The “Fallen Angel” has risen — and he’s grabbed one of the biggest awards in the Norwegian music industry on his way up.
Yes, TIX — the winner of Melodi Grand Prix 2021 and Norway’s Eurovision 2021 star — has nabbed the Årets Spellemann — that’s the Norwegian Grammy for Artist of the Year. He’s in some very good company. Past winners include Sigrid, Alan Walker, Marcus & Martinus and Kygo.
The award is announced without any nominations beforehand, so the winner is inevitably very surprised. During the awards show, TIX — real name Andreas Haukeland — seemed to be completely taken aback. His brother was tasked with reading the jury’s announcement — but neither of them knew what was coming. Their surprise was super endearing.
TIX wins Årets Spellemann — Norwegian Grammy for Artist of the Year
Here is a translation of the jury’s statement:
“TIX hit the music scene in 2015. His songs have become hits for himself and others. In 2020, a year like no other, TIX really won the hearts of all Norwegians. After two concerts, sold out in record time, his song ‘Karantene’ became the very soundtrack of the pandemic. He lightened the mood of the nation in heavy times. Despite all the cancellations, he made us all feel like partying.”
“The Norwegian Grammy winner for Artist of the Year had two national No 1 hits in 2020. Both songs received ‘Song of the Year’ nominations. His songs were streamed more than 70 million times in 2020. This made him the most played musician in Norway. The Norwegian Grammy Artis of the year is TIX!”
TIX’s immediate response was:
“Being recognized by the fans but now also by other musicians, means a lot to me. I started out making graduation party tunes, since that was my only way into the industry. And I have stayed true to my party tune concept ever since, never mind the critics. I would also like to point out that I haven’t been making music all on my own. There’s my producer, Erik Smaaland, and I’ve recorded with some amazing people.”
