Daði og Gagnamagnið _10 Years_ — Iceland Eurovision 2021

Daði Freyr and his band Gagnamagnið had the whole internet dancing last summer with “Think About Things”, Iceland’s song for Eurovision 2020. Now, the troupe will represent Iceland once more with “10 Years”, a slice of pure pop-funk which Daði has dedicated to his wife.

Iceland in Eurovision 2021: Daði og Gagnamagnið— “10 years”

Daði Freyr Pétursson first gained notoriety in the Eurovision world in Iceland’s national final in 2017, defeating the odds with the self-penned “Is This Love?”. While polarizing, it managed to place the then-newcomer in second place behind eventual winner Svala.

Three years and a brand new band later — Gagnamagnið, the Berlin-based singer stormed to the top of Söngvakeppnin with “Think About Things”. The quirky retro-tune about his daughter quickly rose up the ranks to both become a favourite to win Eurovision 2020, as well as becoming a viral sensation across the globe. After the contest’s cancellation, the act was selected internally to compete in Eurovision 2021 once more.

Gagnamagnið consists of Daði’s sister Sigrún Birna Pétursdóttir, his wife Árný Fjóla Ásmundsdóttir, and friends Hulda Kristín Kolbrúnardóttir, Stefán Hannesson, and Jóhann Sigurður Jóhannsson. The name translates to “the amount of data”, more specifically the Icelandic word for “data plan”. As a whole, the ensemble is characterized by their strong visual identity: Teal green sweaters with pixel art portraits of themselves on them, which quickly became their signature across the internet.

What do the “10 Years” lyrics mean?

The self-penned song continues the linear story across all three of Daði’s Eurovision-related songs. It remains in the same genre of dance songs with a deep personal meaning underneath. While “Is This Love?” talked about love at first sight and “Think About Things” referred to his baby daughter, “10 Years” is a celebration of Daði’s long marriage to his wife Árný. It expresses how much he cherishes the time they have spent alongside one another. “We’ve been together for a decade now / Still everyday I’m loving you more”

The disco tune talks about how, no matter the length of a relationship, you can always find new things to fall in love with, and how a marriage can become an everlasting enjoyable experience. “How does it keep getting better / Everyday our love finds a new way to grow / The time we spend together / Simply feels good”

A relationship can make a person feel complete and realised, and Daði spares no words in expressing the fact. “I don’t wanna know what would have happened if I never had had your love / I didn’t become myself before I met you”

“10 Years” lyrics — Daði og Gagnamagnið (Iceland ESC 2021)

Written and composed by: Daði Freyr Pétursson

We’ve been together for a decade now
Still everyday I’m loving you more
If I could do it all again
I’d probably do it all the same as before

I don’t wanna know what would have happened
If I never had had your love
I didn’t become myself before I met you
I don’t wanna know what would have happened
If I never had felt your love
Everything about you I like

We started out so fast
Now we can take it slower
Love takes some time
Takes a little time so take a little time
As it ages like wine

How does it keep getting better?
Everyday our love finds a new way to grow
The time we spend together
Simply feels good
We got a good thing going

And just when I thought that my heart was full
I found places that I never explored
You’re so fascinating
I can’t remember the last time I was bored

I don’t wanna know what would have happened
If I never had had your love
I didn’t become myself before I met you
I don’t wanna know what would have happened
I I never had felt your love
Everything about you I like

How does it keep getting better
Everyday our love finds a new way to grow
The time we spend together
Simply feels good

We got a good thing going
How does it keep getting better
Everyday our love finds a new way to grow
The time we spend together
Simply feels good
We got a good thing going

This song was a big disappointment. They just tried to do the same thing as last year but it is a worse version. Same choreography same outfits same everything. I’m not sure they would qualify if they were in SF1 and didn’t have the hype from last year.

My vote definitely goes to Iceland this year. I absolutely love everything about this song, last years song and the whole concept of Daði Freyr & Gagnamagnið. They must beat all the “hot” babes and guys from the other countries.

The lyrics for this one are lovely, but I must say I miss here the cleverness of those in “Thinking About Things”, which is possibly my favorite song ever that someone has written with their kids in mind. Both have the quality of being universal though. I like this family man appeal of Dadi.

Love the song. But can’t figure out how the video is relevant to the lyrics??? Will the essence of the video be the stage performance too??

I really hope Iceland will do well this year. At the very, very least better than those leatherfaced clowns of 2019
