Colapesce Dimartino

It’s the fourth night of the long-lasting Sanremo Music Festival. The third live episode collected over 7,653,000 million viewers and an audience share of 44.3% — and the competition is really getting going.

Friday’s show was hosted by Amadeus with the support of Rosario Fiorello, journalist Barbara Palombelli and conductor Beatrice Venezi.

Tonight the 26 contestants — the names from which Italy’s Eurovision 2021 artist will be chosen — performed their entries to the viewers for the second time. The performances were this time judged by accredited journalists, who voted for their favourites from the press room.

The fourth evening was also dedicated to the finals of the Newcomers category. If your favourite is among those singers, you’ll be disappointed since the next Italian Eurovision representative is going to be chosen only among the Campioni names.

29-year-old Gaudiano with “Polvere da sparo” slayed the competitors and won the coveted trophy. X Factor Italy 9 finalist Davide Shorty finished second singing “Regina“.

Third place for Folcast with “Scopriti“, while Wrongonyou placed fourth with “Lezioni di volo“. He has also been awarded with the Critic’s Prize.

We wish each of them a shining career and who knows — maybe we’ll see one of them in the top category in 2022.

Eurovision made its way to the stage via the evening’s guest perfomers who caught viewers’ attention. Sanremo 2019 winner Mahmood returned to the Ariston Theatre to present a medley of his hits “Rapide”, “Inuyasha”, “Barrio”, “Calipso”, “Dorado” and the unforgettable “Soldi”.

Emma Marrone (ESC 2014) made another appearance after that of last night to duet with Alessandra Amoroso on the notes of their recent collaboration “Pezzo di cuore”.

In the middle of the evening, Achille Lauro sang “Rolls Royce” and “Me ne frego”, his two Sanremo entries.

How will the Sanremo winner be picked?

Voting during the five evenings will occur through different combinations of four methods:

  • Public televoting, carried out via landline, mobile phone, the contest’s official mobile app, and online voting.
  • Press jury voting, expressed by accredited journalists that followed the competition from the Roof Hall at the Ariston Theatre.
  • demoscopic poll, composed by 300 music fans who voted from their homes via an electronic voting system managed by global market research and a consulting firm Ipsos.
  • Orchestra voting, resulting from points assigned by musicians and singers of the Sanremo Music Festival Orchestra.

The four voting systems will have a percentage weight so distributed:

  • First and Second Evening: 100% demoscopic poll
  • Third Evening: 100% orchestra voting
  • Fourth Evening: 100% press jury voting
  • Fifth Evening: 100% public televoting

In the final part of the fifth evening, a new rank indicating the first three acts — determined by the percentage of votes obtained in this evening’s vote and those obtained in previous evenings — will be drawn up.

  • Superfinal: 34% public televoting; 33% press jury voting; 33% demoscopic poll

I think, by reading the comments, that a lot of people are omessing that there is top 3 and Top 3: the results can be 1. 50% 2. 30% and 3. 20 % like first with 35%, second with 33 and thrid with 32. Besides, being the first for the demoscopic jury and televote doesn’t mean victory, that what happenend with Francesco Gabbani last year, he won both but the press ranked Diodato so high ( 61 %) that in the end il Gabba lost. For tonight, there will be a big suspens but anyway, it was a good Festival,… Read more »

Gaudiano would be the best pick for ESC. Won’t happen unfortunately, because he’s from the Nuove Proposti. For me “Polvere da sparo” is the best song of San Remo this year.

With so many options, at least it will be unpredictable and fun to watch. I really don’t think that the juries, the press and the televote will have the same winner, but the question is – who will prevail? Viable options include Ermal, Annalisa, Irama, Francesca & Fedez, Maneskin, Willie and Arisa. All of them have songs which wouldn’t harm Italy’s reputation of sending good songs. Not all of them would have an equal success or would climb on my list in the same way. And as much as love both Ermal and his song, I think that Italy might… Read more »

In fairness Il Volo were well outside of the top ten in both juries and still made the top 3 whilst having to fight a dog race with ultimo in the televote.

If fedez and francesca win the televote by as big a margin as is expected and sneak into the top 3, then its a new vote and everything is up for grabs.

Everything is almost alright, except one thing. How are Francesca and Fedez so low? I don’t understand how these people vote. I am happy for Maneskin, Irama and La rappresentante, one of them can easily go to the superfinal, at least Maneskin and Irama will get a huge public support to boost them to final three. I think that Chiamami per nome will win the public vote but they are so unjustified low so that it will not help them; they lost their last chance…

They’re so low because Fedez is not good live, that’s not difficult to grasp. He should have just rapped and let Francesca do the singing.

It seemed that last night he exactly let Francesca do the singing because when they were singing together you could hear almost only Francesca while he was like whispering.

For my favourites: Madame, Irama, Annalisa and Måneskin. I didn’t dare to hope Måneskin would be so high up after four nights, but I’m so glad they are. I’m a fan of their music and was really excited when I heard they are in the mix.

The press jury likes two things: different (Colapesce Dimartino and Måneskin) and lyrical content (Colapesce Dimartino and Willie Peyote). Fasma has a catchy song but it’s nothin original in the Italian music scene and the lyrics are terrifyingly basic

I suppose it is a matter of perspective (and my age) but I would not describe Colapesce Dimartino and Maneskin as “different”. These each have their own merits but that style has been done many, many, many times before.

I don’t understand Italian so accept Fasma may be very basic lyrically but the central concept of”Talk to me” and the passion with which he delivers it makes the emotion very relatable.

You gotta take into account that Sanremo isnt like eurovision or any of the other mainstream singing/music shows, its an elitist comp run and judged by the elitist music critics of the italian music scene. And as with the elitist music critics in the english language music scene, lyrics are generally one of if not the very top criteria for these guys. In eurovision noone really cares about lyrics as most casual voters dont even speak english and one look through the list of jury members for each country and youll see that most dont exactly come from revered critical… Read more »

Oh well, I see no one commenting on how underrated is the monumental song “Chiamami per nome”, but I’ll do it. 🙁

If this wins SanRemo it will be my #1 on the rankings, something that might remain until the end. I clearly do not understand why juries downvote it in that way, while they overhype (again) Ermal Meta

Ermal mayby wants to go in eurovision too, we all speculate that he doesn’t want to go twice but we don’t know, he would be very legitimate as the winner and he would defend the classical italian ballad, music with beautiful italian lyrics, author’s music, in eurovision and Italy could be proud of that.

I suppose ’cause Italy is a conservative country, especially musically, we have a huge tradition of superlative songrwriting and many of the new artist cannot even come close to the old poetry.

That’s why a lot of young singers are going down with the rankings.

For example Irama has a ludicrous lyrics just comparing it to other partecipants.

Mai dire mai is one of the best written song on the other hand.

That’s an interesting perspective. I don’t know Italian very well at all, so clearly I have no grounding to judge the lyrical quality of the song, only the musical vibe. I like Willie’s song sonically but the English translation makes it sound like he’s having a midlife crisis and grumpily fighting the inevitable passage of time – but in Italian it may be a beautiful bit of writing so it is interesting to get that perspective.

With Willie Peyote is more of a superiority complex than a midlife crisis. Peyote is a rapper but he’s not part of the rap scene, he’s a “May 1st” artist: in Rome on 1st May the unions hold a big concert where in the evening play a lot of big names of Italian music and in afternoon there are a lot of lesser known artists that are political in their music and generally come from the singer songwriter style or from the indie and rock scenes. So, in this song Peyote is dissing on the rap scene which he’s not… Read more »

Idk if you’re italian or not but I agree with Milanolich to a certain degree. Italian modern culture is deeply connected too the Reistence and the Partisan Movement, especially with the old Communist Party. The bond with that past it’s gradually fading away but a left-focused public opinion is still here, absurdly ’cause again Italy is profoundly conservative.

Being Italian a neo-latin language does not well when traslated to english, you can imagine why. Willy’s song is strongly critical, well written and well executed. Music market here is controversial, Sanremo even more. That said, the artistic director picked the songs and the artist according to his taste, (and to a certain degree the popularity on the several social media), many good artist are not even in the competition. At least half of the newcomers songs are better than the so-called Big’s ones both lirically and musically. About the press jury, many are not so young journalists so not… Read more »

Great thread, thanks everyone, I think I have learned a lot about what is going on in Italy. Coming back to my original observation, I think why I equated Willie’s song to a midlife crisis is that it reminds me of the views of certain people when they get to a certain age and they realise that they are no longer young and get frustrated by that fact. There comes a point when you have to accept that the next generation does not belong to you and there is little point trying to fight it. That would be my advice… Read more »

Maneskin are the only ones (among your popular picks) with a chance to beat Ermal Meta.

Well, at least the press helped Maneskin and La Rappresentante di Lista. They could have done more for Madame though. And what the hell they did to Annalisa? My televote prediction:
1st Fedez Francesca
2nd Irama
3rd Maneskin
4rth Ermal
5th Colapesce Dimartino
6th Lo Stato Sociale
7th Annalisa
8th Arisa
9th La Rappresentante di lista
10th Willy Peyote
If it’s something like that then Ermal, Maneskin and Irama will be superfinalists, and Ermal will be 1st in demoscopic 2nd in press and 3rd in televote, Irama will be 2nd in demoscopic 3rd in press 1st in televote, and Maneskin 3rd in demoscopic 1st in press and 2nd in televote, so it will be very very very open.

So 1 month ago when the press/jurors published their first opinions about the songs they gave first place to Colapesce Di martino (8.1 points) and second place to Willie Peyote with 7.9. All the other artist were really far behind them, with Maneskin, Max Gaze and Ghemon receiving all the next highest score with 7.1. So their top favourites are still the same mostly. So the press has spoken, now at this point assuming that tomorrow is 100% televote and it counts for 25% of the final ranking, the top 3 televote will be Fedez Francesca, Irama, and Maneskin, because they are the most popular seeing their own youtube channels, but Ermal is already in superfinal because a top 10 in televote is enough for him to stay in the top 3 and he will be certainly in the top 5 in televote so, but for the rest, not easy: Irama, if he manages to be 2nd at least in televote maybe he can… Read more »

So is the voting more based on artist than song? I feel like irama’s song is way too autotuned, doesn’t have a great hook and his stage presence is questionable. Francesca & fedaz and måneskin’s songs are just poor. Ermal’s song is decent but the chorus could have been a lot more.

Yeah unfortunately the televote almost everytime reflect the popularity of the artists rather than the quality of the songs, yeah if Irama win this autotune will be divisive and will be controversial, but in the case of Irama’s song, it’s the autotune that makes his song original and more strong than a simple summer hit, so I don’t know but it’s still quality and fresh. Ermal it’s classical but timeless. Francesca Fedez too it’s fresh because of the hip hop part, so I can see why they are popular, and in their cases they bring their popularity but quality too… Read more »

I think rikkis autotune song from 2020 was better than irama, I think irama is not a good modern, rather robotic. Surely Italy aren’t gonna select a hip hop song? Hypothetically speaking, ermal, irama and annalisa get to the superfinal, who do you think wins? Also, would anyone of the favourites choose not to go to Eurovision?

I guess that what he meant is that the fanbase of some artists might be bigger and of course that might be reflected in the televote. However, I am not so sure of that. I believe that the fanbase of Annalisa, Irama and Måneskin are similar in size, and Annalisa starts with a better position than the other two.
The stage presence of Irama is difficult to judge with that performance, since what we see was just the video of the general rehearsal (he’s unfortunately in quarantine since Tuesday) and therefore he probably didn’t perform at his best.

The fanbase of Annalisa is far to be at the same level as Irama and Maneskin, look at their followers on their youtube channels.

C&D, Willie and Måneskin were expected to be the top3 tonight. They are getting good press reviews since the journalists listened their songs. Annalisa’s song was hardly criticized from the beginning by the press, which was quite shocked to see her song in the top the first night. So also her low rank today was predictable. About televote: In his two previous participations in the “main category”, Ermal has been 6th in the televote (3rd total), and 1st when he won with “Non mi avete fatto niente” with a landslide (24.6% of televotes out of 20 artists). I hate to say it, but right now I dont think she has any. Coming 17th in the press is a complete death knoll, because theres no way in hell she will win the televote and even if by some miracle she did get into the top 3 the press would completely kill her chances. And the press voting basically destroyed Annalisa’s winning chance. Seriously, this 17th place is undeserved.

Ikr, like what’s their fricking reasoning? So flipping annoying. Hopefully something crazy good and unexpected can happen with the televote tomorrow and let annalisa claim her deserved victory. She’d definitely do the best for Italy at Eurovision. Otherwise this Eurovision could turn into the worst Eurovision since the 2000s.

What is so bad about Aiello’s song to be placed so low by everyone? His vocals are good, his stage performance as well, his outfit not so, but even Achille Lauro managed to achieve a top 10 result with worse vocals/outfits. Is it the lyrics which make people hate it?

Come on. His vocals are awful, he is just screaming

The song is decent but only in the studio version. Live is just awful.
And outfits do not really play a role in Sanremo voting. No jury would vote for the outfit or for what happens on stage beside the song.

Congratulations to Gaudiano!! What a magnificent performance. He would have slayed at Eurovision. He’s a star! Better than any of the main competitors.

Televoting bloodbath coming tomorrow with Annalisa, Maneskin and Irama to get that last final spot. Could be brutal.

Ahhhh I’m so frustrated :/ Most of my personal favorites will probably not represent their countries this year. Keiino, Jüri Pootsmann, Irama… I really hope at least one of the boys makes it to Rotterdam !!!

La rappresentante di lista is the only song worthy of winning imho. Fingers crossed (but ‘I see it hard’ 🙂 ).
