Which Vincent Bueno song is your favourite?

Following the cancellation of Eurovision last year, the majority of the class of 2020 received the comeback ticket to sing again at Eurovision 2021. A massive 26 artists will return to represent their countries at Eurovision 2021. But as per the standard Eurovision rules, they’ve all got new songs.

Thus, comparisons to these artists’ previous entries are inevitable. So, we want to hear from our readers. Do you prefer the returning acts’ 2020 or 2021 songs?

Today, we want to hear your opinions about Austria. In 2020, Vincent Bueno was set to sing “Alive” at Eurovision. This year, he’s taking “Amen” to Rotterdam. Two years, two very different tracks. But which is your favourite? Vote in our poll now!

Scroll down to vote in our poll.

“Alive” (Austria 2020)

Vincent Bueno’s Eurovision 2020 entry was a radio-friendly dance-pop track, somewhere between the musical stylings of Justin Timberlake and Bruno Mars. With the Wiwi Jury — our in-house panel of music unprofessionals — it scored an average of 5.53/10.

“Vincent is a performer and it was the absolute right decision to give him an upbeat song with funky elements”, wiwiblogger Calvin said. “The arrangement isn’t the most captivating or unique ever, but it fits with the general mood of the song. “Alive” awakens memories of “What’s the Pressure” (Belgium 2016). Both songs aren’t made for a studio but for the stage, where they unfold their full energy. Austria could have ended up surprisingly well!”

“Amen” (Austria 2021)

“Amen” marks a huge departure from Vincent’s 2020 sound.

His Eurovision 2021 entry is a poetic ballad about the breakdown of a relationship.

Poll battle — Austria: Which Vincent Bueno song is your favourite?

As there are only two songs to choose from, you can only vote for one. And as always, you can only vote once, so make it count. Start voting now!

If I was on Vincent’s team, reviewing the fan reaction, I’d encourage him to consider a revamp of the song. It would be an improvement to make the tone less earnest and more ironic, a stronger beat in the second verse, and the chorus certainly needs changing. The big problem I have with the song is that it sounds so bitter, blameful, self-pitying and self-centred. It’s like the cliche of a divorced man, blaming his wife for leaving him without realising how unbearable and obstinate his behaviour was. The more I dwell on the content of the song, the more… Read more »

Careful Jimmy. I wouldn’t want you to get into trouble like I did. (I agree about the song though.)

Personally feel like Amen is a step back from Alive. I get that he wanted to send a more personal song with Amen but we gotta remember that Austria is still reeling from its non-qualification from Paenda’s Limits so the whole point of the delegation selecting Alive was because it was a more moving entry and Vincent is a total package on stage. With Amen being his song, I feel like he will repeat what Paenda’s Limit did in 2019 so I hope more he will have more tricks under his sleeve with the staging and performance.

Woki mit deim Popo has better lyrics than either Alive or Amen.

But hopefully you’re right about Vincent having a total package ready for the stage. It can’t be much worse than Paenda.

I don’t particularly like either of them, but I prefer ‘Alive’ out of the two options.

Unfortunately, it’s ‘Neither’ for me as well. When I opened the page, I half expected the comments to be full of this response, but I knew at least one particular person would! 😛

Despite being very different songs, both seem to be missing something. With “Alive,” it was missing that “hit it” moment from the funk bass line. With “Amen,” the ballad seems to repeat its Chorus and ask its questions a lot, but ultimately doesn’t develop the idea much beyond that. I mean “are you getting what you wanted?” can really only be asked a few times before one knows the answer. 😀

Ha, yes exactly. Clearly, she wasn’t getting what she wanted, Vincent! It feels like a type of song that would only be written by a straight cis male.

Pretty hateful comment from person who’s expecting themself to be respected by others

Far from it—but if you think what I said was hateful, I’m glad your experience of hatefulness in the world has been so limited and sheltered. My comment was light-hearted, but I’ll explain why I said it—and stand by comment that the song comes across as though it’s written by someone quite entitled. The song’s lyrics, for me, speak from a position of someone dismayed about being dumped by someone else. At every stage, they sound quite entitled and bitter about it: “Amen, I guess You said that it’s time for us to put Our love to rest Dressed in… Read more »

That’s what I thought about Pretender, by Lillasyster. With both songs, I am on the ex-girlfriend’s side and glad she escaped.

Add in the context of a real life family tragedy, could the lyrics mean more than just a simple heartbreak?

Gosh that’s already so much analysis from you all. At least save something, otherwise there will be nothing left for the Wiwi Jury! 🙂

I’d be happy to join the Wiwi team and contribute lyric review articles—which would be nice even for non-Contest songs.

I like Amen, but is it just me, or does it have like an ominous sound to it? It makes me feel worried everytime I hear it lol

Also, Alive was better imo. It’s weird that they went with a ballad for Vincent, since he seemed like he could dance well in the video, but oh well. It’s decent either way

Just wanted to point out how versatile singer he is and how brave it was to take a 180 turn while other returning artists came back with something similar, playing safe.

Now, I preffer Alive. Its crazy how underrated it was last year, just like Benny is in 2021. He has great voice for a ballad, but this one is just meh for me.

Personally, I find Amen to be a more intriguing entry. The lyrics are quite ambiguous and could be interpreted as the end of a personal relationship (with partner, family member or friend) or even as man’s grudge with God, after the death of a loved one. The chorus gets a bit repetitive and the song doesn’t evolve as much as it could, but there are things to appreciate here. Alive was one of my least listened songs of 2020. Nothing particularly grating, but somewhat boring.

I kindof like the idea of the lyrics being an argument with god/s! But whereas “Tout l’univers” has such depth that it really does allow for a variety of interpretations, I don’t think Vincent’s “Amen” really provides enough and we’re having to do a lot more work to bring its meanings alive.

The problem with that interpretation is that the songwriter then becomes the victim of his own faith. He doesn’t have to believe in God, so he doesn’t have to be angry in the first place. No, I personally think it’s about a break-up, and it’s a “victim card” song. Will be an interesting Wiwi Jury debate for sure.

I think amen is better but nothing special.
And he has something unlikable about him, look at his face, he looks a bit bitchy

I think it’s just a serious pose. In his videos, he always seems sweet and earnest. Maybe a little too earnest, perhaps.

It’s easily “Alive” for me. I like “Amen” too, but a pop ballad that compares a breakup to a funeral doesn’t grow on me.

I liked Alive a lot and was initially not sold on Amen. It has grown on me though and now I rather enjoy it. Alive is still the better song for me, as of now.

I like Amen more, but they are both middle-of-the-road. I have the feeling all these ballads (Estonia, Austria, Slovenia, Georgia, North Macedonia, Belgium, Portugal) will sink in the SF due to televoting and Bulgaria, France and Spain *as part of the big 5* will be left standing.

For me it’s amen. Alive got lost last year, and amen could well this year, but it feels a lot more sincere and it does have an impact. Semi Final 2 is so interesting this year and staging will be sooo important.

It is Amen by a huge margin for me.

Ironically, Alive made me feel dead inside, whereas when Vincent talks about being dead in Amen he has never sounded more alive?
