Get ready for a sweet indulgence: Moldova’s Eurovision 2021 singer Natalia Gordienko has released her entry “Sugar”.
The club-ready, radio-friendly track is about a woman being taken over by desire, all told through the metaphor of craving some sweet-tasting, soluble carbohydrates.
“I can’t explain it, but there’s something going on — a crazy energy inside of me,” she sings. “First just a tingle, then it turned into a burn, like fire in my blood.”
As the song progresses Natalia can hear her body “talk, talk, talk,” and it’s telling her that “a taste” is all she needs. Before you know it she’s “about to climb the wall” because she cannot be alone tonight.
We’ve all acted a little out of character during a low-blood-sugar-moment, but damn!
Moldova’s Natalia Gordienko reveals “Sugar” music video
Sugar comes in many forms — granulated, powdered, refined. But in this video it’s clear that the character Natalia likes it raw. This video isn’t just sensual, it’s flat out sexual with Natalia striking provocative poses in a baby blue brazier. She dips, she drops, she squats and she lays flat on her side. She is a temptress who wants her candy!
She embodies these edibles rather well. Beyond her sugar-coated lips, at time she seems to wear pink cotton candy on her head. It seems that her sweet splendour has the boys coming to the yard. Four backing dancers in bright pink suits with no shirts bend to her every whim. They are in a trance — it’s not a K-hole, but a donut-hole. At one point the camera literally zooms through it.
The structure of the song is generally linear. But then comes the bridge and a very powerful ending where Natalia hits an it note. Given the story of the video, this is essentially the musical climax — and it’s well worth the wait. Our girl also gets what she wanted: She literally rips off a dude’s mouth to reveal a rainbow-coloured slice of yum. Don’t mind the calories, just enjoy!
Ultimately this song is all about, uhm, release. As her team states: “This video promises to immerse the viewer in a sweet atmosphere of love and joy! That’s what we’ve been missing so much lately. And in general, love is never enough! The sexual candy store is right about that!”
What do you think of Natalia’s Eurovision 2021 entry and music video? Is it giving you MARUV vibes with all those horns? Do you think this can climb to the Top 10? Let us know in the comments box down below.
Thank you Natalia
We need some Sugar…
This is what we need right now, camp, catchy and fabulous, and slightly sinister at the same time, what’s not to like? It’s ripe for a big production, I love the section with the ice cream cones, Natalia really looks to be game for a laugh, even if she is a predator. A wonderful confection, my favourite so far!
Ummmm I the musical value of this entry is lacking for me personally
Best so far
I cannot win. It is extremely shallow. Even for Eurovision. And no sense of humor.
I don´t like it at all – only Cyprus is worse in my list.
If she wears that costume in the show, she will be a serious contender for the Barbara Dex Award.
Jeangu is happy to hear that!
I feel lucky for the people who didn’t watch the reveal and just listened to the song. Because having to listen to some Bulgarian speaking in Russian for a hour and a half was pain… Song’s ok I guess
Didn’t understand majority of it, but it was a pain. I that it was a reveal party not a poor imitation of a TED talk.
Too much sugar for my taste.
You know what would be absolutely great? A staging like the last supper of Jesus. Absolute winner. So epic .
How would that work? Hmm…
I love songs with traditional vibes but that does not mean countries should always send the same genre. It’s a contemporary song content, I believe countries should experiment.
Nice song, Moldova! I am not into this kind of glittery music but this is a happy catchy song for Eurovision. It has a staging potential. If she can also perform well, this song will go through to the final.
Natalia Gordienko is extremely talented artist, but this song and music video do no justice for her.
If you compare this to Maruv… Ok. Maruv is provocative and stylish. This is vulgar and tasteless.
What moldovan people should send? They are super fun and I’m sure they love the song.
the song sounds quite cheap and outdated but i’m sure the live performance will save it as per usual with moldova
Oh, stop! You will like it if you are true to yourself.
It looks like the choreographers got heavy inspiration from K-pop artists like Blackpink
Is it bad? What are you trying to say? Or are you just a useless reference recognizing machine?
Song: Maruv
Clip: Little Big
Hotel:Trivago
I have a feeling this will be one of those times where Moldova outshines Romania on the scoreboard. I’m not even mad 😀
It’s a bop, it will do well. Good choice Moldova. Europe will get up and dance.
L o v e t h i s
This is even better for me compared to Belgium, Norway, Romania, the Netherlands and Australia. There was so much talk about the first semi-final which is strong as they said… if there is justice both Norway and Australia and Belgium will stay out of the semi-final. My opinion.
I agree. She will qualify for sure. And it is radio friendly.
I’m sorry Cyprus, but THIS is what I call sultry and seductive. <3 I love it.
Two very different dance songs in my opinion.
Yeah, you’re right, but both are female singer with a dance song with provocative lyrics. And imo of the two Sugar is sexier song (definitely more sexy than Replay, but less than Fuego).
I love Tori Amos reinventing herself.
What an insult for Tori Amos, sorry about that.
Yeah, my god. Can’t tell if you’re complimenting Natalia or insulting Tori Amos or both.
I’m a Tori Amos fan, so…
I’m romanian and being fair, my thoughts are: both Romania and Moldova are way better this year. Reading the comments, it seems many fans are suddenly in love with Prison. Where were you last year? And about Romania, I know you liked Alcohol You, but Amnesia is more catchy. I agree with every word of FrenchBaguette from youtube, about Amnesia.
Romania’s entry is hard to remember
Of course I respect your opinion, but I disagree. We both will see what May brings, and how Europe and Australia will vote.
Why would you need to remember the song? To perform it yourself? What about structureless/rhythmless ambient, jazz, classical or even noise music? Are you in desperate need to remember it too? For me it’s more important when I want to come back to the song and listen it again, each time noticing something new in it and myself. It’s better than remembering a catchy earworm that has no impact on you whatsoever.
My favourite song so far!
Congrats to Natalia and all those involved; I really enjoy this entry. William is right that the music has the vibe of MARUV’s “Bang”. I must admit that after I heard “hear your body talk” my rather long memory went all the way back to the 1981 hit “Physical” by Olivia Newton-John (who coincidentally is also a Eurovision alumnus from 1974! But I digress). There are also some small musical cues from “Physical” in Natalia’s “Sugar,” which act as nice little sweeteners. But ignoring the music for a moment, this entry gets top marks for choreography, for being able to… Read more »
This comment doesn’t deserve four dislikes. There is literally nothing negative in it. What’s the problem?
Gave you a like to balance it out x)
I’d call it more like three yeses and a no
I don’t know about this… but when I watched the music video, I get Asian pop (K-pop or J-pop) vibes just by looking at the colors… something that is a mix between cute and badass. I can relate to the song as a K-pop fan.
Better than “Prison” last year, and just as good.
Moldova is really the master of fun and flashy entries in Eurovision, as we see in 2005, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2015, 2017, and 2018.
Hopefully Natalia has a big chance of qualifying to the final!
There’s definitely a hint of Maruv’s Bang to this without any of it’s earworm qualities…I just don’t even pick up the chorus…I still can’t see a world where this, Serbia and Greece all qualify from the first half of Semi 2…one of them is bound to falter
I love how she has exactly the amount of dancers allowed on stage so give us more of and idea of what the choreography is like. I for one love this, I’m not for videos like this but I find it very strange in a good way. But this may be difficult to sway over the jury I feel. But staging will convince them! I have faith Natalia! Xx
Not bad at all
It’s OK, nothing more. A bit repetitive at times but with Moldova’s knack for creating fun staging this could squeeze through to final.
In other, much better news. Montaigne’s Technicolour is now “out there” it’s amazing and nice to see a returning artist take some real risks and not merely replicate their 2020 output.
I’m all about this. This is is a qualifier and much better than last year. Well done Moldova.
All those who declare this entry as cheap and trash, beware to take your words back once you see the staging. It’s the team behind Doredos and Sergey. They will bring it.
It’s a song contest not a staging one.
it’s literally both.. the staging can make or break any act
Try telling that to Mans Zelmerlow
I don ‘t like “Sugar” so much. I liked “Prison” more last year.
Wonder where all this musical taste in the comment section was when the Cypriot song came out? This should be quite interesting on the stage and it stands out.
I’m not sure how she sounds live, but this should be very easy to stage. Moldova might just make it this year
Off-topic — but I’m really surprised Purple Mask hasn’t posted for about a week now. Purple, I hope you’re ok!!
Yeah, come back, Purple! We miss ya!
This week has been so busy that no wonder, seems like there’s something new for every day!
To me, that makes it even more surprising not to see Purple here…because they always love to post their thoughts on the new releases.
Some people have lives, you know. I for example don’t. 😛
But on a serious note. I hope they’re okay too.
No time for Eurovision…what kind of life is that, Benny? What kind of life at all… 😛
I know. Once May is over I can’t wait for September and first glimpses of what we may expect. Some people treat ESC as a one night competition, some as a kitsch festival. I treat it as a chance for at least 40 new songs that I can add to my playlist. And if you take NF into account, there’s plenty more. And I love it.
Your humor remind me of his, by the way.
I’ve been actually thinking of changing my name again. Just trying to pick something that represents me. 😛
…again? …Purple?!
Gosh! Thank you for your concern. I am genuinely moved. 🙂
Everyone goes through tough times sometimes; mine aren’t any more important than other people’s. I don’t really know what else to say – I will try to post when I can x
Glad to see you back and that you’re ok 🙂
Welcome back dude!
I feel like I shouldn’t like this, but I bloody love it!
After a number of listens this is firmly my number 1. Love it
Now I wonder…are you Jude Kennedy, irishfan??
Nope.
How the hell are they gonna stage it? I am really curious, I cannot imagine it on stage. It is somewhat forgettable, I can only remember the word “sugar” and something of the rhythm. It is a poor man’s “Siren Song”. I think that I even like Prison more, it was a guilty pleasure for me after all
This means that today we had 2 great songs (imo), Romania & Belgium, and 2 average (or below average) songs from Moldova & the Netherlands
Now, now, now, let’s not get carried away. It’s clearly a poor man’s “Shady Lady.”
How privileged that you can joke about that.
Could be, yes
I feel like Armie Hammer would love the end of this video…
Only if it wasn’t actually cake…
TOP 5 for me
1.Cyprus
2.France
3.Lithuania
4.Croatia
5.Norway
last 3
17.Germany
18.Spain
19.Albania
i don’t see this being worse than croatia or cyprus. i actually think will outscore them.
lots of fun … they always put so much effort into their entry. This has like a hint of Maruv’s withdrawn entry from Tel Aviv in the production but obviously its not dark

France first! you got taste
Almost exactly my top five except it appears we disagree about Belgium. Our top four are the same at least, just a slightly different order (I have Lithuania first and France second).
for me
Ah I think I need a little time to like Belgium’s song. I liked it until the end of the first chorus and then it fell flat and became repetitive. Also I cannot for the life of me get behind the ‘Johnny Cash T-shirt’ line haha. I feel I should love it but it’s just a little blah to me personally
See, I liked that line. It made me think of Ben Folds Fives’ “Song for the Dumped” (“And don’t forget to give me back my black T-shirt!”)
Guilty pleasure incoming!
Just a fun entry to enjoy, but wouldn’t be super sad about it if it stays in the semi. Would be a great opener for semi 2 though!
strange that the top comments for the netherlands are almost all positive, and the top comments for moldova’s are almost all negative. something seems fishy.
I’d be happy if the top comments for both were positive! Always happier seeing people enjoy songs than not. I don’t take any joy in disliking an entry.
Maybe William should add an option to order comments by most downvoted.
This is really good. I would love some of Natalia’s sugar ngl
