Ermal Meta

After the meagre first night‘s viewing figures — 8,363,000 viewers and an audience share of 46.6%, the lowest result since 2014 in terms of share — Italian Sanremo 2021 continued on with its Wednesday night show.

The remaining 13 Campioni contestants — the big names from which Italy’s Eurovision 2021 artist will be chosen — performed their entries to the viewers for the very first time, just like yesterday.

At the end of the live show, a complete provisional ranking based on the results of the demoscopic poll was revealed.

The live show — hosted by Amadeus with the support of Rosario Fiorello and singer Elodie — started with the performances of half of the Nuove Proposte, the category dedicated to newcomers, judged by the demoscopic poll (33%), the members of the press centre (33%) and the televote (34%).

And these are the results: Wrongonyou with “Lezioni di volo” and Davide Shorty with “Regina” will go to the semi-final on Friday night, while Greta Zuccoli with “Ogni cosa sa di te” and duo Dellai with “Io sono Luca” have been eliminated.

During the evening we were treated to guest performances from Italian superstar Laura Pausini — who sang “Io sì (Seen),” awarded Best Original Song at the 78th Golden Globes just a few days ago — and operatic pop trio Il Volo, who represented Italy at ESC in 2015. They took the Festival stage to pay homage to legendary composer Ennio Morricone singing “Your love”.

They weren’t the only guests at the Ariston Theatre. Eurovision 1964 winner Gigliola Cinquetti reminded us the beauty of “Non ho l’età (Per amartì)” and “Dio come ti amo”, Fausto Leali (ESC 1989) performed “Mi manchi” and “Ti amo”, while Marcella Bella sang “Senza un briciolo di testa” e “Montagne verdi”.

Achille Lauro came back on stage to present his 2020 summer hit “Bam bam twist” but the most talked about moments of the night were Elodie‘s performances. She served Italian popstar realness with a breathtaking medley of her hits and a mash up of Italian and international evergreens and at the end of a night she offered an emotional rendition of “Mai così” by Mina.

How will the Sanremo winner be picked?

Voting during the five evenings will occur through different combinations of four methods:

  • Public televoting, carried out via landline, mobile phone, the contest’s official mobile app, and online voting.
  • Press jury voting, expressed by accredited journalists that followed the competition from the Roof Hall at the Ariston Theatre.
  • demoscopic poll, composed by 300 music fans who voted from their homes via an electronic voting system managed by global market research and a consulting firm Ipsos.
  • Orchestra voting, resulting from points assigned by musicians and singers of the Sanremo Music Festival Orchestra.

The four voting systems will have a percentage weight so distributed:

  • First and Second Evening: 100% demoscopic poll
  • Third Evening: 100% orchestra voting
  • Fourth Evening: 100% press jury voting
  • Fifth Evening: 100% public televoting

In the final part of the fifth evening, a new rank indicating the first three acts — determined by the percentage of votes obtained in that evening’s vote and those obtained in previous evenings — will be drawn up.

  • Super final: 34% public televoting; 33% press jury voting; 33% demoscopic poll

Started listening to the Sanremo songs today and the one I liked the most was ORA by AIELLO. Then I checked the current results and BOOM… hopes gone 🙁

But I’m really impressed by the songs, really nice (can only say something about the studio versions though)

For me there is only one really good song: Polvere da sparo by Gaudiano. Participant in the Nuove Proposte, but I feel it’s the best song of the entire festival. His song would be great for ESC!

I like Irama and Ermal. Irama should win, Ermal already won and his song is a classic Sanremo ballad, beautiful but we have heard it all before. I hope to see Irama become the Mahmood of Sanremo 2021.

I agree, I love Ermal’s song and is my favorite so far but I would like to see a new face in eurovision like Irama or Annalisa.

I thought the whole point of the demoscopic jury was that no one group would decide the result, it’s representative of everybody…

Really hope Irama makes it to the final without any more surprises. It just is one of those BIG songs that put a tear on your face while the rest of your body is dancing. We don’t get that very often.

the song with more Eurovision potential is AMARE by La Rappresentante Di Lista, pure energy… an Italian “Euphoria” – but Ermal or Annalisa will win. Fedez is the outsider…

I like Ermal, I really do, but I don’t really want him to win with this song. It’s not bad but it’s no “Vietato Morire” and there are so many other options I’d prefer to see at ESC. I’d like to see either Irama or Måneskin there, but I also really liked Fulminacci, La Rappresentante di Lista, Willie Peyote, Gaia and Lo Stato Sociale. I like Francesca+Fedez and Annalisa but I don’t think their entries are as good as they could have been. Annalisa would certainly do decently at ESC though because she’s a great singer with a decent stage… Read more »

I predict that Maneskin will be this year’s Mahmood (result wise).

My top 3 prediction is:

  1. Maneskin
  2. Francesca Michielin & Fedez
  3. Ermal Meta/Annalisa

I loved Ermal. It’s just the way he delivers a song that can transmit emotion in any language. If I were picking strictly for Eurovision it would probably be Irama first (provided they can keep the instrumentation at the end when they cut the song) followed by Ermal and then Maneskin which was just cool

Slight Edit: after another few listens I would put Voce by Madame up there too maybe above Maneskin

After 2 evenings my personal favorites are Francesca/Fedez and Irama. Demoscopic Jury is such a mess so I hope everything will change in favor of these performes in following evenings. It is hard for me to understand how Ermal is first with all of my respect.

P.S. True queen of the evening was Elodie. Her mash up was fantastic, especially Soldi’s interpretation. Good Job. It would be better if RAI independently choose her to represent Italy on Eurvovision. She is gorgeous.

Totally agree with you though Ermal’s song is not a good choice for eurovision, it’s one of the best songs to win Sanremo. Totally agree with the Elodie thing too. I’m still listening to Andromeda

Måneskin, clearly the right choice!
I’d say they’re ahead of everyone else by miles. But we all know they won’t win Sanremo and go to Eurovision. 15th place overall so far and 7th place during the first night??? Really??
I knew they’d probably score a bit lower but 7th??

None of the songs are instant apart from Annalisa and Irama, which is a shame. But many of these songs have potential to be massive growers – Irama’s song in particular which has a really interesting composition. Arisa and Noemi don’t have as strong songs this time round which is a shame as I always love their entries, but this may change with a few more listens. I hope Ermal Meta doesn’t win again, his song is good but it feels like it’s already been done before and there are more interesting songs to choose from. I may be alone… Read more »

I hope the final order changes a bit with following votings because there are a few names in there that I just do not get? Lo Stato Sociale and Francesco Renga above Madame or Maneskin is something that baffles me. I am not saying they are bad (Renga’s song is a choice though) but there are better ones in lower positions in my opinion ._.

So in conclusion Italy you have to make the choice between the uptempo summer hit of Irama and the classic timeless Italian ballads of Ermal or Annalisa, it’s a choice but in any cases you will be well represented.

The first couple night results dont really show anything. I dont think mahmood even finished in the top 15 on the first night.

We all know fedez and francesca are going to win the televote comfortably, so its just going to come down to where the press jury places them in reference to the other big hitters.

Considering it’s a creative effect for a specific moment of the song and not a way to mask the singer’s vocals, I don’t think they would have a problem getting approval from EBU.

Autotune is completely forbidden in Eurovision… Maybe he can use that effect for one sentence maximum, but this is too much.

There is an allowance of pre recorded backing vocals this year so no reason he can’t put that into the backing vocals and get away with it

Good question, I don’t know if you are allowed to transform your voice in esc……but in the worst case he could use the pre recorded backing vocals for the chorus and parts with autotune in his song and it would work I think.
And it was maybe not the same situation but Jowst from Norway in 2017 was allowed to pre record autotune voices for his performance.

Ermal Meta and Irama were clear stand out acts, I hope to see them both in the superfinal on Saturday. Irama would be a good choice for Eurovision. Ermal too of course, but I’m thinking he already had his moment and it was a big success with the televote. This is a weak year for Sanremo festival from what I have been able to glean, but there are a few alright songs in the bunch so Italy should be able to keep the tradition of sending quality entries to the European contest. Good luck Italians 🙂 thank you for the… Read more »

My highlights tonight were Ermal, Irama and La Rappresentante di Lista. Ermal’s song is beautiful and builds up to one of those chorus we can only find in Sanremo. I imagine it’s also a grower like Gabbani’s entry from the last year. Irama’s song is as alive and colorful as its title suggests. Not the kind of song people would normally picture winning Sanremo (plus the autotune works better in the studio version than in the live performance), but one that could do very well in Eurovision. And he has momentum, he had a BIG hit last summer. With so… Read more »

I just listened to the studio version of “Amare” and I love it even more now! It’s a song that checks all the boxes for me. And it’s not easy to do it both with Sanremo and Eurovision standards. The televote fight is probably already too busy for them (if we count Francesca & Fedez, Annalisa and Maneskin, there’s already few space for other big names to succeed with it), but I hope at least Sala Stampa give it the love they deserve.

I checked and back on Mahmood’s year, they had also an experts jury pushing him along with the press. His numbers with the televote also grew during the week. Though that year had less artists with an avid younger fanbase. There were basically Ultimo (which I remember was pre-contest big favorite and got really pissed after losing it), Il Volo and Irama (who wasn’t as famous as he’s now). Plus Loredana in the beloved veteran corner of the fight. I feel this year the televote and the demoscopic jury will carry at least 2 very popular acts to the fina… Read more »

My instinct, because Irama song is the more esc friendly of San Remo 2021 in my opinion, but Ermal and his beautiful voice could be good too. The thing is could they be potential esc winners, honestly I don’t know, I hadn’t esc winners vibes in this San Remo me personally like I had already twice this year for others countries, but one thing is sure, as it is Italy (like Sweden) a place in the top 10 is already assured without even competing 😉 I’m joking it’s because they often bring quality songs, however some others countries bring quality… Read more »

Your literally saying esc friendly to the country which has sent everything to eurovision and still done well. There is no such thing as esc friendly to rai and they will be more than happy to put their faith into who wins sanremo if they choose to go to eurovision.

My prediction, top 3 of San Remo 2021, winner Ermal Meta, 2nd Irama, 3rd Annalisa. Ermal will say ok I’ve already been on the esc stage so I let my place to the youth, and Irama will go to eurovision, with Irama’s song I think Italy has something for eurovision, it’s modern, with summerish vibes, uptempo, a charismatic and good performer, the eurofans will love it forcefully moreover it’s Italy 😉 ,this robotic autotune chorus is interesting, it makes the song modern and special and original but being not a fan of autotune myself I already know it will be… Read more »

Well this was a lot better tonight, maybe as I was expecting long interval acts between each competitor. Was going very fast and nicely until midway when the OAP karaoke began for at least 20 minutes! Great to see so much of Elodie, her left ear is definitely cursed though haha! Was some good songs in this night, for me the best were the two last performers Gio and Imara, although the voda may have kicked in by then.
