She’s been on a long creative journey but now Montaigne is ready to share her Eurovision song. Australia‘s singer for Eurovision 2021 confirmed that her song for Rotterdam will be released this Friday, 5 March. She’s also revealed a few hints about the song.

Montaigne shared the good news with a post on Instagram, simply writing: “little Eurovision song coming out on Friday…”

While Montaigne didn’t reveal anything else about the song with today’s announcement, she has been dropping a few clues in recent days.

Montaigne’s Eurovision song is inspired by hyperpop

Yesterday Montaigne uploaded the first of what she says will be many vlogs. In the video, she talked about what she’s been up to, including a bit about her Eurovision songwriting process.

Montaigne confirmed that her song for Rotterdam has been written with the Australian songwriter and producer Dave Hammer. He’s known for his work with Australian artists such as Lime Cordiale, Genesis Owusu, Thundamentals and Mia Rodriguez.

Dave and Montaigne have been busy writing for the past six months. Montaigne spoke highly of him, saying, “We get along immensely well. It’s really easy to work with him.”

Montaigne also revealed a bit about the style of the song. Her song for Rotterdam will be “really inspired by hyperpop”. The genre is known for mixing pop, electronics and hip hop styles, creating a maximalist sound. The UK singer Charlie XCX is perhaps the best known hyperpop creative.

Montaigne gives fans a preview

And even earlier in the week, Montaigne may have given fans their first taste of her Eurovision song.

The preview came in the form of a short Instagram video, showing Montaigne wearing a mesh hooded bodysuit and looking glam in avant-garde makeup. In an earlier post, Montaigne confirmed this look was for her Eurovision single cover art.

The soundtrack of the clip was a short piece of music, featuring an acoustic guitar, some angelic glockenspiel, with Montaigne singing “oooh” over the top. It’s appears to be a different sound to Montaigne’s 2020 song “Don’t Break Me”.

There’s also speculation that the song will be titled “Technicolour” — or will at least feature that in its lyrics.

Montaigne was internally selected by broadcaster SBS after previously winning the 2020 national final. She will represent Australia in the first semi-final of Eurovision 2021 on May 18.

What do you think? Are you excited to hear Montaigne’s song for Rotterdam? What sort of performance do you think she will bring? Sound off in the comments below!

Just heard it on radio here in Australia and I must say I was impressed. I was beginning to doubt Montaigne this year but she has come through with a very original and interesting song that should be better received than 2020.

i like both don’t break me and this snippet a lot but last year i think she staged her song so awkwardly and the whole performance just made me cringe… i think i’m going to like this song a lot but i want to see her really embody her song on stage rather than be a dancing clown again because that killed the whole vibe of don’t break me last year

I’m definitely excited. This’ll be the first year where I’m familiar with multiple artists prior to their being selected (Montaigne and Hooverphonic – technically this also would’ve been true last year, but, well…) and I’m pumped for both of them

Sounds exciting!
Don’t Break Me wasn’t my favourite from Australia Decides last year, but I trust it only scratches the surface of her talent and potential- hopefully it’ll be something unusual for Eurovision, in the bet possible way! Certainly not bland or identical.

On a another note, can she go to Rotterdam? Or is it too early to say?

Don’t bring me was a fine son, it was just a national finals stating that looked questionable. It probably would’ve changed how the con test not been canceled, but I am intrigued to see what her follow up song will be.

Unlikely to happen. If they release the song in May 22, it means no promotion could be made before the contest. Not very wise…

There are rumours Athena went to Armenia to film the music video in recent days and that’s why she wasn’t active on Instagram recently. Before several days she reposted Instagram story of some Eurovision page where it’s claimed Athena is back and she is in Armenia filming her music video, so she’s probably back. 🙂

i really want to believe that 🙁 if she goes to eurovision or not , i will never love that channel and delegation members ! they are so disrespectful , they have no right to do that to us , to the audience. Thousands of people wait for months and they didn’t say a word. So lazy and rude.. Also same for Polish channel

Countries have done this every time. Think San Marino 2017, Russia 2017, Azerbaijan 2019. Stop thinking ur entitled to know a countries plans for Eurovision.

i didn’t claim i am entitled to know their plans? i’m just a viewer and i have requests as normal. we (fans) try to talk them for months but they don’t care about us and that is annoying

How would that make sense if the deadline for submission and at least the artist is mid March?

that May thing was a joke but deadline is a problem lately… I think the deadline is like 13th March or something like that. But still many countries didn’t say their song dates and we have only 1,5 week left… Weird

I really hope she can wear the outfit in her Instagram video on the stage. Given that the title’s likely to be «Technicolor», I imagine the bodysuit to be covered in sparkling «jewels» etc. that can change colors on the stage by simply using different colors of light. That’s what I thought Malta should’ve done in 2019

Actually we got to see an (unfinished) concept of what she would’ve done on the eurovision stage and it was very cool.

It’s because the song has been uploaded to the streaming platforms and scheduled for release. It’s definitely the title.

Wow. That’s quite revealing about where technology is taking us as a civilisation.

It makes me wonder how that technology will be applied in the future, like matching any voice to identity details (although some big tech firms can probably do that already, at least within their consumer base).

Hope she ditched the whole clown styling from last year though. (I’m sure she will).
