Lady Gaga at Eurovision 2021? Organisers respond to rumours

Many international stars have found their way to the Eurovision stage over recent years — Justin Timberlake in 2016 and then Madonna in 2019. And now new rumours sparked on social media have suggested that Lady Gaga will perform at Eurovision 2021 in Rotterdam.

Well sorry guys: The bubble has already been burst. According to song contest organisers, the “Rain On Me” singer will not make her Eurovision debut this year.

Lady Gaga at Eurovision 2021? Organisers respond to rumours

On Saturday 24 April, Twitter went into a frenzy when rumours began circulating that international superstar and pop legend Lady Gaga would perform as an interval act during the Eurovision 2021 grand final.

But organisers were quick to respond. Sietse Bakker, Executive Supervisor of the Eurovision Song Contest 2021, shut down the rumours of Lady Gaga’s appearance. “Not that we know of”, he wrote in response to wiwiblogger Esma, who asked aloud whether Miss Gaga would be involved in Eurovision.

How did the rumours start?

The rumours began to swirl on social media when eagle-eyed fans noticed an interesting date on the New Yorker’s tour schedule. According to Google, the Chromatica songstress is set to perform at the Rotterdam Ahoy on Saturday 22 May 2021. As it happens, that’s the same date as the Eurovision 2021 grand final.

The exact source of this information is unknown. Some fans have suggested this could be a rescheduling error, after many of Gaga’s Chromatica Ball tour dates were postponed in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, Google is known to auto-generate information from many sources, so this cannot be trusted as legitimate until confirmed by organisers.

But with Sietse’s tweet, that doesn’t look set to happen any time soon.

With the Eurovision 2021 interval already jam-packed with performances from Eurovision alumni and local Dutch talent, it seems unlikely that any extra big names will be added to the billing. Additionally, ongoing coronavirus restrictions limit the American star’s European travel options.

This isn’t the first time Lady Gaga has been rumoured to perform at Eurovision. In 2017, reports suggested that show organisers approached Lady Gaga to perform at Eurovision in Kyiv, Ukraine. But they supposedly cancelled her appearance after learning the “Born This Way” hitmaker required a 100,000-200,000 US dollar rider to confirm the booking.

Lady Gaga is actually already in Italy filming a movie on the homicide of Maurizio Gucci so it’s not impossible for her to go to Rotterdam, travelling through Europe is not that difficult

“Additionally, ongoing coronavirus restrictions limit the American star’s European travel options.”
They don’t, performers get an exceptions. If people from Azerbaijan, Israel or UK can perform, so could someone from the US.

That being said, I’m glad the rumour is false. As much as I like some of her music, let’s not americanise the show, it never worked well.

I thought Justin Timberlake and Madonna proved why we don’t need an American half time show

Justin was fine. Out of the place but ok. Madonna was a joke. Not only she was awful but they spent waaaaay to much time on her.

I guess if Lady Gaga really was to perform, Flo Rida would go berzerk, lol.

Naomi and Kobe…Uhhh Shallow is literally one of the biggest hits of all time and one of the most streamed tracks ever. Have you been living in a cave? Not to mention Rain on me was a huge hit too. She’s the most well known pop star and actress with every generation. Imagine coming for Gaga.

It would be really unfair for other contestants if Lady Gaga performed cuz she’s already representing Cyprus this year.

If an American artist can’t perform due to restrictions, why not get a European artist (or artists that live in Europe)?

My top picks would be Björk, Robyn, Shakira, Dua Lipa, Little Mix, Sam Smith and Adele.

Please no, not another american Pop icon that gets millions for a few minutes. Eurovision is for me to discover new european artists. To them the Eurovision stage belongs.

I love Lady Gaga but I didnt even know there was a rumour going on.
That said, it would be nice to have Mother Monster gracing the stage. Cause her theatrical over the top antics would fit the ESC perfect

I love Gaga, but I didn’t even know that rumor was a thing.
As much as I love her, I’m glad they are sticking to Dutch acts. After all, the Netherlands is hosting, not USA.
Not into the whole American interval act thing. They don’t know what Eurovision is all about and it just feels like some plot by the EBU to eventually get United States participating, which I’m definitely not in approval of.

Lady Gaga is a Really Good Artist. There is One Major Issue she would command a Huge Appearance Fee which could be used to create an even Better Eurovision Song Contest.I Feel this Opportunity should be given to an Up and Coming Artist within the European Circle of Friends or a Previous Eurovision Contestant.

I really like Lady Gaga, but I wouldn’t take a single more interval act to make the final any longer! The Eurovision final was around 4 hours in 2019 and that’s a bit too much, the flag parade is something I’d leave right away since it’s not giving much to the show.

Imagine an actual participant like Montaigne can’t travel to Rotterdam due to the long distance but then an interval act from The US was rumored to go to Rotterdam… lol!

So Cyprus does the song melody AND the look from Lady Gaga’s album cover. LOL. The level of ridiculous is OMAGA. Also, Lady Gaga would never write such awful lyrics.
