The country of unicycles, conical hats, bridal backing singers and the epic sax guy is still on the hunt for its first victory. Moldova has a history of turning to its past performers again for Eurovision greatness. Hoping to keep that trend going is Natalia Gordienko with her delectable pop confection “Sugar”.

Moldova in Eurovision 2021: Natalia Gordienko “Sugar”

Natalia Gordienko has been a singer for over twenty years. She first appeared on the Moldovan children’s television show Cheiţa de aur, at the age of ten. Through her teenage years, she continued with her music career. In 2005, she joined the band Millennium which participated in competitions in Hungary and Romania. However, in 2006, she became known to Europe, representing Moldova alongside Arsenium and Connect-R at Eurovision with “Loca”.

After competing at Eurovision, her career has gone from strength to strength. In 2008, she became the youngest singer ever to be given the Artist Emerit honour from the President of Moldova. Since then, she’s continued a career in media and experimented with DJing. Last year, she won Moldova’s Eurovision selection show Finala națională 2020 with “Prison”. After the contest’s cancellation, she was reconfirmed for Eurovision after months of rumours. She has reunited with The Dream Team to escape her prison and serve sweet ear candy on the dance floor.

What do the “Sugar” lyrics mean?

“Sugar” was composed by Dimitris Kontopoulos, Philipp Kirkorov. Mikhail Gutseriev and Sharon Vaughn provide the lyrics. Kontopoulos and Kirkorov are the masterminds behind a multitude of popular Eurovision entries from Eastern Europe. These include “Work Your Magic” (Belarus 2007), “Shady Lady” (Ukraine 2008) and “You Are the Only One” (Russia 2016). Sharon Vaughn was the lyricist for “Scream” (Russia 2019, also composed by Kontopoulos and Kirkorov). She’s also collaborated with Kontopoulos on Greece’s 2020 and 2021 entries, “Superg!rl” and “Last Dance”.

Lyrically, “Sugar” is a sexy dance number that uses a familiar metaphor – sweet confections representing love and intimacy. Natalia opens the song by describing her hunger: “I can’t explain it but there’s something going on, a crazy energy inside of me”. As that grows stronger she references sensations all over her body: “First a tingle, then it turned into a burn”. Eventually, Natalia just has to listen to the signals her body is sending:  “And now I hear my body talk, talk, talk… no way I’ll be alone tonight”. She begs her lover to “come over, come over” to fulfil her desires. Her request reads like a demand: “Give me some… sugar!”

Natalia takes us on the journey in the final verse, how she was satiating her desires with unsatisfying lovers, “compared to you, not worth anything to brag about”. And how wonderful she finds being reunited with them, “Your lips are hot and sweet, I feel it on my knees”. As the song ends, the sensual journey continues: “Now I want only one sugar, sugar on my tongue, I need your kisses baby, gotta keep ‘em coming oh-oh”.

Natalia is definitely much more at home with a sexy dance song than the ballad on offer last year, and this is sure to be a visual treat on stage. Sugar!

“Sugar” lyrics — Natalia Gordienko (Moldova ESC 2021)

Composed by: Dimitris Kontopoulos and Philipp Kirkorov
Lyrics by: Mikhail Gutseriev and Sharon Vaughn

I can’t explain it but there’s something going on
A crazy energy inside of me
First just a tingle, then it turned into a burn
Like fire in my blood

And now I hear my body talk, talk, talk
A taste is all, all I need
And I’m about to climb the walls
No way I’ll be alone tonight

Come over, come over
I’m over doing without you
Come over, come over
Hey lover, give me some sugar

Got me addicted, so you can’t take it away
Get me all satisfied

And now I hear my body talk, talk, talk
A taste is all, all I need
And I’m about to climb the walls
No way I’ll be alone tonight

Come over, come over
I’m over doing without you
Come over, come over
Hey lover, give me some sugar

Just took a little kiss to show how I was missing out
Compared to you, not worth anything to brag about
Your lips are hot and sweet, I feel it to my knees
Now I want only one sugar, sugar on my tongue
I need your kisses baby, gotta keep ’em coming
Oh-oh, oh-oh, oh-oh

Sugar

No It is macho anthem like so many songs this year. As a woman I feel offended by this.

It is twisted irony.

Poll question: Is “Sugar” about cannibalism? 🙂
Jokes aside, I love how the music is so tempting and naughty, and it even uses recognisable melodic hooks as “sweeteners” in places. It’s one of those songs that doesn’t need many good lyrics to make it work, so I bow to the music on this occasion.

The song is already heavily rotated by Love Radio!!!!!

The song is okay, even though it has a weird construction (correct me if I’m wrong):

verse > chorus > pre-chorus (?) > chorus > verse > pre-chorus > chorus > bridge > chorus

It’s a mess and I’m sure the juries won’t like it as much as the fandom does.

Oh yes, I thought the same about the contruction. I found it wierd but it doesn’t make the song sound bad for me so. I really like it

Well I hope the juries are going to be considered from professional that at least know the term “instrumental part”.

I’m not a music expert. That’s why I said: “Correct me if I’m wrong.” And you’re right. So that means that there’s no actual chorus?

According to the information I have on the song “Sugar,” the structure is as follows:
Verse 1 > Pre-chorus > Chorus > [Instrumental] > Verse 2 > Pre-chorus > Chorus > [Instrumental] > Bridge > Outro
So it’s not a weird construction, it just is aiming for musical ambience or “effect” rather than emotional substance. The same could be said about the UK entry “Embers,” but this uses a totally different style/genre to create its effect.

Natalia is too good for this song, the lyrics is cringeworthy and the whole context is vulgar and cheesy, can Kirkorov stay away from Moldova please

I know strictly speaking it’s not a masterpiece, and yikes for being connected to that Kirkorov creature… but I secretly love this song so much. Try to judge me kindly!

Well, I wasn’t expecting a masterpiece from Kirkorov, but this is…

On a brighter side, there’s a Drag Queen somewhere who’s going to have so much fun with this.

I dont get the hype for this one. It’s not bad for sure, but it’s definitely about 12 years too late.
The bit in the video too where the background dancers are upside down ice-creams with legs is also nightmare fuel. Typical production from the Kirkorov carnival of cringe.
Natalia and Moldova deserve so much better.
But hey, more than a few drinks on me and I’d probably bop to it I guess.

I was afraid she would pass off her song as a feminist track like Efendi did…

Looking forward to next year, when Moldova hopefully won’t be presented like Russia 2.0 anymore and will bring their own music forward again!

A country that gives us the Epic Sax Guy and “Dragostea din tei” doesn’t need help from the questionable Kirkorov and his crew. No country does.
