Måneskin

The 71st edition of the Sanremo Music Festival has come to an end with a twist: rock band Måneskin won the crown and the traditional leoncino — the little golden lion awarded to the sanremese winner.

The quartet launched by X Factor Italy immediately caught the audience’s attention with electrifying performances of their powerful entry “Zitti e buoni”, but they were not on the podium in the provisional ranking before the start of the final, reached instead thanks to the support of the televote.

But will Måneskin represent Italy at the Eurovision in Rotterdam? The confirmation should arrive in the coming hours, during the traditional press conference that usually follows the final of the kermesse. However, for this year, it has been postponed to Sunday morning, at 11.30 CET

In case they refuse, RAI will internally choose another of the 25 singers in the competition, regardless of their final ranking.

Sanremo 2021 final results

The overall combined results throughout the week consisted of televoting (25%), the press jury (25%), the orchestra (25%) and the demoscopic poll (25%). All 26 finalists started off with the scores achieved in the four previous evenings behind them when they performed their entries on the night judged by televoting.

After the first round of voting, Ermal Meta, Francesca Michielin & Fedez and Måneskin advanced to the second and last round. Here all the scores were reset to zero and the demoscopic jury (33%), the press room (33%) and the televote (34%) came back into play. In the end, it was Måneskin who emerged triumphant!

Overall ranking

  1. Måneskin – Zitti e buoni
  2. Francesca Michielin & Fedez – Chiamami per nome
  3. Ermal Meta – Un milione di cose da dirti
  4. Colapesce & Dimartino – Musica leggerissima
  5. Irama – La genesi del tuo colore
  6. Willie Peyote – Mai dire mai (La locura)
  7. Annalisa – Dieci
  8. Madame – Voce
  9. Orietta Berti – Quando ti sei innamorato
  10. Arisa – Potevi fare di più
  11. La Rappresentante di Lista – Amare
  12. Extraliscio feat. Davide Toffolo – Bianca luce nera
  13. Lo Stato Sociale – Combat pop
  14. Noemi – Glicine
  15. Malika Ayane – Ti piaci così
  16. Fulminacci – Santa Marinella
  17. Max Gazzè – Il farmacista
  18. Fasma – Parlami
  19. Gaia – Cuore amaro
  20. Coma_Cose – Fiamme negli occhi
  21. Ghemon – Momento perfetto
  22. Francesco Renga – Quando trovo te
  23. Gio Evan – Arnica
  24. Bugo – E invece sì
  25. Aiello – Ora
  26. Random – Torno a te

Who are Sanremo 2021 winners Måneskin?

Måneskin (Danish for ‘moonshine’) is an Italian rock band from Rome, consisting of lead vocalist Damiano David, bassist Victoria De Angelis, guitarist Thomas Raggi, and drummer Ethan Torchio. The band rose to fame after ending up second in the eleventh series of the Italian series of X Factor in 2017.

Immediately after the talent show, they skyrocketed in the charts, collecting several platinum records thanks to the first single “Chosen” and the songs included in the debut album “Il ballo della vita”: “Morirò da re”, “L’altra dimensione”, “Le parole lontane” and the super hit #1 in the Italian FIMI Singles Chart and 5x platinum “Torno a casa”.

Before participating at Sanremo they released the single “Vent’anni” which will be part of the new album “Teatro d’ira: Vol.1” out on March 19, 2021.

Do you like “Zitti e buoni” by Måneskin? Would you like to see the band go to Rotterdam in May? Share your thoughts below!

In the first televote of the night (with 26 artists), they arrived 2nd with 13% after Michielin/Fedez (16%). Then in the top3 final, they won the televote with a landslide of votes, probably because people that voted for other excluded artists (Irama, Annalisa, Madame etc) voted also for them.
In general their voters are definitely NOT 50+. Many Italian ESC-fans every year have suggested them as a perfect contestant for ESC. Indeed, the demographic of their voters is mostly in the range 18-35, and it is easy to verify it on the different social media.

It definitely doesn’t sound “Italian” in the traditional sense. Even “Soldi” was undeniably the kind of song you could only get from Italy. But that uniqueness is going to make it stand out, I think.

I´m happy for them but Irama deserved better.. He should be in the top 3 at least imo. I know that he was disadvantaged because of corona but his song is a banger and he was already really good in a rehearsal, just imagine him live.. Being 5th with just one rehearsal footage speaks volumes about how good he is! Wish he got a real chance is all I´m saying

I think it’s the base line. Not that it’s the same melody, but similar sound to it – tbh it reminds me the band who did the Seven nation army, but I forgot what’s their name and am too lazy to look it up. Kinda like hearing Blind Channel their base line immediately reminded me Korn.

Well this is an unexpected entry from Italy but damn. I’m not a rock fan at all, but this has such a ball to the walls speed that I just can’t dislike. As long as rock has a kind of melody, I can still like it. I loved Manga for instance. Zitti e Buoni is less melodic but the rapid fire Damiano has when he’s bursting out the lyrics is impressive. I like Italy is sending something we don’t necessarily expect from them. Also, those skin suits are sexy as hell.

Rotterdam 2021 is the year of the bands:

  • Italy: Maneskin = Rockband
  • Finland = Blind Channel = Post-hardcore band
  • (probably) Russia: Little Big = Rave band
  • Lithuania: The Roop = Pop rock band
  • Serbia: Hurricane = Pop-R&B girl band
  • Belgium: Hooverphonic = Triphop band (that’s what I found on the internet)
  • Iceland: Dadi og Gagnamagnid = Electronic band
  • Ukraine: Go_A = Electro-folk band
  • Portugal: The Black Mamba = Blues, soul and funk band

And who knows, Belarus might even send a band.

They are completely different types of rock songs so I don’t think they necessarily compete with one another. Italy is an artsy, classic rock inspired song and Finland is an angsty Nu metal inspired song. It is a bit like saying which ballad will do best – France or Slovenia – they are completely different in my opinion and not necessarily competing for the same votes.

Finland will do better in Western countries who typically enjoy the more commercial songs. Italy will do better in Eastern countries who typically vote for standout acts not trying to appeal as much to the mainstream market. Juries have more Western taste and will uplift Finland, thus Finland will do better but it depends on the running order in the final. I’d be surprised to see any of them outside the top 10 in televote but Måneskin needs to put on a show to get there, they need to be all out there and not be so ”safe” as the… Read more »

Usually after every national final or song release the country which has chosen/released their act and/or song gets a lot of bets suddenly, thus making most of the countries head to number one on betting odds.

They’ll be more rational after all of the songs are released and clear favourites seem less of a lucky hunch. Don’t worry!

You can’t use bookmakers odds as some kind of validity of anything for Sanremo. Bookmakers have no clue if a song is good or not in Sanremo because they are NOT released beforehand. From tuesday to friday the odds just adapt to the Sanremo ranking of that night. Even when they were behind it was pretty clear that Fedez/Michielin had a good shot for the top3, as well as Måneskin (I didn’t expect they were 2nd in the televote, but everyone with a little bit of insight in Sanremo would have placed them in the range 2nd-4th at the televote).… Read more »

We still don’t know if this is the song they’ll choose to bring to Rotterdam since per Sanremo rule it’s choosen the artist and not the song. The fact that the previous artists chose to bring their Sanremo songs doesn’t mean it will happen also this time.
There are some chances they will bring this in English or that they will bring a completely new English song since they made a couple of those at the beginning.

Most enjoyable, and they appear to buy their clothes in the same shop as Hatari which shows their excellent taste. I was very fond of Francesca & Fedez, but a little of something different is no bad thing.

Although I feel sorry for my favs not even reaching the top 3, and even if the winners (should they accept to go to esc) would not likely be in my esc top 10, I must admit they could do well as they bring something different with the potential to stand out, as Mahmood did two years ago. Good luck, Italy!
