The Roop Eurovision 2021

The Wiwi Jury — our in-house team of music unprofessionals — is reviewing and rating the 39 competing songs in Eurovision 2021. Next we take a look at Lithuania where The Roop has “Discoteque”. Did it make us want to dance alone? Read on to find out!

The Roop – “Discoteque”

“Discoteque” reviews

Julian: The Roop came back with a banger this year! “Discoteque” is about dancing alone at home and oh Lord I’m dancing! I love the beat, I love the vibe and what I love most is that The Roop is mixing up typical modern pop with their authenticness and weirdness which makes the song so individual. Also, they have shown us through their national final that they have such a good live presence! “Discoteque” could easily get into the top ten this year. Well done!

Score: 8.5

Lauren: Once again, The Roop have failed to get to me, all the while getting to everybody else around me. The song is better, more thought-out and professional than their 2020 entry, but in an overall scope of everything this song is, it has no statement other than “this is what gets stuck in people’s heads”. I’m not scared of this winning Eurovision in May, and you can quote me on this, but I’m still disappointed in the Eurovision fan community for the overwhelmingly positive reaction this track received. I should mention I think the song isn’t all bad, but it’s definitely lacking in identity.

Score: 3

Luis: Let me put this out first: it won’t be a surprise if “Discoteque” is the first and last song heard at Eurovision 2021. The Roop have managed to match their previous attempt going in a different and striking direction. Everything from the looks to the moves is absolutely remarkable. Plus, they keep the element of surprise: while some arguably direct competitors have gained attention in many countries, The Roop will be something totally new and different for many. Vilnius 2022 is very credible possibility.

Score: 9.5

Pablo: Lightning didn’t strike twice with this one. It’s more like a meteor hit the spot where the lightning first struck! “Discoteque” is incredible, let’s be frank. An artistic display in a really fun package, The Roop take what could be cliché (enclosed at home quarantined) and delivers it in a way no one would have thought of doing so. The end result is brilliant. Crazy, but refined; wacky, but arresting. This is a group who knows who they are and what they want to serve, and what they serve might want to make people go to take a look at Vilnius. One never knows.

Score: 10

Renske: Upon its first listen, “Discoteque” is addictive and appealing. It’s not a clone of its predecessor “On Fire” and even after all these months, “Discoteque” is not getting boring. The Roop have managed to stay true to themselves without getting predictable or tacky. The lyrics are immediately understandable and fit in our current world. That The Roop manages to tell you to be confident, even when you feel insecure, and still bring a funny and danceable track is amazing. While a lot of songs fall apart due to extensive symbolism, “Discoteque” scores with strong simplicity.

Score: 8.5

The Roop – “Discoteque” rankings

In the Wiwi Jury we have 24 jurors but only have room for five reviews. The remaining scores are below:

Lucy: 7.5

Natalie: 8

I think it’s a very unique song which stands off and doesn’t replicate any other song..unlike others in top 5.

Every moment of the song and the staging is designed to win votes. That’s what you have to do these days. What makes The Roop even more powerful is that this was all in place for all to see three months ago. While we still haven’t seen some other acts perform live even once, Lithuania are already fine-tuning.

Same. I get not liking a song, but being “disappointed with the fan community for liking it” is a bit pretentious, innit?

The Roop has made it again. I like “On Fire”, but I think I prefer this one. For some reason this one isn’t receiving that much approval but, in my opinion, it has the right level of quirkiness without turning it into a novelty act. In this rather weak year, they have a lot of chances to stand out. Lithuania is bound to reach the top 5. 7.75/10 It occupies my 4th place. 2. Ireland (8.25) 4. LITHUANIA (7.75) 6. Spain (7.5) 7. I like The Roop and their song, and I always saw them as a certain qualifier. But I made some friends of mine outside the Eurovision bubble listen to “Discotheque” and they really didn’t like it at all, which really surprised me …

This made me wonder whether this song only appeals to those who follow Eurovision and that other people don’t really love the song as much as us fans do.

This is so overrated. Silly moves and a song without meaning. It’s just tacky and will definitely get support from diaspora and fans from the hype of the 2020 entry which was superior.

Lithuania is not going to hit the top 5 but a top 10 is more than likely.

I’ll try to guess the remaining scores by Wiwi Jury:

  • Bulgaria – 7.12
  • France – 8.27
  • Iceland – 7.75
  • Malta – 8.45
  • Moldova – 6.77
  • Romania – 6.88
  • Switzerland – 7.95

I might be very off on this one, but I tried. 🙂

Conceptually, this is very strong. Totally in sync with the zeitgeist, the choreography has viral potential, the aesthetics are remarkable and the performers are super charismatic. Musically, I can see why it’s divisive, but I personally love how The Roop builds this track around distinctive hooks, riffs and sounds (that bridge is just awesome). I just fear how the jury will take its playful nature (the dance moves can be too much for them) and the fact Vaidotas doesn’t project much his voice. 9/10

I’m not expecting big differences between us from now on. I guess 3 of them will be a little higher for me and other 3 higher for you. The final one is a toss-up

I’m not expecting big differences either, but I can see our ratings differing by 1 or 2 points or so. I like all the remaining songs. Among them, there is my winner, my 3rd place, and my 4th place. There is also a song I bet I’ll rate lower than most people will, even if it will have a good rating.

I started out really digging ‘Discoteque’ (the autocorrect on my phone keeps trying to change it to ‘Dickoteque’…ugh!) and played it a lot. I still like it but….I think other songs have managed to catch my attention more than this one. It’s a solid comeback for The Roop though. They managed to do what a lot of the other returnees didn’t manage to do, and that is to create another catchy and equally as memorable song that the euro-public have reacted to in the same manner of their offering from 2020. Imagine having the pressure of knowing that you’re returning… Read more »

I agree that timing isn’t on their side (especially in Iceland’s case, because their popularity was peaking in the perfect moment for a contender). But I wonder if our bubble isn’t underestimating the fact that many viewers will only meet their charm for the first time weeks from now. Even those who happened to watch “On Fire” and “Thinking About Thinks” last year probably haven’t done it as many times as we did. On one hand, we developed more affection for the bands. On the other, we have difficulties to judge their 2021’s efforts without comparing to 2020’s. The general… Read more »

Well yes, it’s a really unpopular opinion (that will be obvious in the number of dislikes) but I don’t really like ”Diskoteque”. It is catchy, this makes you dance (exactly what they want), but for me there’s nothing special about it. The tone when Vaidotas sings the chorus is also annoying me a lot. I overall prefer ”On Fire” much more, even though I didn’t like it that much either (even though I admire it much more now). I know that I will probably reach a record of dislikes, but that’s my opinion. Hate is as much you want, I am not obliged to love a song which is liked by a big number of people. Good luck anyways and they deserve to break the 2006 record, when the song got ranked much higher than deserved.

If they reach the top 5 it wil totally be a fair result for Lithuania. I wouldn’t even mind to see Eurovision 2022 in Villnious

My vote would be an 8.
I agree with the 7.89 of the wiwi jury, but I can´t understand why there’s a 3 and a 4.5 in the puntuations.

I don’t wanna fall into comparisons with “On fire”, but “Discoteque” seems a bit monotonous for me. However, their performance is amazing and I think this will get to my top10 during the contest.

I love The Roop more than this song.

As a person who loves to dance alone in their spare time, I really relate to this song. “Discoteque” was always going to suffer from the comparisons to “On Fire”, but The Roop did everything in their power to give their new entry an identity of its own while sticking to the trusty blueprint. According to Vaidotas, “Discoteque” talks about “personal inner liberation”. And I can see that… sort of. Dancing solo may definitely be liberating, as it allows us to express ourselves freely, without the fear of rejection. It’s also something very natural, innate and instinctive (hence the ritualistic,… Read more »

Actually, what ratings mean to each juror is very individual. For me, anything under a 4 means a big dislike, but with some redeeming factors. Everything over an 8 means that I want to keep the song on my playlist. To give a song a zero, for me it would mean that it has no redeeming qualities whatsoever. Lyrically, musically or vocally. Or that it is so mean-spirited in its core, like a certain song which almost went on competing this year.

Wow, that’s exactly my system too, Colin! 😀 I start with 1, which is for songs I can’t stand; a 3 is a “meh, but I don’t hate it”, a 5 is an ok song, an 8 is something I’d put on my playlist, a 10 is reserved for songs I want to win the contest.

Well, considering 5 as the middle mark, I see a score of 4 as something “meh”, that doesn’t deserve to be hated but isn’t THAT interesting either

Colin

Yeah, 4 is just a ”meh”. I wouldn’t call 4 *bad* at all. I meant under a 4, meaning 3.5 or lower. Under a 3, meaning 2.5 or lower, is very bad. Under a 2, meaning 1.5 or lower would be a ”special level of bad”. A 0 is extremely rare and would indicate a totally abysmal entry, with no redeeming factors, except for maybe being in awe of how bad it is. 🙂

I appreciate that the Roop bring a eccentric flavor to the stage. The message is great , the beginning is good. However the song loses me in the middle. The chorus isn’t catchy/hooky enough and the dance moves are not very inviting for me personally. That said , this will attract a lot of televotes and should contend to be Lithuania’s best place in the contest.

This is pretty much a visual song i think. Listening to the audio alone isnt enough to make this song sky high on the scoreboard but once they are out on the stage they bring it to life . Im not sure how the juries will feel about it but i can see it getting high scores in the televote. Its going to qualify no doubt and i think could finish in around 8th or 9th place on the night.

Tobias(ed), you arrogant person. If you do not like the songs, why are u Eurofan? What happened? Last year, you were giving respectable and fair scores. This year, I have the feeling you randomly pick a number and rate a song like this. Your ratings are like: 37 countries 5 or lower (mostly 3s) 1 country randomly given a 7 and YOUR homecountry Sweden gets a 9??? Wow, you are so childish. Go watch Melodifestivalen if those repetitive songs are your taste. So angry right now.

28. Lithuania – The Roop – Discotheque – 5.5/10 – I find that I have to be in a very specific party mood to enjoy this song and maybe I will be on the night of the contest. However, as 95% of the time I am not in that Saturday night party mood, this song can not score so highly. When I am in the mood, I love it, when I am invariably not in that mood, I actually find its quirks quite irritating. The song is funky and madcap, but can also be repetitious and annoying.

Am I the only one who thinks it’s too repetitive and linear?
I like it until the first chorus, then it’s the same thing over and over again and I completely lose my interest in it, no key change, no high note, the tempo is the same all the way through, it just doesn’t go anywhere else, it literally becames a bathroom break once you realize you’ve already listened to the entirety of the song in the first 60 to 90 seconds

The song is decent even though it gets slightly repetitive as it progresses. I don’t like their live performances, they’re just ridiculing themselves to grab the viewer’s attention. Not sure about televote but this won’t be in the jury top 10.
