Fyr & Flamme _Øve os på hinanden_ Denmark Eurovision 2021

Fyr & Flamme are the synth-tastic duo that won Dansk Melodi Grand Prix 2021 with “Øve Os På Hinanden”. This will mark the first time since 1997 that Denmark will send a song in Danish to Eurovision, with the duo confirming that this is the version they intend to sing in May.

Denmark in Eurovision 2021: Fyr Og Flamme – “Øve Os På Hinanden”

Fyr & Flamme, a duo consisting of Jesper Groth and Laurits Emanuel, released their debut single “Menneskeforbruger” in 2020. They released “Kamæleon” soon after, setting their brand as firmly retro, synthy, colourful and danceable.

The duo have stated that it has been their childhood dream to compete in Dansk Melodi Grand Prix. “This is something other than playing a song on the radio. In the Grand Prix, you vote on a message, a stage performance and perhaps on a statement.” Jesper explains. “There is so much at the Melodi Grand Prix that is different, and I think there are some more who have now opened their eyes to us, and it’s cool”. Now that one dream has been achieved, their focus will be firmly set on another — performing on the Eurovision stage.

What do the “Øve Os På Hinanden” lyrics mean?

“Øve Os På Hinanden” (Practice On Each Other) is a self-composed dance number which, on the face of it, is about inviting your love to dance, forgetting our own internal insecurities and just enjoying the rhythm of the music. It’s not about being an expert dancer, it’s all about letting go. “So I start dancing / I’ve practiced it at home / And I pray to my creator that it takes hold of me”

He might feel that initial spark with that special someone. “Time has stopped / What is it we’re waiting for? / Your eyes are saying the same thing as mine” and he decides to invite her for a dance as the party gets going. “(On a dance-dancefloor) / We’ll never be more alive than right now”.

However, instead of approaching the dance floor with swagger, the song expresses the down-to-earth universal quality that we’re all humans, and while we might not know, we will just take a crack at it, for it’s the fun that matters. “No one knows how it’s done / So let’s practice on each other”.

There are other interpretations of the lyrics too, especially on social media. Because, of course, dancing isn’t the only activity that one can engage in on a dance floor. The songs protagonists are clearly teenagers “soon we’re two adults”, and, with hormones running high, it’s probably safe to bet that they’re interested in exploring more than the latest dance steps. There’s also a potentially homoerotic element to proceedings — “You’re the woman, I’m the man” does not mean the same thing as “you’re a women, I’m a man”.

Overall, it’s a very down to earth take on the universal experience of self-discovery and having fun while doing it. And, sometimes, instead of confidence, we all just need to say “we might not know, but let’s have a blast as we practice together”.

Danish text

English translation

Tiden er gået i stå
Du er kvinden, jeg еr manden
Hele gulvet er gået fra forstanden
La’ os øve på hinanden

Tiden er gået i stå

Time has stopped
What is it we’re waiting for?
Your eyes are saying the same thing as mine
So I start dancing
I’ve practiced it at home
And I pray to my creator that it takes hold of me(A dancefloor)
Rivals stretch their legs and wage war
(On a dancefloor)
But if you don’t let go of me, then we rise

No one knows how it’s done
So let’s practice on each other
Soon we’re two adults
You’re the woman, I’m the man
The whole floor has lost its mind
Let’s practice on each other

Time has stopped
Your dress is light blue
You say something, I can’t hear while the rhythm is going

(On a dancefloor)
Where hearts swell and break in two
(On a dance-dancefloor)
We’ll never be more alive than right now

No one knows how it’s done
So let’s practice on each other
Soon we’re two adults
You’re the woman, I’m the man
The whole floor has lost its mind
Let’s practice on each other

A dancefloor where hearts swell and break in two
We’ll never be more alive than right here and now
The whole floor has lost its mind
Let’s practice on each other

No one knows how it’s done
So let’s practice on each other
Soon we’re two adults
You’re the woman, I’m the man
The whole floor has lost its mind
Let’s practice on each other

Don’t trust the above translation. I suspect ot was done by a non-native Danish speaker because it’s subtly wrong. Tiden er gået i stå – “Time has ground to a halt”, or my preferred translation, “Time has come to a standstill” for style. Så jeg sætter i et dansetrin jeg har øvet på hjemmefra – So I bust out a dance move I’ve been practicing. From home. Og be’r til min skaber, at de griber mig – And pray to my creator that THEY grab a hold of me Men hvis du ikke slipper mig, så letter vi – But… Read more »

What a sweet picture of the both, really enjoying Denmark’s unexpected retro song and nice to know what the lyrics mean. Full of charm.

I like the metaphors! Subtlety and ambiguity can be more exciting and have more depth than being explicitly straightforward.

I think it’s just referred to as sex.

I actually like it. Some people complain that it’s dated but I think it is supposed to be that way. Many songs today are inspired by the 80s and they went a step farther and made a song that actually sounds like something straight of the 80s. But I’m pretty sure that was their goal. The song feels nostalgic (even though I was not alive in the 80s, lol) and even though I do not speak Danish I think that the melody itself conveys the message somehow. It feels sweet.

This is such a sweet, endearing track and prescient given the experience we have all had over the last 12 months. I wish them and their fun times all the very best in Rotterdam!

I give Denmark props for picking something in Danish and for the artists for keeping it in Danish instead of compromising for the Eurovision fandom that have complained since the song was selected. They’ve been rewarded with a #1 song in Denmark which is a lot better than some of these other “fan favorites” have done in their own countries. You do you boo-boo.

As a Dane, let me just clearify, that it is about having sex for the first time and figuring it all out, just presented in a different (PG Eurovision-Disco) package. But the innuendos are very clear in Danish.

As a Dane, I kindly disagree. The lyrics IS about dancing. Sure, you can always interpret the lyrics to something else – but the lyrics word for word is about dancing ??
