Eurovision 1 April

Every weekday, between now and the contest in May, the team from wiwibloggs will round up the latest titbits from the world of Eurovision 2021. We trawl through Instagram, Twitter and elsewhere so that y’all don’t have to. In today’s Daily Digest Måns Zelmerlöw travels to Rotterdam, Duncan Laurence confirms he won’t sing a new single at Eurovision and Barbara Pravi prepares for Spain. But first…

Eurovision news: 1 April

Daði Freyr launches virtual tour

The pandemic might have cancelled a lot of tour and travel plans — but that’s not stopping Daði Freyr from giving the fans what they want. Using the power of augmented reality, Iceland’s Eurovision superstar is embarking on a virtual worldwide tour. Starting in the Icelandic capital Reykjavík, the “Think About Things” hitmaker will perform all over the world with stops in Manchester, Buenos Aires and Tokyo.

Whether it’s from the comfort of your own home or on the peak of a mountain, fans can stream the special concert via mobile and project the Gagnamagnið frontman into any environment imaginable. The possibilities are endless! Check out when Daði is performing near you and scan the QR code over at Road2Rotterdam.com. At the end of the tour, the concert will be available worldwide. (Oliver A)

Jeangu Macrooy celebrates milestones for his community

On 1 April 2021, it was twenty years since gay marriage was legalised in the Netherlands. To celebrate that, Jeangu — an advocate of LGBTQ+ rights in his birth country Suriname — appeared in the documentary Let Love Rule on NPO3. He also congratulated Dutch MP Sylvana Simons on winning a seat in the Dutch parliament. Simons is the first Dutch party leader of Surinamese descent and the first black female party leader (Renske).

Blas Cantó to perform “custom” concert in April

On Thursday 8 April, Spain’s Eurovision 2021 star will perform in a special “custom” concert, as part of a collaboration with Imagin. The “Voy a quedarme” singer announced the concert today on his Instagram story, encouraging fans to get involved and tell him what they wanted to see at the show. Fans will be able to vote in a series of polls to customise the show to their liking. Everything from the styling of Blas’ clothes to the song he’ll close the show with is in the hands of the fans. (Oliver A)

Måns Zelmerlöw travels to Rotterdam

Swedish Eurovision 2015 champion Måns Zelmerlöw is currently in Rotterdam. On his Instagram story, the “Heroes” singer shared images of a rooftop stage at night, complete with bright lights and a smoke machine. It’s yet to be confirmed exactly what he’s working on, but it’s very likely to be the recording of his Eurovision interval performance.

In March, Dutch broadcasters AVROTROS and NPO confirmed that the Måns would appear as one of the interval acts during the Eurovision 2021 grand final. Amongst other Eurovision legends like Lenny Kuhr, Helena Paparizou and Lordi, he will “Rock the Roof” with a special performance from the rooftop of Rotterdam’s Hotel New York. For now, we’ll have to wait and see what Måns and co have in store for us. (Oliver A)

Natalia Gordienko gets Russian breakthrough award

Fans will have noticed that Moldova’s Natalia Gordienko has been spending a lot of time in Russia recently. And it appears that her hard work is paying off. Just a few short weeks after the glitzy showbiz launch of her Eurovision entry “Sugar”, Natalia has been awarded ‘Breakthrough Of The Year’ by MODA Topical magazine. “My debut award will give me the impetus and strength to conquer the European musical Olympus in Rotterdam”, she writes in a celebratory Instagram post.

Barbara Pravi to perform in Spain

Following in the footsteps of Switzerland’s Gjon’s Tears, Barbara Pravi will also sing her Eurovision song live in Spain. She’ll perform this Sunday following the latest episode of Telecinco’s documentary series Rocío. The broadcaster has already been using “Voilà” to promote the upcoming instalment. (Jordi)

Eurovision and Glastonbury collide

Eurovision and Glastonbury are two of the biggest annual events on the music calendar. But the two rarely cross paths. However, the organisers behind the iconic British festival have confirmed that the usual event will be replaced with a special livestream. And instead of its normal June date, the concert will air on 22 May — the same night as the Eurovision final. However, all’s good between both parties, as evidenced by this Twitter exchange.

Duncan Laurence will perform a new song… not a new single at Eurovision 2021

Earlier this week, it was confirmed that the reigning Eurovision champ Duncan Laurence will perform during both semi-final one and the grand final of this year’s contest. He’s due to perform a new song as part of his final set. Many assumed that this would be a new single, including ourselves. However, Duncan set us straight on Twitter. The new song will not be a single.

Additional contributions from Renske, Oliver and Jordi

Will you watch Barbara’s Spanish performance? Is Glastonbury wise to go up against Eurovision? Let us know in the comments.

I’m sorry but I don’t understand .

If he is singing a new song , but it’s not a single , so he’s singing a double (like a mash-up song ) ? Is that what this means ?

There are singles and songs released as part of the albums. What you hear in radio are singles and songs promoting albums

Ah , as in standalone release vs one released as part of an album ?

So they’re both basically songs but released differently

Are we sure Duncan not performing a single on Eurovision is not just April Fools? It just does not make sense tbh. Why would you perform on the biggest stage in the world and do a random song from a new album or EP?

Isn’t Sylvana Simons from the party DENK?

Nevermind. She left DENK in 2016..

No DENK is lead by Farid Azarkan and Tunahan Kuzu and is basically the Dutch akp party. They say they fight against discrimination but they mostly fight for islamic rights in the netherlands + other party members have been ditched for having too ‘progressive views’ which their followers didn’t like in the past.

Sylvana simons is Party leader of her own created ‘bij1’ and therefore now has a seat in the house of representatives. She focuses more on equality in general and appeals more to young people of color and women

Kirkorov has a LONG and storied history of being a perv, and of being incredibly disrespectful of and verbally abusive toward women. I wish the guy would just go away.

The song which Duncan will sing could be Ice Age, Lighthouse or another song of the non-released album he had in 2019.

According to https://www.babybytes.nl/namen/meisjes/Natalia, Natalia means “being born on Christmas day” (Natalia is born on December 11th, which is really close to Christmas day). It’s just funny how Kirkorov has a beard and white hair like Santa. The Russian breakthrough Award seems like an early Christmas present now.

For those who think I like Kirkorov, I do not like him. I personally just think it is funny how the meaning of Natalia’s name resembles what’s happening with her and Kirkorov right now. That’s why I made this comment.

I’m defending no one in this conversation, but racism is everywhere. In Africa and South America you will experience racial discrimination when you are white. In America, Europe and Asia, you will experience racial discrimination when you are black. Asians get the most racial discrimination yet it is discussed the least on social media and the news. You are delusional if you think only black people can be affected by racism.

Definitely true. That’s also why I can’t take the Black Lives Matter movement seriously. The creator of that movement should’ve called it Black Lives Matter Too or All Lives Matter. Out of these 2, I think Black Lives Matter Too is the better one. Black Lives Matter sounds like that only black lives matter even though that was obviously not the intention. With Black Lives Matter Too and All Lives Matter you show you are battling for equality.

That’s not a good enough reason to not take them seriously. Sometimes the comments and upvotes here make me very sad.

How is it not enough? Black Lives Matter in the USA battles for race equality yet they are causing the opposite.

Btw, were @Daan and @Reus’ comments already removed when you commented?

Thankyou. I was once blocked by this site’s moderators for saying that I believe applying the same treatment to people irrespective of skin color is not racist . Atleast people here are supporting you with likes.

I fully endorse that all movements are based on “equal treatment “. and not preferential treatment because they were discriminated in the past.

Are there any concerns over the French delegation travelling to Rotterdam considering the current Covid situation in France?

I feel between Europe at least (even though there are many many covid cases) the situation is more controllable. The biggest problem would be for North Macedonian, Albanian, Moldovan and, especially Russian delegation. By the time the weather is going to improve till May, the cases will be more limited hopefully and with vaccinations this is going to be limited

It is a 50% opening 50% not opening as how I see it. Duncan Laurence is the actual opening act, but The Roop is the opening act based of the running order of contestants (what you obviously already knew).
