lyrics mean?

Francesca Michielin and Fedez, the duo that gave us “Magnifico”, reconfirms its flair in “Chiamami per nome” (Call Me By My Name), a song full of romantic and film-like images. Here, however, Fedez doesn’t just rap against Francesca’s melody. He also accompanies her by singing himself.

“Living a dream brings good luck,” sings Francesca. “Your kisses are stones on shop windows”, he replies. One rhyme, however, will immediately remain in her memory: “There were a thousand promises, but in my heart I feel pins”. The message? When you really find each other, words (and promises) lose their meaning.

“Chiamami per nome” lyrics — Francesca Michielin & Fedez (Sanremo 2021)

Written and Composed by: Federico “Fedez” Lucia, Francesca Michielin, Jacopo Matteo Luca “Dargen” D’Amico, Davide Simonetta, Alessandro Raina and Mahmood.

Italian text

English translation

Prova a toglierle tu baby
Tu baby

Perché in fondo qui sull’erba siamo mille, mille

Poi versiamo lacrime
Per poterlo ricolmare

Le promesse erano mille mille
Ma nel cuore sento spille spille
Prova a toglierle tu baby tu baby

Chiamami per nome
Solo quando avrò
Perso le parole

So che in fondo ti ho stupito venendo qui da solo
Guidando al buio, piango come uno scemo

Chiamami per nome
Perché in fondo qui sull’erba siamo mille mille

Rinunceremo all’oro
Scambiandolo per pane

Chiamami per nome
Solo quando avrò
Perso le parole

So che in fondo

Perché in fondo qui sull’erba siamo mille, mille
Sento tutto sulla pelle, pelle
Ma vedo solo te baby
Te baby

Le promesse sono mille mille
Ma non serve siano mille
Ora che ho solo te baby
Te baby

Today I’m wearing a shirt that doesn’t suit me
I run in the park in my area
But I would like to tell you I am not afraid
Living a dream brings good luck

Your anger doesn’t win
Some beginnings don’t even deserve an end
But your mouth convinces me
One kiss at a time

Like stones against shop windows
My excuses were a thousand, thousand
And in my heart I feel pins, pins
Try to take them off you baby
You baby

Call me by my name
Only when I’ve
Lost my words

I know I amazed you by coming here alone
Standing there with a lump in my throat

Call me by my name
Because here on the grass we are a thousand, a thousand
I feel everything on my skin, skin
But all I see is you baby
You baby

In the lift I waste a sign of the cross, so what?
I know how to be capable of the worst, don’t give me advice
I’m looking for a poison that’ll never get me down

I got a sadistic guardian angel
I find an excuse but what will it change?

The great trivial story
First we drain the sea
Then we shed tears
In order to fill it up

There were a thousand promises, a thousand
But in my heart I feel pins, pins
Try to take them off you baby you baby

Call me by my name
Only when I’ve
Lost my words

I know I amazed you by coming here alone
Driving in the dark, I cry like a fool

Call me by my name
Because here on the grass we are a thousand thousand
I feel everything on my skin, skin
But all I see is you baby
You baby

I feel like I’m dying when you talk about me in a way that I hate
Help me understand if in the end you only see the good in me

Under this storm
It’s raining on the cathedral
We will give up gold
Trading it for bread

Call me by my name
Only when I’ve
Lost my words

I know that after all
It amazed us to end up here alone in this place
But if you don’t find me

Call me by my name
Becaus here on the grass we are a thousand, a thousand
I feel everything on my skin, skin
But all I see is you baby
You baby

Promises are a thousand, a thousand
But it don’t need to be a thousand
Now that I only have you baby
You baby

I get the feeling that the English translation doesn’t quite capture the meaning and subtext of the song. Perhaps the songwriters can explain what it’s about. I love it though.
