Estonia in Eurovision 2021: Uku Suviste “The Lucky One”

“The Lucky One” is co-written by Uku Suviste alongside pop music veteran Sharon Vaughan. This marks Uku’s third Eesti Laul entry, following his victory last year with “What Love Is” and a second-place finish with “Pretty Little Liar” in 2019. By winning Eesti Laul 2020, Uku earned the right to represent Estonia at Eurovision 2020 — but never got the chance to sing on the Rotterdam stage following the contest’s cancellation. Shortly after the cancellation news broke, Estonian broadcaster ERR offered Uku Suviste a guaranteed spot in the Eesti Laul semi-finals, should he wish to return. Lo and behold, he came back with an anthem. He’s the first artist to win Eesti Laul twice since the competition began in 2009. And he’s did it back-to-back!

What do the “The Lucky One” lyrics mean?

Uku Suviste’s Eurovision 2021 effort bid is a pop-rock entry with a greater anthemic feel to his previous entries. “The Lucky One” is about noticing the red flags when a relationship is turning sour.

“Basically, this song uses the metaphor of love as a game of chance”, songwriter Sharon Vaughan tells wiwibloggs. “The singer and his lover start out as the lucky ones and then luck changes on them and leaves them cold. The song is about being able to read the signs… to see what is coming. They were the lucky ones.”

Our Natalie gives her interpretation of the lyrics: It’s a post-break-up song with a positive message. It details the relief of being let go by a partner who hasn’t respected you for who you are. Uku makes it clear that he feels his partner was responsible for the ending “Why’d you have to make what was unbreakable shakable, unsavable?” and displays sadness about it “Hate it, but it seems the dreams were never true”.

But, in the end, he sees that the pain might also be a blessing in disguise “I can see, this time it isn’t me, I might be the lucky one”. He continues this theme in the chorus “When it comes to you, I’m better off alone”. He also thinks about how much pain had been avoided by the love ending. “I don’t need a crystal ball to make me realise that if I stay you’ll break me”.

He also blames himself for the relationship going on longer than it should, “It had to be my fault that it kept raining down, until now, I figured out”. And he looks to his future with hope “That if I had the nerve to say goodbye, I could look for clearer skies up overhead”. It’s a common message, but an effective one. Sometimes the darkest times of our lives can also be the most important.

“The Lucky One” lyrics – Uku Suviste (Estonia ESC 2021)

Wonder if it ever crossed your mind
That what we had was really unbelievable
Unbeatable, a miracle
Why’d you have to go and mess it up
Why’d you have to make what was unbreakable
Shakable, unsaveable

And now it’s too late to cross your fingers
I’m wide awake and not a dreamer
Hate it but it seems the dreams were never true
For a little while the fates were with us
Wonder why they had to turn against us
I could make a wish, but there is no use

I can feel
Even though I’m numb
The change to come will hurt someone
I can see
This time it isn’t me
I might be the lucky one

I don’t need a crystal ball to show me
Baby it’s plain that you don’t know me
When it comes to you I’m better off alone (better off alone)
I don’t need a crystal ball to make me
Realise that if I stay you’ll break me
Every sign is saying I should be gone
I should be gone

Thought I had a cloud over my head
It had to be my fault that it kept raining down
Until now I figured out
That if I had the nerve to say goodbye
I could look for clearer skies up over head
Weather says sun instead

I don’t need a crystal ball to show me
Baby it’s plain that you don’t know me
When it comes to you I’m better off alone (better off alone)
I don’t need a crystal ball to make me
Realise that if I stay you’ll break me
Every sign is saying I should be gone
I should be gone

I can feel (even though I’m numb)
The change to come will hurt someone
I can see (I can feel)
This time it isn’t me
I might be the lucky one

I don’t need a crystal ball to show me
Baby it’s plain that you don’t know me
When it comes to you I’m better off alone (better off alone)
I don’t need a crystal ball to make me
Realise that if I stay you’ll break me
Every sign is saying I should be gone
I should be gone

I’m between this and Koit for Eesti Laul. However, I really don’t get the hate? Clear left side of the board for me and I’ve even got a 5er at 100-1 to win the whole thing!
Go get em!!!

Most of Eesti Laul’s good songs were already eliminated. This is the best they have left

You were actually incorrect that Uku could be the first Estonian artist to win eesti laui back to back. They’re having fact been two other artists who have participated for Estonia twice— Maarja-Liis Ilus and Koit Toome. Maarja-Liis Ilus Is in fact the first Estonian artist To win eesti maul back to back, and if Koit wins, he will be the first three time winner. Uku might be the first male singer to win back to back on Saturday, But not the first singer overall.

Ashton, is there actually any song which you think WILL qualify and/or not finish in last place? It seems you think it’s a race to the bottom!
