Which Montaigne Eurovision song is your favourite?

A record-breaking 26 artists are returning to Eurovision this year. Following the cancellation of last year’s contest, the majority of the class of 2020 are back to finally get their chance on the Eurovision stage. But, as is standard Eurovision regulation, they’ve all got new songs.

Thus, comparisons to their previous entries are inevitable. So, we want to hear from our readers. Do you prefer the returning artists’ 2020 or 2021 songs?

Today, we’re going down under and shining a light on Australia. Last year, Montaigne was set to perform “Don’t Break Me” in Rotterdam. And this year, she’s bringing “Technicolour” to the Eurovision stage. Two years, two tracks. But which do you prefer? Vote in our poll now!

Scroll down to vote in our poll.

“Don’t Break Me” (Australia 2020)

Montaigne won the right to represent Australia at Eurovision 2020 following her victory at Eurovision – Australia Decides 2020. “Don’t Break Me” saw the Sydney-born singer costumed like a clown — a metaphor for the feelings conveyed by the song’s lyrics. With the Wiwi Jury — our in-house panel of music unprofessionals — Montaigne scored an average of 7.73/10.

“This is simply an excellent pop song”, wiwiblogger Tom noted. “I fell in love with “Don’t Break Me” when I first listened to it on YouTube. It’s beautifully sung, passionate, and would have been catnip for juries.”

“Technicolour” (Australia 2021)

Australian broadcaster SBS internally selected Montaigne for Eurovision 2021. Her song was also internally selected.

“Technicolor” stays true to Montaigne’s fantasy-pop vibe and shows off her vocal capacity.

Poll battle — Australia: Which Montaigne song is your favourite?

As there are only two songs to choose from, you can only vote for one. And as always, you can only vote once, so make it count. Start voting now!

Don’t break me is the better song, but technicolour has the better vocals, better aesthetic, more authentic so when you weigh it the are pretty much equal

I think these two are by far the weakest entries Australia sent to esc.
I think that Technicolour has more chances to qualify to the final, but I prefer 2020 entry.

definitely technicolour. don’t break me was way too generic for the type of artist montaigne sells herself as

lol I already said it that the DNA production was on point for Don’t Break Me and people’s reactions and votes say volume. You can call them boring but at least they give you quality. Don’t Break Me is intriguing and thumping and catchy enough to gain people’s attention and I love it. However, Technicolor is poorly produced with those dated beats, weird spoken words and uninspiring instruments. Hyperpop is not for Eurovision and the reactions from the fans say a lot. Australia did well when they sent high quality production pop songs with good staging and vocals and I… Read more »

Wow, what a tough question. Both songs are great. Even if I’ll probably listen to ‘Don’t break me’ more often in the future, I prefer ´Technicolour’ and what Montaigne’s voice shows there. I just keep my fingers crossed, hoping Montaigne won’t ruin it on stage by doing something weird…

See, I love Don’t Break Me and unlike everyone else, Australia is actually one of my favorite countries in Eurovision. That being said, I absolutely can not stand Technicolour, everything about it is unpleasant to me, I don’t like how her voice sounds, I dislike the transition from the verse to the chorus, I don’t like the lyrics because I don’t get what “technicolour” has to do with anything, like… If it’s a metaphor for something else, I don’t get it, and most importantly, I REAAALY don’t like how her voice sounds in it.

i like ‘don’t break me’ better. and with a song as risky as ‘technicolour’, diane warren has to be thinking ‘are you kidding me?’. while ‘technicolour’ isn’t too bad, it still might very well end up being australia’s first nq. nevertheless, i appreciate the ballsy decision they took with their entry. we really don’t need any more countries playing it safe. so even if you, my dear aussies, possibly exit in the semis, there’s still a good reason for you to hold your heads up high. just please, please, PLEASE get rid of that weird ruff thing from 2020. otherwise… Read more »

Aussie opinion here: unless the Warren song was so much better, I would prefer our song to be done by Australian songwriters, because it’s always been done that way here.

This is defo the most risky we’ve done since kmh but she was in a weak semi and this ones effectively not in ROTTERDAM.

what exactly did you find to be cringy? the song itself, the performance or both?

None.
In a completely fair world, Australia would be a NQ this year. But they are lucky because we are not living in a fair world. Good luck them though..

i feel like you’re hinting at some sort of bonus for australian entries. but why would the ebu still favor australia in 2021? as far as i know, eurovision week is sbs’ biggest time of the year, so they’d be happy to participate no matter what. and going by the viewing figures, the australian tv market isn’t that important …?

The 2020 entry was amazing! I really believed it could reach top-5 easily. This year’s entry is so disappointing. Good luck Australia!

Don’t Break Me was one of my favourite from 2020. It had a very deep meaning to me. I find Technicolour annoying to listen to, especially the “techni-technicolor, techni-technicolor” part.

Easy – Don’t Break Me. I love that song. Technicolor has some good moments, but the noise during the chorus is super iritating.

I liked ‘Don’t Break Me’ and the Montaigne of 2020. That Montaigne conveyed a far more artistic image, with a truly raw and emotional song. Not afraid to look silly and expressive and be unique for the sake of her art. I also liked the goofy Soccer playing girl next door vibe. The 2021 Montaigne seems more pretentious, plastic and politically parading.

And yet she says she feels more connected to Technicolor seeing as she created the song and image herself. Whereas everything last year was manufactured for her, she didn’t write don’t break me, she didn’t feel comfortable performing the song and such.

leaving the song aside, i’d say that collar of hers last year was as pretentious as it can get. it didn’t really feel like she wore it because she wanted to. and who, in one’s right mind, would actually wear such an outfit of his/her own free will?

Funny I’m on the opposite side here, I totally got stuck on repeat with Don’t Break Me but this Technicolour just can’t get into my head… I’m afraid it won’t even be a top 10 unless she brings an extraordinary live performance (which I believe she can)

2021 of course, she doesn’t look like an ugly clown anymore, and the 2020 song was so random and unoriginal, just a standard ballad with messy vocals. She is much greater with Technicolour, an impressive singing lesson, love her voice in the new song, and also way catchier than her previous attempt.

Technicolour is so much bolder and has way more personality. Y’all were criticizing the fact that Don’t break me was basic, and now you’re criticizing the fact that Technicolour is too original lol

Tough choice, I like them both! They are both sitting around the 10-15 bracket in my list. I think I would give it just to Technicolor, it has a little more edge and variety to it which I like. Montaigne should be proud of the two songs she has delivered for Eurovision.

Technicolour sounds more mature and I believe the staging will be better and more complete than Don’t break me.
Last year’s package looked like an unfinished, amateur project.

In Don’t break me I felt that she was screaming more than singing (at least in the published video, because I know she is a good vocalist). In Technicolour she is improved as an artist and that will be obvious in Rotterdam
