Destiny Je Me Casse Malta Eurovision 2021

In recent years, more and more countries have set their hopes for Eurovision glory on an internal selection process. In 2021, this number is higher than ever. After last year’s cancellation, many countries simply invited their 2020 acts to return and selected their songs internally.

A total of 25 Eurovision 2021 songs have been chosen internally, up from 17 in 2020. A few weeks ago, we asked our readers to vote for their favourite. And the results are in!

Poll results: Destiny’s “Je Me Casse” is your favourite internally selected song for Eurovision 2021

The results are now in — and it was Malta’s Destiny who came out on top. A massive 8,381 votes were cast. In the end, Destiny topped the ranking with “Je Me Casse”. The Maltese singer earned 11.1% of the votes, which is 930 votes to be precise.

Ever since its release in early March, “Je Me Casse” has been on everyone’s lips. It’s a firm fan favourite and currently tops the bookies’ odds. Should Destiny carry this momentum all the way to victory, she will become the first person to win both Junior Eurovision and Eurovision.

In second place is Switzerland’s Gjon’s Tears with “Tout l’univers”, which received 781 votes (9.32%). Taking home the bronze medal is San Marino’s Senhit, who secured 613 votes (7.31%) for “Adrenalina”. Rounding out the top five are Greece’s Stefania and Romania’s Roxen.

At this rate if Malta ends up getting a slightly decent result in May people here would say the delegation bought SIM cards and corrupted the international juries. I’m calling it.

Honestly, I think Lithuania will win the televote because it’s catchy, entertaining, simple and overall amazing for a non ESC fan. But bc of juries I see Switzerland or Malta winning, they’re jury-friendly and will get a lot of televote points.

When I saw the number of comments on this article before I clicked into it, I was predicting who I’d see. Usual suspects again on both sides (for and against) being toxic over Malta. Y’all are doing Destiny no favours by the way. Those of you saying awful things about her, grow up, she’s 18 and probably more maturity in her big toe than some of y’all And then there’s those commenting on everyone who isn’t supporting Malta, ramming it into their faces, again grow tf up and stop obsessing. I don’t hate Malta’s song. But I think there are better songs in this year’s Eurovision. Destiny has a catchy song, but as a whole, I don’t like this American style of singing somehow, please don’t get me wrong, It’s just my opinion. I think she had better song last year. (By the way, Je me casse was played on the Slovak radio station RTVS and they didn’t know it was intended for Eurovision)

Speaking of the few people giving most of the time negative and unvalid comments about Malta, here’s one of em.

The Roop are still contenders for the win, you know ? No need to feel threatened by Destiny and always comparing both of those artists. They’re both equally excellent and have strong entries.

Well, I don’t like the song for a bunch of reasons. I (!) won’t (!) say that they bought views or something, I don’t know, but for me it’s overhyped. The song has nothing Maltese, it’s a typical Swedish bop. Lyrics are boring, tune is too repetitive for me, it’s aesthetics are too similar with Netta’s “Toy”. The singer’s vocal delivery is cool, but the track itself doesn’t give her a chance to show it the best way. Actually, I think, bops this year are awfully tasteless. Sorry. With respect to people with other opinion, ready to discuss this topic… Read more »

There are very, very few songs which have anything local in them.
There is nothing really nothing that is similar to Netta’s Toy, except for the message. If you can manage just to listen to the melody you can see how different the two compositions are.

Yep. Also define ‘there’s nothing Maltese in it’ and why does that matter to you ? The ESC isn’t an ‘exclusively local-made’ song contest and has never been before. Luxemburg and Monaco entries can tell you that.

I don’t like it for two important reasons: 1). It turns into competition between different Swedish songwriters, so there’s no real struggle between countries. 2). It kills genre diversity. Honestly, ESC has a big problem with it and the Swedish factory is like a gun into the diversity’s face.

Ellen

That’s fair of you to think that way.

Personally, I don’t think ‘Je Me Casse’ is killing the ESC genre diversity this year. It brings something fresh to the table cause it’s an electro-swing-pop-soul song. Something never done brung to ESC before. It’s definitely something you won’t see at the Melodifestivalen since there are a kind of ‘formatage’ in the entries selected for competing in.

Ellen, it wasn’t I who said that there is nothing Maltese in this composition. I was in fact answering Eugenie who made such an observation. Of course I do not judge a song by how much it is locally made. I judge a song by what it is and not by its ethic flavour. I totally agree with you and I think you misunderstood my comment. I was underlining the fact that very few songs are locally made or produced and those which have some ethnic sounds in them are imported ones (for example the Netherlands and San Marino).

Well, for me it’s a big problem with contemporary ESC. I’m not in like with this so-called American pop attack. It’s pretty disgusting. We got a lot of more local entries(Ana Socklic, Go_A, Manizha) that have less hype. It’s a bit disappointing. When I said “aesthetics” I didn’t mean tune. I meant public image, PR strategy, lyrics and agressive vocal delivery. That’s the whole point.

Reply to  Eugenie

I am sorry but I cannot agree with you. Destiny and Netta have two completely different identities, styles and images. You can see it in the way they dress, put on a show and sing. PR strategy is always PR strategy. One promotes one’s own song so that comment is superfluous. The lyrics are also quite different although they try to push forward a similar message. Netta’s way of presenting her song was playful, bordering on the childlike, Destiny’s is a bit more “womanly” and mature. Even the delivery is very evidently dissimilar. There is nothing aggressive about them. Netta’s… Read more »

Destiny and Netta have one veeeeery similiar narative. And that is a feminist meaning of the song in a typical no brain bop, and if you look at the lyrics you realise it’s bs and a pathetic way to get positive reactions from the public. That’s why you see a lot of ‘yasss queenn’…. And one more reason, being overrated af.

The emphasis on the ‘very’ already shows that the rest of your comment will be biased and provocative.

Plus, define ‘no brain bop’. I don’t really get that expression.

And above all — and that’s logical to think about that — who in this world creates on purpose song lyrics only to get negative reactions from the public ? I mean except for the Belarussian acts this year… Who does that ? What you’re reproaching about Malta can be applied to the other entries this year. Example. *Omg! The Swiss entry has been exclusively written in french to get positive reactions from the public. So pathetic!* See how dumb that example of mine is. Now think about yours.

I won’t lie, I am surprised Malta is first, not because its not my personal favorite but rather the reaction I see for maltas song in pretty much every comment section.
Although this song has its fans, it’s also one of the frontrunners with the most negative feedback. This is both in relation to the song itself and who wrote or produced the song.

Isn’t it obvious? If a country is one of the fan-favorites to win according to the betting odds – it’s obvious that people who want their favorite to win will negatively comment against the country/singer which is at the top, right? I love Switzerland’s song and I’ve seen negative comments too. Very few people will comment if there’s an article about a country who’s currently at the bottom 10. People are betting for Malta to win. Whether people agree or not, that’s a different story. All those betting – will vote, otherwise they will lose money. That’s how odds work… Read more »

Then you have to direct your question to those who are commenting against Destiny and Malta. If you look at the comments, most of them do not give any reason. If Destiny was the 2nd or 3rd favorite, most of these people commenting would not bother to do so. But she’s at the top for now, so anything to push that down.

Negative comments will pour even more on Sunday once rehearsals begin. Destiny shines when she sings live!

Truth and facts. It’s most of the time the same few people that are giving negative feedbacks about ‘Je Me Casse’. And few of them, like Im so fab, are out of context when they’re linking ‘Je Me Casse’ success to Destiny’s weight or they’re mocking at her clothes. They have no valid reasons to dislike the song. You don’t necessarily need one to dislike a song, sometimes you can’t explain it, but the arguments given by some people here are… I don’t even have an adjective to describe em. I mean… Comments about Israel 2018 and Russia 2016 when they were leading the odds were way harsher and indecent than Malta 2021. So I’m kinda glad the island isn’t receiving that much negative critiques and a lot of positive stuff. It’s good sign for the faith of ‘Je Me Casse’ at the ESC.

Personally, it has never been about her vocals. We all know she’s amazing vocally. I however don’t like the song because the song itself is beneath her. To me, it’s not impressive, the message is anthemic and powerful but the song itself isn’t powerful. I don’t love the composition. I much preferred her entry last year but honestly, if I didn’t hear her 2020 entry, I still don’t think I’d like this song.

I think most people who aren’t a fan of malta’s entry this year is very much directing the dislike towards the song.

This is the beauty of music though, as I love the song for the exact opposite reasons. To me, it’s powerful, fun, memorable, has a catchy tune, the composition and the instruments are amazing and her voice is impeccable.

Personally, I wouldn’t want Destiny to showcase her voice throughout the entire song and belt out all the way through because that would be terrible and boring. JMC showcases the right vocals at the right time. The bridge of the song will be a moment on stage.

I agree with what you said that being first in the odds makes people more aware of the country/song, THOUGH the only reason it’s first in the betting odds, is because people are betting for Malta to win. So, the ‘spotlight’ which Malta and Destiny are getting is 100% genuine. That means people like it enough to think it may possibly win and thus, fork out money. Clearly, not enough people think that other countries may win as long as Malta’s at the top. This may change in a week’s time of course or, the odds completely fail to guess… Read more »
