Davina Michelle Thekla Reuten Eurovision 2021 Semi-Final One

Grab your towels because things are about to get wet! Eurovision 2021 organisers have announced that Dutch popstar Davina Michelle and actress Thekla Reuten will perform a water-inspired interval act during semi-final one on Tuesday 18 May.

Davina will sing “The Power of Water”. The Netherlands has a long history with water and wants to showcase this story during Eurovision. H20 will be central to the performance and the power of the water will be visible.

Head of Show Gerben Bakker explains why the theme of water is inextricably linked to the Netherlands. “For centuries we Dutch have had a relationship with water that is unique in the world. We fought against it, but we can’t live without it. In the act, we tell the story of the power of the water and the resilience that we all have”.

For this unique one-off act, recordings have been made with Davina Michelle on the Delta Works. The Delta Works is a defence system in the Netherlands, to protect against high water from the sea. The music for this act has been specially composed by Davina Michelle and her writing team. The most modern techniques are used for the act and a world of water is created in Rotterdam Ahoy by means of augmented reality.

Thekla Reuten, who has appeared in movies such as In Bruges with Colin Farrell and The American with George Clooney, will play a role symbolising the power of the water.

Davina Michelle tells how she was approached by the Eurovision organisation two years ago: “I was approached by the Eurovision team with the concept that focuses on the story of water. Water connects, is resilient and, is an inseparable part of the Netherlands. Together with Eurovision, we have worked on a unique act in which these characteristics are central. I wrote the song “Sweet Water” in which water is used as a metaphor for something that connects people in the world. We are all different lives and different environments, but we all need water, and it brings us all together. I can’t wait to show you what we’ve been working on together for so long.”

Head of Show Gerben Bakker is happy with the collaboration between Davina and Thekla. “Davina Michelle is one of the greatest talents of the moment. When we shared our plan with her, she immediately became very enthusiastic. Thekla Reuten is given a unique role and symbolizes the power of the water. She is also one of the tops in the Netherlands. There has already been plenty of rehearsals in recent months and it promises to be special. ”

Davina was bound to be involved in some way… it’s just odd that she wrote a song specifically for this when she has repeatedly turned down the opportunity to represent the Netherlands at Eurovision. Where’s the fun in entering a song that doesn’t even compete for the prize?

She said that she didn’t feel ready yet to compete. We will definitely see her representing the Netherlands in the near future

I would have guessed Carice Van Houten to be in Eurovision in some way, but Thekla is a good choice too. I loved her in In Bruges.
And Davina Michelle… that was just inevitable. 😀 Duurt Te Lang is still often played here.

Yees! I have been dreaming about seeing Davina Michelle being part of Eurovision in some way or another. I think it’s very cool to see her being part of the interval acts this year and maybe she will even be the representative for the Netherlands in the future!

Sounds promising.. Can’t wait! The struggle is real over here with water but we made it our friend! Excited to see what it’ll be on the night and glad Davina is a part of it..

I like how they’re inviting local stars that are actually Dutch and not Americans like Justin Timberlake and Madonna. I hate when countries are pandering to American public! Great job the Netherlands!
