Greece in Eurovision 2021: Stefania “Last Dance”

Stefania is a Dutch-born singer and actor, with Greek ancestry. She rose to fame in 2014, when she participated in the Dutch version of The Voice Kids. After wowing judges with her audition performance of Alicia Keys’ “No One”, she made it as far as the Battle round before being eliminated. She also sang as part of the Dutch children’s choir Kinderen voor Kinderen. In 2016, Stefania represented The Netherlands at Junior Eurovision in Malta, as part of the three-piece girl group Kisses. Their upbeat song “Kisses and Dancin’” placed eighth in the contest.

More recently, Stefania has turned her efforts to her solo pop career. She has also been working on her pop career in Greece. In 2019, she performed at the Mad VMA music awards, as part of an all-girl cover of Daddy Yankee’s “Con calma”. She was internally selected to represent Greece at Eurovision 2020 with “SUPERG!RL”. After the contest’s cancellation due to COVID-19, she was reselected once more.

What do the “Last Dance” lyrics mean?

“Last Dance” is one of the most 1980s influenced entries of Eurovision 2021. Stefania describes the song as a “very up-tempo track, but it manages to maintain the sensitivity and melody that are usually lost in very dynamic songs”.

But what exactly is the song about? While the music video has references to Greek mythology, the lyrics go for a much more contemporary aesthetic: “My heart was born in neon lights, floating in space like satellites”.

The lyrics tell the story of an electrifying and exciting relationship: “If the dreams we made are made of fire I would give a life just to live the dream again, if our hearts are hanging on a wire let’s forget the world below and dance until the end”. Sadly, the relationship appears to be at an end, with Stefania singing of no forevers and no eternities. She’s holding on to the memories, clinging to the shadows of what is now gone.

However, the songwriters tell us that the message of the song, as well as the video, is that every ending is a new beginning. And indeed, Stefania does point out on multiple occasions that “this ain’t our last dance”. Now, some might be confused by the singer’s seeming indecisiveness — one moment she’s saying that the dance is our last, the next moment she’s saying the opposite. But it’s simply clever wordplay. She and her lover have danced their last dance with each other, but they’ll dance again… just with somebody else.

English text

My heart was born a radical
electric and dynamical
I’ve never listened to the remedies
but no forevers no eternities

Holding on beyond the night
for a shadow that feels right
holding on beyond the night
to you

If the dreams we made are made of fire
I would give a life just to live the dream again
if our hearts are hanging on a wire
let’s forget the world below and dance
until the end

Let’s dance
Our last dance
Rocking romance
This ain’t our last dance
Let’s dance!
Ooh oh oh

My heart was born in neon lights
floating in space like satellites
looking for signs of life tonight
as we collide in black and white

Holding on beyond the night
for a shadow that feels right
holding on beyond the night
to you
If the dreams we made are made of fire
I would give a life just to live the dream again

Let’s dance
Our last dance
Rocking romance
This ain’t our last dance
Let’s dance!
Ooh oh oh
This ain’t our last dance

Take a deeper breath before we touch
running out of time let’s use it up
hold me before the morning comes

Let’s dance
Ooh oh oh
Rocking romance
This ain’t our last dance
Let’s dance!

Great job. Top 3 for me. I’m curious about the staging. This could be the flying dark horse of esc 2021

Well, this videoclip distracts people from listening to the song actually, because this has nothing to do with the song tbh. However, if you listen to this song without watching the video you will surely have goosebumps, especially in the bridge and tue chorus, which makes you dance and shout with her “ohohoh ohohohoh”! It is said that in the live-on-tape performance she totally slayed and everybody was amazed by her voice and her presence. Let’s hope that she will make everyone dance in Rotterdam (if there will be any fans) and be another female from the Greek diaspora bringing… Read more »

I hadnt realise in the video that she saves the world, as Atlas holds the world and she sets him free, then the water falls off and the flood is prevented!
