She’s the Junior Eurovision 2015 champion who is set to represent her country on the international stage once again at Eurovision 2021. But before Destiny unveils her entry for this year’s contest, she’s taken time to feature on “Mistake”, the latest single from Maltese band Red Electrick.

The song was originally included as a solo track on Red Electrick’s 2019 album Tragic Optimistic. This new version adds in Destiny’s soulful vocals for extra impact.

“Mistake” is an indie-rock song that mixes guitar and drum instrumentation with some elements of electronic production. Destiny enters the song from the second verse onward and shows that her stellar voice can work with a variety of genres.

Red Electrick (feat. Destiny) – “Mistake”

In the lyrics, Destiny and Red Electrick discuss how they’re moving on from a failed relationship. They declare that they’re done with waiting for the other person to be there for them. Instead, they’re going on to better things:

Moving on
I’m changing my ways
I need to be strong
Even though we get along
So good
You were my mistake

The music video for the song features Red Electrick and Destiny singing in an underground garage.

They’re joined by dance troupe Concept of Movement, who were finalists in the debut season of Malta’s Got Talent. Donning netted head coverings, the group perform various movements whilst surrounding Destiny and Red Electrick.

Speaking exclusively to wiwibloggs, Destiny talked about the experience of working with Red Electrick:

It was an amazing experience. They are great to work with and they work hard to achieve. We worked so well together. We got into the studio, laughed together, practiced, also got to know one another and that is when the magic happened. I’m grateful I had the opportunity to work with such incredible artists which I can call friends.

Is “Mistake” Destiny’s Eurovision 2021 song?

Short answer, no.

Since the song was originally released in 2019 by Red Electrick, “Mistake” would not be eligible for Destiny to perform at Eurovision 2021. It is also longer than the permitted three minutes that a Eurovision song is allowed to be.

Destiny Chukunyere originally won the Maltese ticket to Eurovision 2020 after winning the second series of X Factor Malta. She was set to represent Malta with the soul song “All of My Love” before Eurovision 2020 was cancelled. Destiny was then internally selected to return to Eurovision 2021.

In October, broadcaster TVM launched submissions to find Destiny’s song for Rotterdam. The result of this internal selection will be revealed at some point later in March.

Lyrics: “Mistake” – Red Electrick (feat. Destiny)

[Verse 1] On my own
So done with waiting
For you to come home
Been so long
And I’m feeling faded

[Pre-Chorus] Weren’t you the one who’s meant to save me?
When everything I had was going wrong
You’ll never be the one to change me
Not in this life

[Chorus] Moving on
I’m changing my ways
I need to be strong
Even though we get along
So good
You were my mistake

[Verse 2] Just one hit’s all it takes and were gone
Yeah I’m gone
It’s all in the air that I breathe through these lungs
I come undone

[Pre-Chorus] [Chorus x3]

You were my mistake
You were my mistake

Red Electrick seems like a really cool Maltese band and I especially love the vocalist. He has such a nice voice! I hope TVM would consider them for 2022.
