While Montaigne’s Eurovision 2021 entry isn’t due to be released until tomorrow, she has already given fans a first listen. Montaigne presented her song today on the Australian radio station Triple J. And she also confirmed that she will be able to make it to Rotterdam in May.

“Technicolour” is an upbeat dance-pop song with fun and uplifting lyrics. The song includes a shout-along part where Montaigne asserts, “But I got power, yeah! Midnight is the hour, yeah! Time to take off your clothes cloaks!”

It builds to the song’s chorus, where Montaigne sings “Techni, technicolour, if we stand together, we can do whatever.” And amid the party spirit, the song also lets Montaigne show off her vocals, even with a speorg note moment.

The song has plenty of moments that suggest she’ll be bringing some bold staging to Rotterdam, full of neon colours and lasers. There’s also a key change in the song, but it doesn’t feel like a cliched cheesy “Eurovision key change”.

Montaigne has also uploaded a snippet of the song on her Instagram.

A post shared by montaigne (@actualmontaigne)

Speaking about her song to SBS, Montaigne also said, “I’m so excited to present ‘Technicolour’ to the world! I think it does it all — makes you want to cry, makes you want to dance, makes you want to take on a malignant corporate power — and I think that it is both forward-thinking and suitable for Eurovision.”

Montaigne’s guide to writing the perfect Eurovision song

Montaigne also shared her guidelines for what she believed the perfect Eurovision song should have — and she says these are all elements that “Technicolour” has.

Montaigne says the perfect song should have high drama, “the more camp, the better”, a key change, lots of dynamic shifts and a surprising moment that leads to “shenanigans” on stage.

With the song written, it’s now up to Montaigne and her team to put together the complete package that will be seen on stage in Rotterdam. She said that all the ideas are there, that it’s now just a matter of realising them.

“Technicolour” was written by Montaigne and the Australian songwriter and producer Dave Hammer. He’s known for his work with Australian artists such as Lime Cordiale, Genesis Owusu, Thundamentals and Mia Rodriguez.

Montaigne is “99% sure” she will be in Rotterdam

While a bit of uncertainly remains in the face of the Covid-19 pandemic, Montaigne says she is “99% sure” that the Australian delegation will be able to travel to Rotterdam in May.

She outlined the health and safety guidelines that the EBU recently released, including regular testing. She said she’s have to get vaccinated before leaving and — like all Australians — would have to go into two weeks quarantine upon returning to Australia.

Montaigne’s Eurovision journey

Montaigne originally won her country’s national final Eurovision: Australia Decides in 2020. She was due to represent Australia at Eurovision 2020 with the song “Don’t Break Me”.

After Eurovision 2020 was cancelled, SBS gave Montaigne the return ticket to Rotterdam. Australia’s national final was cancelled for 2021 and Montaigne got to work creating her entry for Eurovision 2021.

Along the way, she shared the creative process with fans. In August. Montaigne revealed she’d written a “totally f****d” song and also teased another creation titled “JC Ultra”. Earlier this year Montaigne revealed she’d been offered a song from the Grammy-award winning songwriter Diane Warren.

But in the end, Montaigne settled on the perfect Eurovision entry herself.

On Saturday, Montaigne will give the first live performance of “Technicolour” at the 2021 Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Parade. The state of New South Wales currently allows outdoor performances with a maximum of 500 attendees, meaning the parade will be a fully seated, socially distanced affair at the Sydney Cricket Ground. The event will be live-streamed internationally on SBS On Demand.

Montaigne’s Eurovision 2021 song “Technicolour” will be officially released Friday, 5 March.

What do you think? Does “Technicolour” sound like a winner? What sort of staging should Montaigne use? Tell us your thoughts below!

I like it much more than their last years entry. Her voice gave a lots of energy to this song. This can grow especially with the live performance. With a right staging which Australia usually have it will easily qualify and make it to top 15

Come on Australia and Montaigne! After last year’s anthem, this one is a disappointment. I believe the 2020 song would have been top-5 but this one is not going to qualify, imo. It’s weird and the chorus is really meh… So sorry for Australia. Montaigne is a good artist. I can also understand artists’ struggles with the pandemic. So, hugs to all artists who push their boundaries during the pandemic!

I agree the verse is good, but the chorus isn’t. It appears to be a shouting match and I wonder how this will appear live. For me, this is disappointing as a song, unforgettable to be honest. Perhaps after a few listens it will grow on you, but as a result of this Australia may not qualify for the final this year. I hope her live performance will change this assumption.

Now it’s dropped on Spotify I can say I like the verses I don’t know about the pre-chorus and the chorus is a bit grating on first listen. It might be better live who knows?

Mmmm… I’m a bit dissapointed. I loved “Don’t Brake Me”but I’m not usre about this one. It has quality for sure and it fresh but the problem for me is the chorus. I like the verses and the prechorus but the chorus is a bit noisy.

I don’t see this qualifying in SF1. Maybe in SF2.

I love the verses, the bridge and the post chorus. Even the pre chorus is fun. Sounds like a Marina song, which is an amazing thing in my book. However I really dislike the instrumentation in the chorus. It feels weird and almost like they are mocking everyone going for the 80s inspired instrumentals. They definitely went overboard.

I understand your point but that’s the whole genre of hyperpop. Overboard, weird, very metallic, sometimes 80s inspired. It’s not overboard, and actually in the genre it’s in it is quite tame.

I prefer this to last year’s song. The 80’s instrumental in the chorus is little in your face but I like the rest of it. Hope the staging is also improved from last year.

They spend just as much money on the contest as the big five and still have to go through the semi finals because they’re Australia so there you go, there’s the punishment they get for not being Europe, now move on and get over it?

Young people, who listen the songs only one time-the night of semi, will like it and they will vote for it!
But for fans of ESC, it’s very eccentric and too much…
However, this song is different from the others, so it’s very memorable!

Preuss

I mean, it’s a pretty good effort once again from Australia, and something completely different from what they’ve been sending. The chorus is very memorable. It has to be done well live, and it does have a lot of staging potential. Now, Australia usually does a great job at staging their entries, but after the hot mess in 2018 where I’m just gonna throw everyone under the bus, I’m terrified of what they might do. 2019 was amazing though and they’ll probably deliver this year. I can see it do quite well

Lol I love how this song seems to divide people, it shows it’s not forgettable 🙂 and it makes me realize hyperpop is not for everybody (because even though it’s a very soft approach to hyperpop people manage to find this irritating… wait until they find out about SOPHIE – rip)

From that 2:30 preview, I am more inclined to her last year’s song because it was much more to my taste. It’s not that bad and will most likely qualify but it’s just irritating to my ear.

@Andi gave me a link to the WeTransfer page of Technicolour. In my opinion, this song is better than DBM, but Idk whether Technicolour is as dance-able as DBM. Australia is usually good at staging and creating performances, so this could be a dark horse. However, if Australia messes up like 2018 (even though Jessica Mauboy qualified) then I’ll question the chance of qualification for Montaigne.
Conclusion: the live version of this song will either make it or break it.

WOW. I love it so much, it’s really my kind of music. The verses especially, they feel really Marina and the diamonds-esque. Love the bridge as well. The pre-chorus is really Grimes indeed. I don’t know how to feel about the chorus though but it’s okay. Huge improvement compared to last year, I mean this is way more original and showcases Montaigne’s uniqueness. This will stand out and can probably score high (top10 in the final?) if the performance is on point 🙂 please no clownery this time
