It is the end of an era. This Friday John and Edward Grimes, aka Jedward, will shave off their iconic quiff hairdos in support of the Irish Cancer Society. The jepic haircuts will take place live on Ireland’s The Late Late Show this Friday, March 26.

The twins confirmed the news of their de-quiffing with posts on social media. On a Twitter post, the brothers shared that their mother had died of cancer and confirmed that their haircuts would be in aid of the Irish Cancer Society.

In an Instagram post, John and Edward wrote, “We’re hopeful the funds raised will contribute to a cancer-free future. We are honouring the memory of all those that have come and gone! We are sending strength and love to all those suffering, Don’t give up!”

The brothers could also be seen with their luxuriant quiffs, artistically arranged atop their heads like blonde tidal waves.

The de-quiffing will take place on Daffodil Day, the Irish Cancer Society’s annual fundraising day. The cutting of hair is a common activity for cancer fundraising, whether it’s for donating hair to be used for wigs, an empathic gesture for cancer patients who have lost their own hair, or simple as a way of drawing attention to a good cause.

Jedward’s jepic hair at Eurovision

While the Grimes brothers developed their iconic hairstyle during their time on The X Factor UK in 2009, it was at Eurovision 2011 one decade ago that their quiffs gained infamy.

Jedward turned up on stage in Düsseldorf with red military-style jackets and sky-high quiffs. Their hairstyles were even immortalised on the giant LED wall, which saw the twins win the Marcel Bezençon Artistic Award for the staging.

While Jedward returned to Eurovision 2012, their quiffs didn’t make it to the Baku stage. The twins chose to wear their hair in a flatter style for the “Waterline” performance.

In 2014, Jedward were awarded “Highest Hair” as part of the Eurovision Book of Records skits played during the Eurovision 2014 ad break slots. The segment claimed that Jedward’s quiffs had measured a record 18.2cm tall — even higher than the highest hairdos sported in the 1980s, the decade of mouse and perms.

Jedward will shave off their quiffs on The Late Late Show, Friday 26 March, 21:35 GMT (22:35 CET) on RTÉ.

What do you think of Jedward’s haircut plans? What hairstyle should they go for next? Tell us your thoughts below!

Legends of The Golden Era of Eurovision!

Like them or loathe them, but they brought so much joy to Eurovision and there was a great atmosphere here in Ireland when they were representing us. They briefly managed to win over the Irish and get them interested in Eurovision again.
Sadly we reverted to type quick enough and the public lost interest again, but the Jedward era was a mini-Renaissance for Ireland and Eurovision.

Their song was actually one of the best (with THE best staging/LED visuals by far) back in 2011. Well deserved 8th place!

Oh yeah! Along with Sweden and Denmark, they were in my top 3.
Definitely would not be against them coming back to represent us, they haven’t changed a bit in those 10 years, and next year will be 10 years since their last appearance.
Moments probably past though, but if Senhit can do it….

Considering they’ve maintained those hairstyles throughout their career, shaving off the quiffs is a big gesture and obviously a poignant one to show solidarity with cancer sufferers. Good on them, and hopefully raising awareness and money brings them comfort for losing their mom so young.

They’re turning 30 this year and yet they look exactly the same as they did when they competed on X Factor and Eurovision

I’m so sorry they lost their mother to cancer. I hope the quiffs will be donated into a fabulous wig

Still lamenting Ireland not making top 3 in 2011.
