Eurovision 31 March

Every weekday, between now and the contest in May, the team from wiwibloggs will round up the latest titbits from the world of Eurovision 2021. We trawl through Instagram, Twitter and elsewhere so that y’all don’t have to. In today’s Daily Digest France’s Barbara Pravi does an acoustic version of “Voilà”, The Roop perform a medley of their Eurovision bops and Greece’s Stefania reveals her favourite Dutch entry. But first…

Eurovision news: 31 March

Hurricane score the most-viewed Eurovision video for March

After what seems like an eternity, Russia’s 2020 Eurovision entry “Uno” has been knocked off the number one spot in the official Eurovision channel’s monthly countdown of its most viewed videos. And Serbia’s Hurricane are the ones to take the crown with “Loco Loco”. The rest of the top ten is: 10.Croatia 2021, 9. Netherlands 2019, 8. Switzerland 2021, 7. Malta 2021, 6. Norway 2009, 5. Ukraine 2019, 4. Azerbaijan 2021, 3. Russia 2020 and 2. Russia 2021. It should be noted that the video ranking only includes uploads to the official Eurovision channel. Hence why there’s no sign of Italy’s Måneskin who have racked up 13.4 million views on their own channel. By comparison, the Hurricane video has 6.3 million views.

Barbara Pravi performs “Voilà” on Le Grand Oral

On Tuesday, Eurovision 2021 fan favourite Barbara Pravi appeared on France 2’s Le Grand Oral. The show hosted by Leïla Kaddour-Boudadi aims to find France’s best public speakers. Barbara performed an acoustic version of her Eurovision song “Voilà”, accompanied by Agnès Imbault on piano. She stunned the studio audience and proved that she can create a magically intimate atmosphere even with minimal staging and accompaniment. “Every time I sing it, I’m in a trance”, the chanteuse told Purebreak Charts. “What I really want is to write stories that reach you.” (Oliver A)

Daði Freyr talks to Russia’s Eurovision commentator Yana Churikova

Iceland’s Daði Freyr talked all things Eurovision with Russia’s commentator Yana Churikova. Topics touched upon include his song for Eurovision 2021, his thoughts on the other entries and the recent Netflix Eurovision movie. Yana is particularly chuffed when Daði reveals that he gets a lot of inspiration from Little Big — the band that was due to represent Russia at Eurovision 2021.

The Roop perform “On Fire” and “Discoteque” at Lithuanian music awards

We’ve already reported on The Roop’s big success at last weekend’s M.A.M.A music award show in Lithuania. Not only did the group scoop several of the main gongs, but they also performed a medley of both their Eurovision songs — “On Fire” and “Discoteque”.

Additional contributions from Oliver and Renske

I’ve just watched this Roop medley and was wondering why augmented reality staging is prohibited in Eurovision?! Looks fantastic in my opinion.

I’ve read that virtual and augmented reality is not allowed. But that was for live-on-tape recordings, so I’m confused.

We are on the same page Natalie…I found many songs super beautiful this year…The French ballad is gorgeous, light like a butterfly, but for a francophone person, I believe they heard many similar, better performed or more powerful songs many times before. For example, Natasha St-Pier – Je N’ai Que Mon Ame or our divine Patricia Kaas…it was another league of professionalism….Malta’s song is powerful, catchy and hooky; however, it is like a cocktail of many other songs, lacks integrity and uniqueness…Unfortunately, a great voice and Diva’s presence is not enough…The representative of Switzerland is also amazing this year, but… Read more »

Well this is my subjective opinion…I love Barbara, the melody of this song is incredible; however, I heard it many times before…and for me she doesn’t have this quality of a diva…I don’t know much about her career either to be honest, but she reminds more a young starting artist…

No matter how early you reveal the song, MOST Eurovision viewers will be hearing the songs for the first time in May.

I agree Dear, but I guess this one is more about a momentum, viral moment, a buzz created in the air, gentle pleasant addiction with no side effects lol… when adults do not have other choice, because their children say – ‘VOTE, now’…they managed to create this vibe for On Fire, and fingers crossed they will do the same with Discotheque…

I think Voilà and Barbara are as professionnal as the two other entries you’re talking about. If not more 🙂

according to my subjective perception, not even close to the two other mentioned entries’ league…I still hope she will be top 10 this year, taking into account the track record of France over the last decade

I somewhat agree that revealing song early wasn’t the best strategy. Though I love the song in every bit 🙂 I put my hopes that the roop will invest in staging and create the whole new feeling about the song. Though not too sure if being first in the semi final 1 is the best placing for them. Destiny has a fantastic vocal, no doubt, but I don’t find the song as unique. Barbaras song is unfortunately completely not my cup of tea, so I will abstain from commenting.

What a terrible bad faith ! Barbara Pravi is a wonderful professional interpreter and as much as Natasha or Patricia. Just because you have other favorites in this Eurovision doesn’t excuse your “opinion”. Barbara is a deep, moving and talented singer. Definitely.

Nothing against “Arcade” but Netherlands has a fantastic catalogue of songs ever since the inception of the contest so claiming that “Arcade” is her favorite Dutch entry ever is reduntant if she doesn’t know anything else.

It’s funny to see how wiwi and others esc medias ignore totally what’s happened and what is happening in Spain, between Telecinco, Gjon’s tears feeling himself an used condom and Barbara Pravi in the middle of that….

Lol, really? OK so let’s do this, the producer of a show on Telecinco is an eurofan it seems so Telecinco has said to Gjon that they have chosen his song for their docu show because according to Gjon he was unique for them and the song special, they even invited him to perform live in Spain and so to promote his song, it was cool for him he was 1st on itunes and Shazam in Spain but during the 2nd show the producers have used Barbara’s song to open the show, Gjon was not happy and on his instagram… Read more »

and forcefully a little bit in Switzerland and France too. That’s why I’m surprised that some esc related medias remain quiet about it.

And to add to this, some spanish eurofans complain because they don’t understand why they don’t use Blas song too, to give a little boost to the spanish entry.

Thank you Esc addict for the explanation. Much appreciated!
Personally I love both Gjon and Barbara’s entries (they’re my 1st and 3rd place respectively), so I’m really not sure how to fully process this drama lol. Personally though, I don’t get why Gjon lashed out like that. If the producers of the show felt that “Voila” should also be incorporated, then I don’t see the problem tbh, as long as they keep their end of their promise to Gjon by playing his song.

You’re welcome! Yeah it’s exactly my thoughts, there’s place for everybody, these songs can be complementary to illustrate the same documentary.

Some Spanish media are reporting that Barbara Pravi is performing Sunday on the next broadcast while Gjon apologized for overreacting and Tout l’univers is still the main theme song, so I guess all is well for the time being.

I have a really good feeling about France. Every single performance, she’s totally nailed. She has a vibe about her. If France takes it, that’ll only leave poor Spain as the country that’s won multiple times and has had to wait an excruciatingly long time to win again.

Also, add Stefania to the very interesting list of singers who represented another country while competing at a contest hosted in their own country (a list that includes the likes of Ireen Sheer, Elisabeth Andreassen on a technicality, Daniel Kovac, Lise Haavik, Plastic Bertrand, anybody who’s represented Monaco in France more or less, and David Alexandre Winter)

I imagine how peaceful the French delegation is feeling this year. The song was well received by fans in France and internationally (it’s quite something for a chanson to be that well ranked in online polls where the audience normally rejects traditional entries), Barbara is a flawless performer and they already have a tested and approved staging. Time will tell how well they’ll do in Rotterdam, but they did their homework very well this time.

It’s a total 180 from last year, when the song was almost universally panned, especially by the French. Barbara doesn’t have to perform at the Eiffel Tower for us to know this is authentically French.

France gets the “Most Improved” award for sure. From my last last year to top three this year. But for once, my number one country (and artist!) has stayed exactly the same two years in a row. As far as I recall, for a non-vintage year, at least.
